Don't judge a book by its cover

My church and I have been going into local nursing homes and assisted living facilities to sing Christmas carols and offer some holiday cheer to the patients that love there. I wasn't familiar with Poquoson, and when we pulled up I noticed how small it was compared to the other places we had been. This facility is true to the saying to not judge a book by its cover! When we entered the building we were greeted with smiles, staff immediately welcomed us and offered us hot chocolate and delicious brownies, one of the ladies working told me it was their "signature brownie" but boy let me tell you it was delicious! We watched as the staff helped the patients into the common area and then they also brought over their patients that loved on the memory care side. I was surprised. The other facilities we have gone to that had memory care either had us sing separately or we didn't go to that side at all. The interaction between the staff and patients warmed my heart, there were so many hugs and smiles, it felt like I was home singing to my family. It didn't feel like I was at a facility at all. A couple of the ladies working, sat In with the patients and sang along with us, holding hands with the patients. I could see that the patients and staff were a big family. It was so welcoming, we stayed and talked with the patients longer than we usually do. The patients seemed happy. Even the patients who they brought from memory care, who at first glance. It was heartbreaking as I can remember my grandma who had Alzheimers and how fast her decline was, it pulled at my heart. But again it reminded me not to judge a book by the cover. As we were socializing with the patients, the memory care patient, who pulled at my heart strings when they first wheeled her into the room, because I immediately thought of my grandma, well I watched her while we sang our Christmas carols, and she was singing along with us. (It shocked me because I remember my grandma at that stage of the disease and she was like an empty shell at the end) so I was thrilled to watch this frail looking woman, smile and sing along. Back to the socializing, so when I made my way to the frail woman I held her hand and wished her a Merry Christmas. She looked up at me and smiled. I just for a bit holding her hand, missing my grandma's smile. As we were leaving a staff member thanked us for coming, and invited us back. I had to ask her about the woman who pulled at my heart, I told her that i saw her singing with us, but when i spoke to her she didnt say a word, only Iooked up and smiled. I knew she wouldn't be able to tell me anything about her, but instead of brushing me off like most busy Healthcare workers do, she smiled and gave me a hug! She then went on to explain, that sometimes with Alzheimers and other similar diseases, that there comes a time when a person can lose their ability to speak. It could be from various reasons but one of them is that sometimes a person's brain will forget how to form words or what things are called. I must have looked puzzled because come on, I just saw her singing, but the staff member went on to explain how important music is and how it is considered a therapy. The popular Christmas carols we were singing, are stored in a different part of the brain, and most of the time not only will the patient remember and sing along, but it also brings with it the good feelings associated with the song. I was blown away, that the staff took time to explain things to me. So many things about my grandma sorta clicked in my head. Not once did she tell me any information about the woman I had asked about, but taking the time to answer my question and show support and kindness to me, and I was just a stranger to them at the facility. Well it really blew me away. I wish I would have known this small little facility was here when we were looking for my grandma. I can only imagine the difference it would have made to her and all of the grandchildren if someone would have explained it to us, the way this kind staff member did. Again this is a small place and it didn't appear to have all the fancy bells and whistles like the other places. But I can say this, none of the other places welcomed us the way this one did. It was clean and decorated beautifully, I didn't notice any smells or anything to raise a concern, but the home like feeling stood out, and the interactions I saw and my interaction with the staff, was everything I would have wanted. It definitely has a hometown southern charm you would expect in a small city like Poquoson. I will definitely be back to visit and just from this visit I would highly recommend, and if my grandma was still with us, I would have loved for her to be here and to feel at home and loved. From my personal experience with my grandma and our families search for a facility for her, bells and whistles are just that, bells and whistles. Who really cares how fancy it looks, it should be much more important how much love they will receive and there is no doubt in my mind the staff here love their patients!

Feels like a cruise ship!!

Things are going great for my aunt since the move to this place, she's adjusting well. [Removed], the lady that took us on the tour before, was great I loved her she made it very easy and took the time to go around with us on my aunt's first day. She knew all of the staff's names and introduced my aunt to a few residents so she would know someone and not feel alone. The place is very nice clean, my aunt went in thinking it would be a nursing home but it's more like a cruise ship. The meals are great, I ate with her a few times and its great food, and they don't limit them, they can order what they want. The building is brand new and nice looking. We are very happy.

Happy residents!

We did not get to go on a official tour, but I was able to see what needed to be seen. The residents that were there talked to us and were happy that they were here. The community itself looked clean and open. It seems like a good place.

There is no other place for my Mom. Our visit was WONDERFUL! We are looking forward to moving her into the Landings. [Removed] and the staff were so outgoing. When we entered, it was almost dinner time. The residents were forming in the lounge area waiting to be seated in the dining room, which says to me that the food is delicious. Everyone looks like they are cared for to the highest degree. [Removed] was thorough yet honest. All of our questions were answered. Information was shared without us asking. I can't see my Mom anywhere else. The Landings is for us!

Starting Out Good

I liked the size of the community and felt it has more of a homey feeling than the other larger facilities and easier to maneuver through. All the staff are very nice and pleasant with me and dad. He was cooking for himself and likes that someone else is making his meals. He says it is good and had to get accustomed to the large meals for lunch. They do a nice job keeping the community and rooms clean. My dad participates in some of the many activities they offer. It's been 2 month and in the beginning he had minor complaints but he is happy and wanted to move in.

Great choice!!

My father has been in this community for about a month and a half now and he is very happy! He likes being independent, that was the biggest issue for him was being able to come and go when he wants. Also, he can put his tv as loud as he wants. The building is an older structure. If he complains about anything, they fix it or communicate it to me right away. For example, I bought him some sheets and he didn't like them, so the housekeeper lets me know so I could exchange them. The meals are provided. They have sign ups for if he wants to go out, they take him.

Heartfields At Bowie

The staff at Heartfields made our family feel at home from the first day my parents moved in to the community. The staff is caring, kind and knowledgeable regarding the resident needs. As my parents daughter, whenever I bring up a need or things my parents need, it is addressed immediately! The nursing and care staff keeps me informed of any changes, big or small, in my Mom's condition.

Thank you for having us!

A group from our church came into volunteer at Dominion Village today, the staff greeted us and introduced us to the ladies that were sitting in the living room. We decorated the Christmas tree and had a great time talking and decorating with the residents and the staff. Looking forward to going back. Great group of people. We picked Dominion Village to volunteer at because a lot of our church members are residents there and a few of the women in our church group have had loved ones there. Its a great a place. Small and home like and fits perfectly with our little town of Poquoson
