I did not have a very good first impression of this community. When I first walked into the building the lighting was very dim and there was little to no natural light throughout the lobby and dinning room. I also noticed that the bedrooms seemed to be tiny as well as very little windows allowing again no natural light into the apartment. It just seemed like a very depressing atmosphere that I really would not want my mother to live in. The staff was friendly and they did have a beautiful courtyard on the positive side.

All the glitter, but no gold

We presently live here. Be advised there are better places. The care staff is great, but management is not honest. They toot their Montesorri prograam for alzheimer's, but it is mostly TV. They are required by law to provide three activities a day. They consider giving a cookie to a resident an activity. I spend a lot of time in there with my wife. They have admitted to not providing the services required by law and contracted for. But their philosophy is that is our fault. I complained about the food and they told me it was my fault because I have a refined palate. They have offered to pay for my move. So far, they haven't offered enough. Before coming here, give it a good look. Ask about turnover. Have an attorney check the papers they want you to sign. Resist signing their DRA. This is a dispute resolution agreement that works in their favor. You will be grateful for that advice. Then check out the better places. This jplace is on the third director in three years and their 6th dining manager. Food is youth camp or school cafeteria quality. Lots of show for your dough, but go slow.

Unpleasant Experience!!

I have been having so many issues with my room. The carpet is dirty, my bathroom is broken, and the sink as well. There is an assisted living next door and everyone from there seems to come over to the independent living side and have their meals here. Unfortunately there aren't many staffs around to help them out when they are eating and there is always a mess in the dinning room. I feel like i am providing a lot of care for them when they are around. They also didn't inform me that the water classes were only in the summer twice a week. I have spoken with the director regarding this matter and they have not really been doing much to address this issue.

August 10, 2016

This was our very first call and we scheduled a visit for Sat. Aug. 6th at 10 AM. Mom accompanied me, but other than the menu and location, we were not impressed. Our tour guide took us to many rooms which upon inspection she couldn't show us and the only room we viewed that wasn't occupied was recently vacated, with soiled carpets and walls. She concentrated on their new digital medication management and charting stations in the hall, which meant nothing to my Mom. The halls were narrow, no occasional seating, reminded one of a nursing home and she didn't seem to know residents or staff. Unfortunately this first visit turned my Mom off to further looking, so I (and the family) will back off till something happens to change her mind or we have to force her into a move for her and Dad's health and safety.

Brookdale Edina is a beautiful facility. My wife spent 8 days as a guest while I was fishing. I brought quite a few changes of clothes and hung them in a closet in her room. when I picked her up to go home they(clothes) were scatter all over the room and nothing was in the closet.some were under the sink soaking wet. A day or two after being home i noticed ,she was wearing someone else's eyeglasses. Two of her cat dolls she brought with her were missing. I called Julie [Removed] about the glasses and dolls about a month ago and she said she would look into the matter. Till this date no response from Ms [Removed].. I cant comment on the staff.because my wife's memory is bad and she has no recolection of what took place. The staff seemed Ok except for the nurse in charge of medications was very pushy and not friendly at all.

Not sure of the truth about this place

My mother just passed away at the gardens. She had been there for several years and I thought she was being well taken care off. I picked up her stuff on Saturday and was shocked to see how filthy her room was. She had some nice furniture and someone left me a note wanting to know if furniture was for sale. Less then 24 hours after she died I had to endure this heartless nonsense. I felt like the ladies who took care of my mother were looking to grab some of her stuff in the room. People kept coming in the room and looked around while I was packing up her stuff. My Mom told me they were stealing her stuff, which was blamed on her dementia, but perhaps they really were trying to steal her stuff. Have no illusions that this is a profit company. It seemed the money was the most important issue with them on every level. I am feeling guilty I left her here because I have no idea how they really treated her. You hear horror stories and I so hope my intuition is wrong. There were some wonderful people that worked there and my gratitude goes out to Pat at the front desk. I have a sick feeling I let me Mom down by subjecting her to this place.

No personal attention from the staff..

My loved one has poor eye sight. They put her in a room way in a corner where she was isolated. She basically just stayed in her room. She didn't get any personal attention. She tried to sit in a dark area in the dining room and a resident yelled at her to move. She needs to be in a dark area because of her eye sight. The staff did not try to help her. She also had problems getting her medication. This place may be good for some people but it wasn't for us.

Deceptive in marketing

They market themselves as "affordable"; however, they refuse to release actual costs without personal interaction with the potential resident. My understanding from three residents is that low-middle to middle income seniors cannot afford the monthly rent. They actually prefer to cater to the upper income senior.

I toured the Assisted Living in this community. The rooms were dirty and the bathroom needed to be clean. A man was walking around and seemed to be in pain, but no staff nor nurse was in sight. A man asked me where he should go and to see if there was happy hour. I did not see any activities that were happening. There was a women in the dining room who was eating, but was spilling on herself and the floor. I met the nurse, but seemed to be in a hurry and did not talk to me much. The women in the dining room was still there by herself at the end of my tour. I was very disappointed with this place. I thought that it was one of the better Brookdale communities in the state, but sadly no.

NURSE is Incompetent!

Terrible place to have your loved ones be in. It is okay for the Independent Living, but DO NOT admit your loved ones in ASSISTED LIVING. It is pricey and they will not give you answers on how or why they are charging you that much. They go by the assessment of the nurse, who herself does not know any of the residents cares. All they want is money! You will not be able to see the nurse at all. She will not give you a heads up on anything. If you call her or asks her a question, she will not give you full details because she does not know what she is talking about. The nurse has no previous experience in Assisted Living.

Not very impressed, no medicaid, $6,850 per month private, mattresses on the floor to prevent falls, pretty beat up.

Don't judge this book by its cover

On the outside it's beautiful but it's what is on the inside that matters. While most of the staff is friendly and caring, they are over-worked and we experienced 3 turnovers of employees while my mom lived there. They are not equipped to handle difficult cases of alzheimer or dementia either - due to the limited number of caregivers. It was not a great experience for my mother or us however, the facility is kept very clean but be prepared to keep replacing missing items that continously disappear (even though they were clearly labelled.) I would only recommend this facility to those whose loved one is still aware of their surroundings. I have always said you don't get to call yourself an Alzheimers/Dementia facility just because you have locks on the doors.

Not my first (or second) choice

My father was first put with a patient that we were later told never is roomed with anyone due to the severity of his condition. After a miserable and sleepless night he was moved but his confidence in the facility was rightfully shaken. The next night he waited for over an hour to have assistance to the toilet and was told that he'd just have to wait as the technician had 18 patients and pooping wasn't a priority. The stress was great on his fragile system and we went back to the hospital the next day. The nurses who had cared for him before Knightsbridge were shocked at the damage 48 hours had done. I would never suggest this place. It looks nice and the food is good. If you can care for yourself then it might be a good choice. But it us NOT a good choice for medical assistance of any kind. And the attitude that the nurses gave us when we decided to take him back to OSU was horrendous. You would think we were dipping directly into their pay! They told us to ignore his 'antics' and go home. I don't think needing help to breath or get to a toilet is antics. Those nurses need continuing education in compassion. They will grow old and require assisted too. I hope they get exactly what they've given.

Keep looking...there are better out there that cost less with better care

From the time we made the decision that Edgewood worked for my Mom the care was bad. Within the first two weeks they "accidentally" let my my out the front door. She wandered the streets for hours until finally she went to a door and the homeowner called the police. Not much later one of their caregivers [removed] my mother with her finger nails. The wounds required antibiotics and there are still deep scars. The caregiver said my Mom was trying to hit her...however the caregiver had no marks. My mom is nearly 80 and the caregiver was approximately 25. Unfortunately the same scenario happened a second time...begging the question of the training at the facility. The staff is not adequately trained to work with the trials of Alzheimer's...especially those that are still talkative and mobile. Their answer is to give the member mind dulling drugs. If you don't comply then they increase the costs by 30-40% with no explanation. They seem to do well as long as the client is wheel chair bound and can't communicate...or is drugged into submissiveness. I've had family members in 4 different facilities in the Portland & Beaverton areas and this is among the most frustrating. Many of the people there are well meaning and work well with the clients, however there is a general lack of training and therefor they are I'll-equipped to understand the complexities of Alzheimer's victims. On a positive, they do offer a solid amount of mind stimulating activities run by Lisa, who is a gem who offers some redemption.

Worst experience ever

My Dad moved in on Nov. 4, 2013, on the fourth day we were told that he fallen but it was not serious. After a visit by my brother later on that night he required medical attention by ER Dr for trauma to the inter part of his arm (not consistent with a fall). Called home office and sent picture of his arm and didn't get a response for several days. We did his laundry & cleaned his room the whole time he lived there. He was isolated at meal time. The care declined dramatically!! He basically became lifeless there. After a Dr's. visit that confirmed a 35 lb.weight loss i decided to bring him home. Upon packing his belongings i was told by four staff members(& a pvt.duty care giver) he had been [removed] several times. (covered up by staff) Unfortunately he has not been the same since he went to Elmcroft. Sadly i entrusted these people to care for him. They decided to clean house and get rid of the people that required more care basically. My question is how do these people sleep at night??
