Storypoint is by far one of the most beautiful Senior Living Facilities. However, the company over promises and under delivers. Coming from a family of medical professionals there are great concerns when you have a loved one as a resident. Whether you are in independent living, enhanced living or other areas of the facility your loved ones will face issues that are not acceptable. Storypoint needs to increase training in all areas of all disciplines all the way up to the Executive Director. Safety and Quality should NOT be compromised! Please take notice and start listening to your residents and act on their concerns timely.

Much Room for Improvement; Concerned

Thank you for this opportunity to give feedback. Having a loved one in a memory care facility is very tough in many ways and I realize that no one will care for them with as much love as I have for them. That being said there is definitely room for much improvement. I have discussed the following areas with other family members of residents. 1. Care and attitude toward residents is cold, mechanical, rushed and forceful at times. This seems to be evident from the memory care leader/ manager on down to the care takers. My mother has had bruises and broken skin on her hands where they have obviously been too forceful. Mother is not combative, she has a generally happy, peaceful disposition albeit stubborn and confused at times. 2. Staff is very loud with their personal conversations during resident dining periods. Very loud and sometimes yelling at residents from across the room. 3. Daily activities are minimal. Common go to is to place everyone in chairs or on the couch in the "tv room". The help is then sitting in chairs off in the corners playing on their cell phones. Bingo or trivia is offered pretty regularly but the residents are not encouraged to participate. It is a very dry activity. Trivia does not strike me as the best game to play with memory care patients. 4. The red alert button found in the bathrooms is not responded to. Staff tells me that they usually don't carry the pager. 5. Staff does not wear name tags or uniforms. 6. Some care takers will not even speak to me when I greet them. Family members of the residents are often the voice for the residents. The staff is "caring" for our loved ones and the communication / friendliness / courtesy we as family members encounter makes me question the quality of care our family member is receiving. Again, thanks for providing a place to be heard. We have to strive for better and be the voice for those who cannot speak.

Family Concerns

Lots of growing pains that should be worked out by now. Many issues that are overlapping and need to be sorted out. Bottom line is the rent is not cheap, and these things need to be addressed ASAP. Mainly caregiver burnout and apathy causing WAY too much time to go by before answering emergency calls. Families need to feel their concerns are being heard and they don't currently feel that way.

Beauty isn't everything

My mother resided here for 8 days. She suffered from cancer and was unable to live alone in her home. We were assured by StoryPoint that her care would be accelerated as needed. This didn't happen. Her care on the day she passed away was exactly the same as the day she arrived, despite our pleadings for more care. Be sure to get the level of care needed for your loved one. The surroundings are beautiful, but don't let it fool you. They are severely understaffed - Only one nurse and 3 aids during the night - and not much more during the day. We paid $6800 for 8 days of substandard care. The staff tried, but there just weren't enough of them.

I have been touring multiple Assisted and Independent living facilities in the Aurora area for my family. I felt the sales representative was very unorganized in his sales theory to me on the facility. The caregivers also did not seem engaged with the patients as I toured. I would NOT recommend this facility, especially for the price of the apartments.

3 week stay

Safekeeping unit: Employees were very friendly and [Removed] said the food was really good. The issue comes down to being really short staffed. Friday her clothes looked dirty then on Sunday her sister said she was wearing the same dirty clothes. I’m not sure if her hair had been washed during the 3 weeks she was there. She doesn’t use a wheelchair at home but did while she was there. (Fall risk) The therapist said she would only use it when she was alone. Now that she’s back Home she has more trouble walking than before. I don’t believe she walked around much during her stay.

Management oversells services provided, food is mediocre

Be forewarned. when leasing you an apartment, management tells you they have a bus to take you around town. They terribly and wrongfully over sell this service. They don't go just anywhere you need to get. M,W, F are trips to stores from 9:30AM-12PM. T, TH - are trips to doctors. Good luck trying to get somewhere else at some other time. Like if your doc is only in town on Wednesday?? They don't even travel to The Senior Center... So be forewarned. Get this oversold service very clear before renting here.. Oh and the City's Senior Wheels service doesn't pick up at senior living apartments (that's [Removed]) so you might find yourself stranded.

Housekeeping is Sadly Lacking

My mom has lived at Danbury Senior Living (Independent building) for many years. In the past several years "housekeeping" has really fallen off, to the point where I have to clean her apartment several times a month. We were told this is included in the (high) rent. I have taken the dirty paper towels to the front desk and asked them to speak to "housekeeping" or to management, but nothing has been done. My mother tells me others complain to each other, but fear repercussions if they complain to management. I will once again be cleaning this weekend since Danbury is apparently not up to the task. It's a nice enough place for her to live, quiet, and common areas appear to be clean, but "housekeeping" is sadly lacking in the apartments.

Choose Wisely

My father resided at Independence Village from approximately September 2015-Aril 2017. Originally he lived in independence living but was later moved to assisted living (same building different area). I would say the staff is on par with other facility but the facility does offer many activities and services. In hindsight though if your love one has Alzheimer this is not the facility I would choose. As the disease progressed the staff and the facility are not trained or equipped to deal with declining cognitive abilities. We were told in the end that we either had to come get him and take him home or have someone come stay with him due to the difficulties of caring from him (we even signed up for "Home Care Services") a third party service that provides additional help. Since this community does not offer a memory care unit I would advise looking elsewhere. It's not that we didn't know the disease was progressive but we were shocked that no warning was giving that we should look into moving him. We certainly knew the calls for various issues were increasing but nobody sounded the alarms and we got the ultimatum call right out of blue. GET HIM OUT! This led to a mad scramble to find him a memory care unit which was quite daunting. In the end we did find a new great facility but it was a difficult time. And yes we visited him at least twice a week so we were very hands-on."

We tried out The Hearth at Prestwick for a respite stay for my mom. If things had of went well we would have had my mom come to live here. We felt that the facility was understaffed and she would not get the care we wanted her to have. It was not a good fit.

This property is off our list. It needs some updates badly. While we were on our tour, we heard three residents voice complaints to the General Manager about various things. Also, there is no one on duty from 7:30 pm to 7:30 am. This is a serious concern for us. The community fee is extremely high compared to others, yet the amenities do not seem to justify that. Also, the General Manager could not give us firm pricing, saying it can change day to day.

Parkside Court not what it was in 2015

Toured and selected Parkside Court in May 2015. Made the decision based on quality of caring staff, on site resident managers available 24 x 7. Fast forward to 2017. No longer have on site resident managers, replaced them with a life alert system. No on site security personnel. And they raised the rent for less service. Food has deteriorated with new small portions. My dad has lost over 10 lbs and unacceptable to his doctor. Parkside Court was a top facility at time of selection in 2015. Now ownership is managing the bottom line and sacrificing the care for my dad. I would not select this facility based on change in the offer.

This place is terrible. They make it look nice on the first floor but that is where it stops. My grandfather is in the memory care unit and if it had been my choice there is no way he would be there. The residents are left alone quite a bit, they do not do things to stimulate them at all, they do the bare minimum if that and the place is filthy. They only supposedly clean the rooms once a week and especially with dimentia patients this is not enough. My grandpa's bathroom is always disgusting with feces and urine everywhere, floors are gross. For the money you pay this place it should be spotless daily. Absolutely unacceptable and it pains me that he is in there. The only good thing I can say is that most of the staff is friendly but they truely do the bare minimum and most you can tell are not very knowledgeable. But hey I guess at least they are nice. Do not put your family member here. I have worked in health care for over 20 years and this place disgusts me.

I decided that this was not the place for me. I just didn't get the best kind of feeling about what I needed from the community. I saw only one person that lived there and that was all. The person I met with didn't seem as friendly and welcoming on the tour. She just showed me a room, the floors, and the dining room. No activities were going on just an empty building. I only liked the balcony. To improve have someone who is more friendly and outgoing and when an activity is happening.

Experience

Beautiful facility, High staff turnover. Management seem unattached and unapproachable. Recommended by a close friend who loved the executive Director and stated she was very involved. My friend parent has since moved out. Executive Director no longer there.

When I had my tour it didn't feel right. I didn't like the set up, it was too large. I couldn't see my mother getting around there easily, she is mobile. It had more than one level and the area where they ate I didn't like. I had to wait awhile for the gal to show me around. I observed the workers and didn't see a good friendly atmosphere. If the staff spoke with a friendly tone or greet me it would have been better, they just didn't seem to care about their job.

Memory care at Danbury - be warned.

My father was in memory care for 4.5 months until he passed away. Here are the reasons I rated Danbury at 2 stars: 1. My father FELL SEVEN TIMES despite being identified as a falls risk. 2. We were told an aide would check on him every hour. THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN. We were there frequently, and we would go 3-4 hours without any staff checking in. Even after pushing the “HELP” button, it would take up to 30 minutes for a response. We once waited 20 minutes, walked to the nurses’s station and found all of the staff watching TV. 3. We found him frequently sitting in soaked Depends - sometimes soaking through his clothing and into the bed or char. 4. Not enough controls on medication dispensing - health care professionals with access to his opioids could easily steal them without detection. 5. HE WAS NEVER SEEN BY THE PHYSICIAN IN CHARGE. 6. Administrative staff - you could never find a senior manager on weekends or after business hours. 7. Memory care unit was managed by an LPN not an RN. Her follow up on requests was terrible. 8. Missing items - we have a list of at least 10 items that "disappeared." 9. We were told Dad's laundry would be separate from others, per policy. Sheets, clothes, towels and washcloths went missing. Several items not belonging to him showed up in his laundered items. 10. Housekeeping is atrocious. WE WERE GOING TO MOVE HIM SOMEWHERE ELSE, BUT HE FELL AND HIT HIS HEAD, WHILE A STAFF MEMBER WAS IN HIS ROOM. HE WAS NEVER EVALUATED BY A PA OR MD AFTER THE FALL. 24 HOURS LATER, HE WENT INTO A COMA AND DIED 5 DAYS LATER.

Need more thorough evaluations

Our experience with The Hearth at Sycamore Village was not a good one, unfortunately. It was a nice enough looking place, but the level of care was just not what my loved one needed. When they did their evaluation of his needs they said it would be fine, but this did not end up being the case. If you have any doubts about the level of care matching I would definitely double check that this facility is appropriate for your loved one.

Disappointed

Mother trusted daughter to "do the right thing" for her as she was moving from a distant location. Friendliness was outstanding prior to move-in. After move-in mother felt "invisible" to upper management. No orientation provided. Food not good: tough, dry, tasteless. Cleanliness/sanitization of apartment was not completed: black mold at faucets, drains, and handicap bars. Other surfaces tacky, sticky. ALL flooring not replaced as promised. Other obvious damages in apartment not fixed prior to move-in. Common areas need deep cleaning: dusting, vacuuming and railings sanitized. Laundry room dirty. Towels provided on one occasion were folded but dirty/bloody. We are VERY disappointed with this property.
