A Place for Mom has scored Charter Senior Living with 8.4 out of 10 using our proprietary review score based on 547 reviews in the last 2 years. Over all time, Charter Senior Living has 2,062 reviews with an average "overall experience" of 4.2 out of 5.
In my case, I had to make a decision really really quickly and I didn't have a lot of time but they really went out of their way to accomodate me. Once I went to the place it was much more and I winded up paying much more. Their intial response was very pleasant and they made little small gestures and I appreciated that but otherwise they had a lot of extras that I didn't know about that kept driving the price up, but I would say that on the whole they worked hard to accomodate us and I appreciated that. We haven't gotten to the point where I want to be they do try, the people appear to be nice and gentle, and that's what you need, gentle. The day of the move, she didn't act like she wanted to come, so the person who's the director, Michael, he called and said I'll treat her to a hair salon appointment and she let me get her ready and get over there. The key so far is it is more civilized.

The facility was beautiful and very clean. The staff was friendly. And the food looked and smelled amazing. My dad was only there for 15 days. The Executive Director was amazing! My dad was a eloper and had some behavior issues. When we were touring and also when we were there to sign his lease and arrange for his stay we told them he would be that way. They assured us this was common Alz/Dementia behavior and they dealt with it all the time and not to worry. However, once there apparently he was indeed too much for them. We were being called constantly and in that amount of time he was sent to the ER 2 or 3 times due to falls. Each time we called about it we would speak to a different person and get a different story about what happened and what exactly his injuries were. On the 15th day we were told he needed to be sent to a Psych Care place in Memphis to have his "medicines adjusted" and he most likely would not be welcomed back upon discharge from there.

Overall the place is very clean. My husband's bathroom doesn't get mopped as often as it should. He urinates on the floor a lot. The food is very good. The staff, for the most part, are very nice and respectful to us. There are a few who need more training on how to approach and handle the residents. My husband isn't being checked on through the night like he's supposed to not is he getting the number of showers he's supposed to get. I have been doing some, and that's ok. I believe they are short staffed, especially on weekends. The apartment is adequate for him. He has a studio. It's like a lot of places, staff numbers are inadequate and that is hard to rectify in this business. It takes special people to do that job.

The place was very clean and showed really well. The apartment was a good size and in very good condition. But it does seem that the actual nursing care and assistance was over stated. There is very little staffing during the evening and overnight hours. The communication was lacking. My father was sent to the hospital and we were not notified. We only found out because the hospital calles my sister as his emergency contact. Also there seems to be alot of turn over in the administrative staff which makes it difficult to know who to contact.

They were able to get us in quickly and it was relatively clean. Some staff were nice others were not. Specifically a nurse named [name removed] was very very rude. Some employees you could tell cared about my mom and took pride in their work. I think they could have had more staff on hand, there were times my mom sat in dirty diapers too long and got a rash. I liked the updates on the app. I didn't like that clothes and belongings got mixed up/lost even if there were names written on them. I think the activities were coordinated well. The room was a good size.

I rated most areas a 3 because my overall experience has been average, with both positives and areas for improvement. At times, the resident room does not appear as clean as expected. Communication between administrative staff and those providing day-to-day care seems to be an area that could be strengthened, as information does not always feel fully aligned. The food is generally okay, though it often seems heavier in carbohydrates and starches, with fewer green vegetables than expected for a balanced diet. Staff members are generally friendly, but on occasion I’ve felt hesitant to ask questions out of concern about interrupting their workflow. The activities offered in memory care, from what I’ve observed, may benefit from being more engaging or stimulating for residents. In terms of value, the monthly cost of $4,500 appears comparable to other memory care facilities in Georgia, which is why I rated it as average

My dad was only at charter for almost four days-he was moved from the hospital and during the move something happened and he was in more of a non-responsive state. We came from a facility that was terrible so having my dad die in a place where the staff was very knowledgeable, compassionate and trustworthy was a blessing. The night nurse [removed name]was especially kind and helpful. [removed name], the wellness coordinator was easy to get a hold of and very supportive. Some things we noticed while we were there, was that they were very short staffed. One night there was just one aide. Luckily my dad didn't need much at this point and we had hospice also. On the negative side after my dad , I tried calling every day for two weeks to find out what funds would be returned since we only stayed a total of four days and it was impossible to get a hold of anyone. They were always in a meeting. They tried to call me back once, but didn't leave a direct callback number. Finally, I emailed her. We expected the [removed rate] initiation fee would be gone and probably charged for a week. The total we paid was about [removed rate] and we got [removed rate] back which I think is ridiculous since he was there such a short time and needed minimal support from their staff. The facility is super clean, inviting and updated. After my dad died, they did recognize him in the veterans program and [removed name] -one of the directors -came to the funeral home, which was nice.

The staff in general seem a bit distant. I wasn't able to establish a relationship. I did not witness a strong relationship of the staff to my family members residing there. There was one nurse who seemed proactive but she was disappointed with the lack of upward mobility and possibly wanting to look for new opportunities. The PT person seemed very proactive and genuinely engaged with residents and family. After some initial upheaval and doubts about the trustworthiness of the staff, my family residents seem to be happy there, but I have limited contact with them. I do wish I could find a way to get staff to assist me with communication. I have had limited visits to the facility so I provide this assessment with hesitation.

It is my Aunt in Charter Senior Living. The facility is nice but there seems to be much turnover there which is concerning. My Aunt is comfortable as much as one can be not living at home. I have relatives in Hopkinsville who regularly visit and oversee her care since I am in Louisville.
Memory Care is an excellent option for those needing daily supervision. Unfortunately, for dementia patients, staff must be highly specialized professionals. Additionally, the oversight in the Memory Care unit would greatly benefit from the infusion of technology to improve accountability and supervision.

There was a core group of about four staff members who were wonderful for Mom and loved her. They were very, very upset when she passed away in July. The director of the facility was absolutely no help with anything. And if they felt like the staff was getting too close to a family, they would either move them to another floor or fire them. I don't get it. Several of the best workers they had got let go because they targeted them until they ran them off. At one point the air conditioning went out and it was out for over 8 weeks this past summer when it was so hot. The director bought box fans for the offices but none of the residence rooms. The director bought portable air conditioners and put them in the offices. At one point I found mom sitting out in the Commons area Overheated And very sluggish. I don't know if they have the air conditioning fixed as of this point or not. In the winter last winter the heat went out for a while. So it was very frustrating. I finally went to the director and said I'm going to go out and get one of these fans from the building and put it in my mother's room. She said which one are you going to get? I said you tell me. After that is when a portable air conditioning unit showed up in my mother's room. I don't like the way they treat staff who are doing a good job. They brought in a lady who is a nurse over the staff and she spoke the staff and to the families of the residence in a very non-respectful way. We were to the point we were going to try to find Mama another place but she started transitioning with her dementia and we just decided to stay there. The only reason she got as good of care as she did there was because my sister and I were there everyday. We took turns and went on the opposite days. So the facility and staff knew we were going to be there.

As with any place, there are great team members and some mediocre. We have been fortunate to experience decent care. There have been many staff changes throughout the year. The current leadership team has only been in place a short time, so I'm anticipating improved services and more stability with staff. Team members are very friendly. The Assisted Living section is very lively. I would like to see a similar activity level in memory care. With a little more structure and additional staff this will be possible. Food/dining - there is good variety/Meals are on a consistent schedule.. Overall, Charter has been a good place for my Mom.
