They weren't professional. They set up an appointment with us and weren't ready for us when we got there. The rooms weren't as nice. It's wasn't as clean, it was a lot noisier than any of the others we saw. I was just generally noisy and the staff was not near as professional as they should have been.

They're trying

The upper managment people are good compassionate people. The resident nurses are a good staff. However, the middle management doesn't share the same compassion. They seem unable to cope with my father's behavior, his dementia. It has been a constant struggle to keep the room sanitary. There is a residue of urine that clings to shoes. There is also too much stealing and borrowing (which I recognize is normal for Alzheimer's patients) between patients. They need to catch this quicker. They are quick to detect medical problems and have improved the overall health of my father. That is good. Taking care of dementia afflicted patients is a huge undertaking and I admire the dedication of those compassionate staff that do it well.

I didn't liek this at all. The first thing was when I walked in the door, I could smell urine. I didn't care too much for the rooms either, they seemed a little small. When I walked in the door, to be honest, right when that smell hit me I thought "just turn around and leave." I've worked in nursing homes for a few years and the place seemed like it was older and when we were walking down the hallway someone had gone to the bathroom right in the middle of the floor.

Poor Communication

This is the first facility that I've placed my mother in. They get a zero on communication. I understand that they're going through some management changes but when you place your mother in a facility and you email and call and you don't get a response, that's devastating. You can't run over there everynight to see how your loved one is doing. She's been moved 3 times since she's been there. She's a very high functioning alzheimer's patient and now she's in a house of very low funcitoning people. She's the only one who's ambulatory. I don't think she's in the appropriate house. I've seen good care but I don't think there is enough activity for her. It's very cheery and bright - open and spread out with more space to walk around.

Memory care CANNOT help patients that have Parkinson'sDementia. Nurse aides DO NOT respect leadership and mouth off to patient loved ones. Even if you sign papers to be contacted by EMS before they tote your scared mother with delusions and paranoia to ER when she has no injuries they send her without calling. I only knew my mom was in hospital becaue they contacted me. Did not hear from Lorain Estates for 3 DAYS!! ER Dr. did not want my mom sent back there. They sent her to ER 6 times in a few days. She had no injuries luckily as they never watched her and she would forget she couldn't get up. And do not get me started on their PA who had nurses giving my mom low and high blood pressure medicine every day on and off all day

Beautiful facility, can be incredibly difficult to actually get in!

It's a beautiful, clean place with lots of things for the residence to do, I'm sure [name removed] would've LOVED it there. Unfortunately they made it so difficult for us to actually get in for our one month respite stay that I was never able to get him in. I ended up under twice as much stress as I was before when this was supposed to be a respite for me. He ended up being stuck 45 minutes away from home in a different house while we were waiting to get him in into Whitby and then when we finally got the greenlight to get them into Whitby he left the house and then we couldn't get him in again because this because that and we had to put him in a hotel for three weeks! We finally just gave up and took him home! All in all this little venture with Whitby Pointe cost me MORE stress, I got no respite, and paid THOUSANDS of dollars in hotel fees.

Balancing Care Needs with Dignity and Comfort

Care quality seemed to depend heavily on the resident's level of independence. When he was more self-sufficient, the experience felt more appropriate, but over time concerns arose about paying for a higher level of care than was actually needed. After a health setback, his needs increased, including incontinence support and assistive hearing devices, which were lost and replaced multiple times. While the activities team stood out as attentive and engaging, some caregiving staff appeared less consistent in their attentiveness and sensitivity. There were also concerns about the environment in shared spaces. In the evenings, residents were often left watching television with limited engagement, and the programming did not always feel suitable for the audience. At times, staff seemed disengaged, socializing among themselves rather than interacting with residents. Observations of how certain residents were handled during moments of distress raised additional worries about emotional support and supervision. Overall, the situation has created ongoing uncertainty and concern about whether this setting is the best fit. There is a strong desire to ensure a higher level of compassion, engagement, and individualized care, balanced with the difficulty of managing alternatives and honoring the resident's wishes for comfort and dignity.

Bad experience

ALF rooms need updating, bathrooms so small that wheelchair barely fits in. No ceiling lights in rooms on first floor making them dark and dant. Overall care needs improving; the aides were good however management was not. There are plenty of other ALFs that are comparable in price and offer far better and safer accommodations for your loved ones.

Overall experience. The aids are very nice a lot of turnover with the aids don't see a lot of activities housekeeping could be a lot better than what it is. There's several times I've come in and sweep my mom's floor my mom really doesn't like the food. The food is really bland the room size is ok. She was sharing a room until her roommate passed away. But not enough closet space but hospice 360 comes in several days a week. And it helps my mom with her baths, read scripture and check on her health i'm thankful for that. You have to use their pharmacy that they contract with. All her medications have a copay that is a [amount removed]. If you don't use their pharmacy, you have to pay some kind of fee. If she would use the pharmacy from her insurance, all her medicine would be free. That's my main issue with this facility.

Promises not kept - Do NOT recommend

The caregivers at Birchwoods at Canco were mostly very sweet and kind to my mother. When she was accepted into the community, they were very reassuring that they could handle her and her early stage dimentia, as there was a memory care indication on their website. They advertised that this included activities that would benefit their memory care community. Sometime soon after they admitted her, that was taken off the website, and all of a sudden they could not handle her (low level) Dimentia...and it became a problem. The management staff did extensive testing and evaluations prior to her admittance. They assured us that she was a good fit for the community and thought she would be an excellent addition with her fun and spunky personality. The very night that she moved in, we received two rude and panicky phone calls at around 1 AM and 3:30 AM from one of the ladies on duty telling us that Mom was scared and agitated and wanted to leave - apparently, she walked into the hallway and was looking for my father. We absolutely freaked out and I was in a panic. They clearly had absolutely NO training on how to handle something like this, and the responsibility was thrown at us to deal with it. The caregiver was annoyed and said now that she would have to put someone outside my mom's room to make sure that she didn't leave for the rest of the night. The caregiver had no skills to try to calm mom down in this situation or reassure her. My mother had never lived in an assisted living facility before he was confused and frightened. The staff had absolutely no clue that's how to deal with that which blew us away. From that very first night, we had already lost confidence and anxiety was high. Frankly, we felt very duped and disappointed... They were not honest from the get-go. Birchwoods was changing management companies when my mother was accepted to become a resident. They NEVER told us this. They had apparently let their director go and had not hired a new one. Communication was almost nonexistent, except for periodic phone calls from lower level caregivers. Things were very discombobulated, disorganized, and there was almost zero communication from any manager (other than the few times that we hounded them and demanded a callback.) It was almost as if they were trying to hide how bad things really were within their organization. We only wanted to have to move my mom once. It was a difficult transition but mom really started to like it there and she made good friends. Upon admitting mom to the community, Birchwoods said that they believed in lifelong care so that once a resident was accepted, she would not have to move out...once they were there at Birchwoods, they could stay indefinitely. This was NOT TRUE. In the end, the new management company apparently decided that they were going to start asking people to leave who they deemed required too much attention/care, which they did. This left families scrambling. We caught wind of this from other residents' families and, after only a few months, we decided to find a new place for mom to live. (In fact, a few directors from these other communities openly told us that they were getting frantic phone calls from families currently at the Birchwoods, trying to find a new place for their loved one because they were asked to leave on very short notice.) Overall, it was a horrible and unsettling experience at Birchwoods that only added to our anxiety, stress, and guilt of having to move her in the first place. I would not recommend this facility to anyone.

Eye opening experience

I had my eyes opened with this experience. It really doesn't matter what facility you pick for the most part. This is what I would recommend to someone looking for assisted living facility. If your loved one is mobile and has their cognitive abilities these places will be fine. However if you aren't mobile like my mom these places are horrible. They are just locked away in their rooms and the people that visit are in and out. In my opinion there needs to be real reform. Hitting you nurse call button and no one coming for 45 minutes is unacceptable. That happened while I was there. Also the no rails on your bed law is about the dumbest thing I've ever heard. She was so frightened of falling it drove her bonkers. The people were nice for the most part but were not very organized as a team. Should've had my mom's meds squared away from the jump but they didn't. That was an ongoing struggle until I hired a 24 hour caregiver and moved her back home best decision I ever made!

Review for Briar Glen Alzheimer's Special Care Center

There were so many shortcomings and not expectations that were not met with the care of my sister. I am being generous with giving them a 2. I highly would not recommend Briar Glen to any family after my experience.

Edina Heights Senior Living

This is a little difficult because my experience has been quite varied over the period we have been here. Initially things went reasonably well for the first 3 months. Maybe a 4. Through [dates removed] and to this point I have to drop it to a 2. There have been complications with billing and accounts which they blame the transition of new ownership for. My wife is in the memory care section which I believe needs more support staff. It is hard to answer with much confidence until the new ownership transition is complete. All I can say is I am a little worried and it would only be an opinion.

Frustrating 10k for 10 days

This was not a good experience for us. The staff wasn't very attentive to my dad. He had a stroke and my friend called me saying something wasn't right so I drove into town and I am the one that called the nurse to have 911 called. He was there for 10 days and it was awful. I asked for dads deposit back of 1000 and they said it was a community fee and was not refundable. I said he was only there for 10 days and they didn't seem to care.

Review for Park Summit

When I came back from the hospital I was treated very kindly. The staff in the wellness center were careful with me. But honestly, that ended quickly. For example I need a prescription picked up today that needs my license. Forget it. Not a chance. No understanding, no way I have to ask and pay the aide I have to do it. I wouldn't know I live in a Senior Care living facility. I'm here now until I get healthy on my own. I still don't eat in the dinning room due to the times and the food. It's just not as good as mine. I look forward to moving out and to the east side-to the ocean, to the beach, to fresh air, to vital people-that's what keeps me young. This place keeps you looking at when you are going to die. I hope you understand what I mean
