While many nursing home staff members are hardworking and compassionate, the reality is that not all facilities provide consistent, high-quality care. Staffing shortages, high turnover, and lack of oversight can contribute to environments where residents don’t always receive the attention they need and deserve. It’s important for families to understand that even well-rated facilities can fall short, especially when no one is watching. Here’s what families should keep in mind: • Frequent visits matter. Your presence sends a message to staff that someone is actively involved and watching. Residents with regular visitors often receive better attention and care simply because staff are more mindful of accountability. • Ask questions. Get to know the staff. Ask about your loved one’s hygiene, meals, medication, and mood. Follow up on anything that doesn’t seem right. • Observe the environment. Is it clean? Do staff seem rushed or inattentive? Are call buttons answered quickly? These are signs of how well the facility is functioning. • Document concerns. Keep a journal of any issues or changes you notice. If something seems off, bring it up—respectfully, but firmly. Follow up in writing if needed. • Understand the system. Many facilities are understaffed, and the best caregivers may be overwhelmed. This isn’t an excuse—it’s a call for families to be active advocates. Ultimately, nursing homes vary widely in quality, and no one cares more about your loved one than you do. Your involvement can make the difference between minimal care and meaningful care.

The staff is great. They care and make the en environment warm and home like. The kitchen staff provide delicious food in a great setting. Communication for specific issue is not always easy.

The staff is kind and helpful but not very responsive via email. You need to call and speak with someone. My dad says he does not like the food served very much.

We liked that she could have her own room even though she shares an area outside of her room with one other person. Staff have not been extremely accountable. They have had a lot of turn over. Once my mom settled she had a lot of friends and she enjoys the activities a lot. The food is good. They even served lobster rolls on memorial day. The social worker is top notch.

We are in a townhouse that is perfect for our needs. We both love all the green space. The staff are wonderful and they are always growing activities based on interest.

Friendliness of staff stands out. All of the staff are very friendly. The facility is well kept and they offer a variety of kinesethic and tactile activities for the Memory Care residents.

Southern in ambience and nature. A renovated older building. The residents have both privacy and fellowship. The food ranges from excellent to good. Love our one bedroom apartment. The only bad thing I have to say is about the maintenance crew. Our shower went from all icy cold, then they fixed it to scalding hot. Finally, got it right on the third try. Other than that, lovely place and people.

Value for cost - Unknown with no comparison. Staffing shortages on weekends. The staffing is our biggest complaint. I'm sure its like that everywhere.. no one wants to work and Indiana is a very small town

There is one particular nurse, [name removed] who was a school nurse in a school district I worked in. She is fabulous with patients & family. They have the MIND diet which is cooking geared at slowing the progression of Alzheimer's. Only con I have is staff could engage more with family more by phone & when we visit especially when it is like my situation & I drive 3 hours one way to visit & can't visit as frequently as I'd like. I would like to be kept in the loop more so I know his status.

Woodbourne Place is a very nice place for seniors. It is a small facility, that consist of 50 patients. On staff they have 2 nurses and a few aids. Betsy is the Manager and is wonderful. My father in law was there for 2 1/2 months. He made some friends. Food was good. They have great help working there. Activities, sitting area outside, 3 meals a day. We liked it there for my father in law. He was a fall risk, he had no falls there. They are very accommodating,My father in law came home with us in December before Christmas. He wanted to be with us, so we brought him home. They pay very much attention to the patients. He was well cared for. We had a good experience there. It is a nice place to bring your loved one to.

More staff is needed, the patient-to-aide ratio should be lower. 5:1. More staff who speak and understand English. Yes, we would recommend Bayshore Memory Care to other families based on the experience so far.

love the administrative staff they could do better with better CNA's. They're lazy some of them. You do have some good ones, but you have some very bad ones. As far as the cleaning it's clean, but it could be cleaner.

Happy she somewhat safe. Still not understanding the financial process yet. Trying to get the house sold. Not upstanding why her is so different from other clients there. Overall I'm happy she's starting to accept where she's at ...

Staff and faculty were all friendly. We usually visited on weekends so we mostly saw the same nurses. We were kept well informed of any issues like falls or illness as soon as it came up

The staff is very friendly and activities are great. The personal care of my parent is below what I expected and what I was told would be provided.

Staff are very professional and polite. It was clean. Residents and staff were interacting. Good care taker to resident ratio on memory care.

I chose this for mom because of all the places I reviewed/saw, this is where I would choose for me. Facility is clean, easy to get around, lots activites.move in can be a little stressful. Apartments seem average sized. Of course many are coming from large homes so is a huge adjustment. Single is pretty small for someone used to a home. Food isn't great but not bad either. Continental breakfast could and should be a lot better. Staff in bar/dining is very sweet. Front office and desk attentive as well. I recommend they get involved in activities.

[name removed] was great to work with during the sales process. Solutions driven but not pushy. Nice facility with many apartment options for independent living and onsite assisted living too.

The front desk is extremely friendly and helpful! Our first experience with marketing was horrible. When I explained mom's budget, she said basically sorry but that's not enough money and made me feel like we weren't good enough for courtyard. Fortunately I pushed back and we were connected with a different marketer who was fabulous and we were able to get mom a studio which fit her budget. Mom says everyone complains about the food...serving sizes are very small, food is either under or over cooked. Also they do not offer sodas at mealtime, but always have alcohol for happy hour. The activity calendar font is so small, it's nearly illegible.

Overall, my mom has had a very good experience at The Breakers. The included amenities provides my mom with easy, assisted living at a reasonable price. The actual apartment is really nice. We both like the layout and ample closet space.
