Proceed with caution...there are some good things about the place but also some bad things.

Brookdale definitely over-promised services. The best thing I can say about Brookdale Plymouth is that the staff is very friendly and smile a lot. The Activities Director is also fabulous and my mom really likes him. However, my mom doesn't understand most of the rest of the staff because of the language barrier (a lot of the staff have thick accents and I myself even have a hard time understanding what they are telling me). The thing that bothers me the most about Brookdale Plymouth is that my mom is paying $461/month extra for dressing/grooming assistance, but she rarely gets assistance. Mind you my mom tells the staff that she doesn't need assistance, but this is not the case. I was told by the Director that the staff are trained to "re-approach" when encountering resistance. I just don't see that happening at all with my mom's care. For example, I've noticed that my mom wears the same dirty clothes for days in row. Where is the "assistance" from the staff in getting her to change her clothes? I also have noticed that my mom sleeps in her clothes many nights. Again, where is the assistance from the staff in getting my mom into her pajamas? Same thing with the showers. My mom pays $173/month extra for assistance with bathing two times a week. After two months I learned that my mom had only taken 1 bath since arriving. (I have no idea why I wasn't informed of this sooner.) I learned that my mom was refusing the shower and that the staff were unable to get my mom to take one. The solution was for me to be there when it's a bath/shower night. Another very bad issue is the cleaning of the rooms (or lack there-of) There is very little cleaning done (if any) of my mom's room. I wind up cleaning and vacuuming once a week. The Director is very nice but appears to constantly give me lip service ("that shouldn't have happened"; "we are retraining/re-educating our staff", etc.). My mom's clothes and bed linens often get lost. (2 sets of sheets have disappeared). From what I understand, this is common at all memory care facilities. Brookdale promised me that I could be the "daughter" again (instead of my mom's caretaker). Unfortunately that hasn't happened. I launder my mom's clothes and bed linens, I am the one to convince my mom to take a shower, I am the one who is cleaning my mom's room, etc.. I still feel like the care-taker. Having provided mostly negative feedback above, I can say that I feel my mom is safe at Brookdale Plymouth and that the staff is always willing to listen to my complaints. I have definitely had to adjust my expectations. One other good thing about Brookdale is that they allow my mom to have her cat as long as I keep the litterbox cleaned and take care of the cat. This is one of the reasons I chose Brookdale over many other places which don't allow pets.

Mixed thoughts

Is not what was expected. My parent had been there for several weeks and had complained about lack of timely response to support button calls. This was witnessed also by myself and my siblings on several occasions. Also had occasions where bathing needs were not addressed for days, since assistance was required. Moved to a different facility for more attentive and appropriate care. Facility staff was hit or miss....some were really warm and others not. Great program with the greeter / therapy dog Facility is a bit older but appeared clean and maintained. Layout is a bit confusing.

I toured this facility while looking for a place for my Mother. The person who gave me the tour was very nice and seemed to be knowledgeable. Every question I asked her, she knew the answer to. The rooms were clean and the residents looked like they were doing fine. However, there was an odor kind of like they used a lot of potpourri. We didn’t pick this facility because I didn’t like the area and it was further away from me. Even though this facility wasn’t for my Mother, I would still recommend other families to tour.

Unhealthy Environment

While the facility is lovely, the staff is friendly and the overall feeling is pleasant there are some very real negatives that aren't being addressed. The building loses heat frequently in the winter and a/c in the summer. Residents are uncomfortable particularly in the bitter cold. After many complaints and a couple of years, no progress to fix the issue has been made. The problem is that the HVAC system is not appropriate for our Indiana climate and the cost to replace it is a greater concern than their residents health and discomfort. I have had several conversations with the local manager and the Corporate manager and still my mother is without heat again this year. Not just once in a while but weekly. I wouldn't recommend this for your loved ones.

I did not go and tour Brookdale, but I had been over there a few times previously, so I knew what to expect from it when I was looking for living options for my father. They only had one bedroom available when I was looking, and it was a shared room. I just thought the community was overpriced for what it was.

No activities.

My mother has been at the Memory Care area of Rittenhouse in Michigan City for two years. The first year, she received exceptional care and activities. The last 6 to 8 months, we noticed the level of care has diminished and there are no activities. A monthly list of activities is posted in the dining area and in each residents rooms to look good, but the activities are not offered. Basically, she gets up to eat breakfast, lays in bed, gets up for lunch, lays in bed, gets up for dinner and lays in bed because there are no activities for her to engage in. When addressed with the Executive Director, I was told this was being worked on. Since this has been going on for so long, unfortunately, we are reluctant to believe things will change. How sad.

Bait and Switch!

We were promised that my grandmother could have her dog move in with her and now they say she cannot. I wish I had taped the tour but at least I had my aunt with me and she also heard everything that was promised. My grandmother is very stressed and misses her dog so much. The only reason I can't move my grandmother right away is that they do provide full medical capabilities and the stress it would put on her. The staff even agrees that the dog should be allowed to stay, he is very well behaved and would be good for all of the residents. They promised a room to my grandmother and that the dog could come and live with her. When we got there they temporarily moved her to another room and said the dog could not stay. They said he could visit her until she was moved to her regular room. Then they told me his visits could only happen if I stayed with the dog and took him with me when I went to my apartment that does not allow dogs. We were going to pay the fee for a staff member to be in charge of the dog at the community, but now they are saying that dogs are not allowed where my grandmother is residing. She misses her companion and best friend!

I was not impressed when I toured this community. The people I met were like high pressure sales people. The community was clean. The community is in a nice area.

Orchard Pard didn't work for us

We moved. Well actually they asked us to move. I kept asking for them to keep their promises for my memory care wife. They didn't have enough staff and the food, except breakfast, is less than mediocre. We actually went months with dirty dining ware. Itis fixed now. I am afraid that they prefer more profit to the care they promise. They didn't deliver for us. I never asked for more than the promised. I started visiting other facilities for memory care.[Removed]. What a great choice this has been. Things Orchard Pard said my wife would never do, she now does as routine. They have more staff and experience than Orchard Park. It pays off and it doesn't cost more.

I was able to take a tour and i was not impressed with this place at all. The staff was great and they were helpful, but the community felt like an institution. Not somewhere I would send my loved one. It just is not very homey at all.

Overall quality of care has ranged from high to low. It depends heavily on the professionalism, engagement and competence of the Executive Director. This position has been very inconsistent at Wynwood over the years. In addition, after our family member left Wynwood, a subsequent doctor's examination this year brought to our attention the use of a psychotropic drug. (Had never even heard this term before; Google it!). ...(The legal standard is that "informed consent" must be used for psychotropic drugs.) Recommendation is to definitely ask hard questions of the nurse and visiting doctor (who doesn't respond to family members) about this area of care and how they will communicate w/you.

Not all they promise.

Facilities are attractive, but attitude is mediocre. It is part of a large corporate structure and, perhaps, that affects the style and culture. The have an attractive "sales pitch," but have difficulty living up to their promises. The staff, for the most part is compassionate, but not always competent. The food is edible, but not always tasty and does not measure up to some of the better facilities of the area. It appears the staff is overworked.

Staff Issues

It has be an okay experience at here at Autumn Leaves. My mother seems to like it and that is nice to see. I have my concerns with the staff; I feel they don't follow through with my concerns and kinda blow them off which isn't nice. I have concerns about my mother's medicine and I have brought this up to staff and they don't communicate well with me regarding it. My mother loves the food, so there is some good things about it and some bad parts. I would suggest to take a look at this community for yourself and see if you like.

They charge you to do something and then they don't do it. Sometimes they do thins, sometimes they don't. A lot of it is hit and miss. They do not have enough staff members and they have a terrible turnover. They need to get someone in there who knows what they are doing. I am disappointed with them.

I was told that they had a beautiful Atrium, an enclosed courtyard for people to walk around. But it was kept locked, and not very well landscaped. It wasn't very accessible or inviting. I thought they had a very nice memory unit. All of the rooms were shared, in the assisted living section. I also felt that all the assisted living rooms were very dark.

Disruptive remodeling

The building has been undergoing an extensive remodel for about 18 months that is still far from finished. The noise and disruption are significant problems. The is dust and debris everywhere, and there are dangerous areas throughout the building where work is being done. Some residents, even ones who were told they would not have to move during the remodel, have had to move temporarily to other apartments within the building while their long-term apartments were having work done. Many of the public spaces on the first floor (library, beauty shop) have been unusable for months, with temporary programming done on another floor that has far less welcoming spaces. The staff keep saying how wonderful it will all be when the work is done, but I think many residents have found the disruption very stressful. Having to pay full rent during this long remodel is a huge rip-off.
