I would tell others just to make sure you ask questions.

Nurse and staff were very helpful and they were attentive to my wife.

Families need to know that they need to have back up options for their loved ones in case their loved ones need one on one care. Valparaiso Senior Village doesn't have the staff for that. If you're loved one gets aggressive the loved one gets sent to another facility that has bad care and your loved one comes back in worse condition and stands a good chance to get kicked out of Valparaiso Senior Village. Make sure your loved ones have names on everything. I would even take pictures so you can prove it belongs to your loved one. The staff that takes care of the residents is awesome. But these other things l mentioned are red flags! Be cautious!

The facility is fine .. and kept fresh .. LPN nursing staff is stretched to their limit . LPNs are unable to supervise and direct training , as they struggle to find the time for hands on training of inexperienced aides patient .. See one , Do one with young new hires is inadequate... it appears that peer shadowing is the primary training method. Senior aides would provide enrichment which is surely lacking.. my Dad has been a level 4 resident for 1 year, and he has seen the quality of care diminish.. Unfortunately he's become negative with staff, who claim" I'll be back " and don't return. The Button is turned off and that satisfies whatever SUPERVISION there is ..Entertaining residents is fine, but when they are in sufficiently cared for the program misses its goal ..follow through is inadequate .

not helpful enough some staff care others just want a pay check

The management is terrible. The food has gone completely down hill. The apartment sizes are ok, not sure about the activities.

I was impressed with [name removed] and [name removed] at Grace Haven. I was disappointed with some of the staff in the Memory Care. They were on their phones and there was no interaction during free time with patients. Memory care was understaffed the week my mother-in-law passed. When my daughter and I went into Mom's apartment to pack it up, the tubes and aftermath from her death were laying in a pile by her bed and was piled in bathroom. It was very difficult to see that. I believe it should have been removed and not left for family to see.

Food, maintenance of facility, activities, choice of providers in the facility providing assistance and support could all be improved on. With those improvements, we would recommend the community to others.

I moved my dad into this facility in March. It is a nice facility with friendly staff. My only concern is the head nurse does not get back with you until WEEKS later or, if at all. I've had to keep calling or texting to no avail. It becomes frustrating when you are trying to get a hold of someone and they don't respond back or answer their phone.

Administrators are friendly, but hard to get to talk to. Mom is now in assisted living. Caregivers are helpful, but in a hurry. Independent living, be aware of all the extra fees, (through Laurus). If filling out menus for food eating in your room, be aware you don't know what you will be eating. Don't get things you order. Forget coffee, creamer, syrup, brown sugar, butter and even silverware. Be patient if eating in bistro. The aides are caring people but there is a disconnect somewhere.

Independence Village - Des Moines, Management is poor. We will stay here, at least for the foreseeable future; however, the reality is much different than what the brochure says & what mgmt. does.

My father doesn't do anything they offer, but I think they have nice options available. The issues I have are with communication. I live about 45 minutes away and used to be very hands-on with my father's medical care. I started using their in-house medical staff and have been left out of the loop a lot! I am also juggling taking care of my mom on hospice in my home. Some of the issues are with the medical company, but some are with the staff at Danbury. They take several days to return calls, usually. And, I feel like they have just told me what I wanted to hear to keep me happy. Even though my father is the resident, I'm actually the customer because I'm the one paying the bill. Overall, I think it's a nice place, but if someone is looking for a place for their LO and not able to be there at least weekly to check on them, maybe keep looking. I should note that my dad has dementia, with paranoia and aggression, and is more difficult than most, I think. If he was independent without those issues, he'd be fine.

Got four different figures to enter the facility and when we left, we had a final billing, which also changed when I went to pay it. Was told veterans get a discount, but we never received it. Always had a hard time getting any status. Either shift change or meetings were always being done at the time of questioning status. Every visit required cleanup time.

When in the building and visiting my mom, the staff is very attentive and proactive when answering my questions and in addressing issues. However, when I try to reach them remotely, they do not respond to me at all. Furthermore, I have a Alexa device in my mother's room so that I can communicate with her face-to-face when I am out of town. On a daily basis, the midnight staff unplugs this device when they are getting her ready in the morning. I have asked several times for them to leave it alone, but the midnight staff operates by their own rules and they do not communicate very well with the day staff. This is an ongoing problem.

On move in day they gave us the keys and told us our apartment number. Had to ask for people to make her feel welcome. Should have been a welcoming committee and there wasn’t. Literally nothing. Disappointing. She fell last night late in the late evening, around midnight. Hospital called and said nobody at Story Point could provide any information on her when ambulance came to get her. They knew nothing about her. All staff, including 3rd shift, should have a manager that can access DOB, medications, etc. Should be able to provide basic information to EMS. Nobody from management followed up after she returned from the hospital to speak with us or ask how she was doing. On several occasions she has gotten clean laundry that isn’t hers. Seems to be an ongoing issue.

The apartment 's are lovely but need better food options. Schedule more activities and have receptionist on always. Lower pricing. No one here staff wise on weekends. They could have better communication with new arrivals.

Our family member moved from the Kalamazoo Story Point to the Portage Story Point, and we found the management and quality of care far superior at the Portage location.

It is best for price. I would recommend if money was an issue. Management staff is relative new. Good interaction so far. Rest of staff is wonderful and very helpful.

Very expensive, but I know they all are. Didn't have a good experience with care on memory unit. First day, said if father wanted to walk around, they would get him up and walk around with him. Spent the rest of the time trying to drug him up so much that he didn't have a desire to get up. They failed. Also, poor coordination between their nurse and hospice. Their nurse didn't listen to our requests or consider his medical/ medicine history. Tough situation for all. He caught the flu or something and died within a month. Lost the will to live, I think. Also billed us for a doctor he never saw.

They could improve by having someone here, in charge, 24 hours a day. People get locked out, ambulance drivers cannot get into patient room and no help to assist residents with any problems. They said it was run as a hotel.
