Friendly place with reservations

It is a fairly friendly community. They had been doing well with COVID. They take the residents temperature twice a day, meals are delivered to our apartment, but it is not very edible. I chose this community because they had two bedrooms apartments which we needed. I would recommend this community to other families but with reservations.

Needs Better Infection Control Management

As of [date removed], Atria Kew Gardens reported their last covid-19 positive test result on [date removed]. Therefore no family visitors have been allowed inside the building or in the outside space since mid-March 2020. Also, this is a highly corporate and inflexible facility. This is good in an emergency but not good when you are dealing with vulnerable seniors on a day to day basis. Otherwise the facility provides all the basics. Nothing special in any way. It has a kosher menu but very sadly does not have a Jewish sole.

It's all about the money for them

We were very disappointed with Atria. We signed a move in contract for the first of the month and then they said we couldn't move in until the [date removed] of the month. My mother in law was packed and moving from out of state and it was incredibly stressful. They never even an apologized to us. The food was terrible, the freezer was always broken , and they went through three chefs in three months. The residents contracted outside caregivers, and they were lovely people. At Atria, the front desk person with nice but the rest of the staff were rude and harsh. For example, when my mother in law was moving out, the manager stopped us, and in front of my mother in law said "you need to be out by the end of the day." It was really horrible . I would say to families, don't go there. It is not a good value for your money. We were incredibly disappointed by the entire experience.

Don't judge a book by its cover

My mother has been a resident for about 5 years. My chief complaint is regarding the food. As expensive as this place is, it definitely not worth it. The county home has better food and better portions. My mother should be on a low sodium diet and they offer ham a few times a week as one of the choices. The alternatives are often sandwiches, but are never given the choice of bread, ie. Whole wheat or rye as opposed to white bread. She doesn't like white bread so she chooses the ham. I never hear tossed salad as an option . The main vegetable is broccoli which she doesn't care for. What about peas, limas, green beans, corn and salad greens? Most of the staff is pleasant, but often newer staff is poorly trained. It's not supposed to be a place for Alzheimers patients, but they are constantly accepted. Would not recommend this facility except for a few amazing staff.

Residents don't get the care they need.

Atria is all about image and marketing. My mother lived here for 2 years in 2017 and 2018, and during that time she had 2 hospitalizations for dehydration and malnutrition. She also had a serious laceration that should have been stitched but wasn't. She left because she "fell during the night" and had broken bones. We never got any kind of clear explanation about what happened, and since her dementia was severe, she could not tell us anything. Their staff ratio changed while she was there and many of the personal care givers had to also become food workers. They were stretched too thin and could no longer be as attentive to residents as they used to be. In watching the care givers closely and getting to know them, there were a few I felt my mom was safe with. A few.

We didn't get what we paid for

I would say that the family really needs to be involved and stay on top of things. The communication was terrible. The place looked like a hotel but they need to be more transparent about the services they really can provide. In fairness to the community, I was there every single day and I noticed that the residents in the assisted living were happy but they are just not suited to care for residents in memory care. After my father passed away, my mother wrote a heartfelt letter with her concerns to the administrator and we hand delivered it the the community. She never received a response back. I would never recommend the Atria Longmont to anyone.

Communication problems...written and oral - incorrect information given

The GOOD news: the food is above average, most of the staff are friendly and helpful, different levels of care, & location is good. The BAD news: Two instances of important information about the facility with regard to health issues, told to me, were incorrect. I did not find out about the wrong information until I moved in. This information negates their own rules of the facility which were signed at contract signing appointment. Also, written information on Residency Agreement was misleading and unclear, as to what rules applied to what level of care. Ask before your lease signing appointment about any hidden fees and costs associated with moving in, (it wouldn't hurt to ask for a checklist of all costs). Some of these items were only introduced at the time of signing the contract. Trust in a facility is an important issue when making a life changing decision to move there.

Nice first impression

Clean place, great decor, some friendly desk staff, some not so friendly. The apartments ar3 adequate sizes, co7ld use a little updating, ex, the kitchen area is ver6 small and dated appliances and counter top, would be nice if the wall between the kitchen and living room was a half wall with counter top. So with that said, some of the aids are nasty to the residents. The house keeper are nice but they don’t do a thorough job, the microwave and refrigerators are never cleaned. And now for the main reason I’m giving it a low rating., I thought the staff could be trusted but my sisters pain pills, money, and jewelry have gone missing so that is why I took her out

Be leary before choosing Atria Draper

It was a sad day in June when our mother had to give up living on her own. We chose Atria Draper not knowing the true inside story to this facility. We were misled and lied to. There is no medical care, the nursing staff is very limited and we soon found out the aides are either inexperienced or not well trained. After being told there was an additional monthly charge to administer medicines the aides made errors in giving out the wrong pills and mixing up the days shown on the pill packs. Our Mom fell twice and we were never notified. If she were checked daily as promised, they would have known but instead they denied it. The huge bruises told the real truth. The administrators act like they are being bothered when asked questions and some of the aides are not kind. There are a couple that are very nice. For these reasons I would not recommend this as a new home for a loved one. This is intended for the rich and healthy who no longer wish to cook, clean, do laundry and don't want to be alone all the time. The cost is extremely high. Average people cannot afford to live here.

We canceled our tour here because of a schedule conflict that arose. We also lost interest in touring here based on information from brochures and others.

No two bedroom apartments period. No larger one bedrooms currently available to even view and none likely to become available anytime soon. All others are simply too small for us.

Don't Move Here!

Unfortunately, since my parent moved into this facility, and over the past 2 years, the level of care and attention to details- number of staff, food quality, cleanliness- has been deteriorating. The manager of the facility turns his head to ignore these changes, he is also argumentative!

I believe this property has full meal service included and that is something my mom is not looking for.

not what it seemed to be...

Before making any decision about where to put your loved one, read BEING MORTAL by Atul Gawande, which is about end of life decisions. Chapters 3,4, and 5 specifically discuss senior living facilities. The Atria is mentioned in chapter 4. Also, watch the documentary, LIFE AND DEATH IN ASSISTED LIVING, pbs.org/video/frontline-… Atria Briarcliff Manor is expertly marketed, as are many of these kinds of facilities. The look of the facility is very appealing to the family of prospective residents. However, I believe The Atria in Briarcliff Manor has the lowest level of licensing permitted in New York State. Many staff members are kind, but have no special training and that often shows up in the unknowing care that is provided. The current director, [name removed], seems ill-suited to her position. Rent increases can be a shock. [Date removed] Update My mother was evicted from her assisted living residence at, The Atria in Briarcliff Manor, New York in [date removed]. That facility called the police when my 97 year old mother, who had dementia, would not leave the new director's office until she got the response she wanted. The Alzheimer's Association advises that one does not argue with an individual who has dementia. But, that's what Atria's new director did, even though that facility houses dementia patients. My mother was first taken to a psychiatric ward and drugged. Subsequently, she was discharged/transferred to a top-notch geriatric psychiatric hospital some distance away. The geriatric psychiatric hospital treated my mother's condition successfully, but Mom was transferred to an assisted living residence near the hospital because the Briarcliff Manor Atria refused her readmittance despite the fact that their own nurse certified that my mother was greatly improved, and the geriatric psychiatric hospital recommended Mom's return to The Atria. Mom remained at the distant temporary assisted living facility, until we could research and find a local facility. Although her new residance care was about as good as one can get, my mother's health declined precipitously and she died in hospice on [date removed]. At 97, my mother was subjected to moves to four different facilities. Point 4 of a letter from New York elected officials and sent to [name removed](New York State Department of Health) on [date removed] regarding their concerns about the Manhattan 86th Street Atria, speaks to the perils of moving elderly people. "For many frail elderly, moving is either impossible or presents significant health risks often referred to as 'transfer trauma'..."

The food choices, food quality and table service at the La Jolla location are not anywhere near acceptable

My parents have lived at this location for over 5 years now, and they have never complained about the food, or the food service, until recently. They are considerate, patient, kind and appreciative people, who are satisfied with very little, so when they are constantly complaining about the food choices, quality of the food, and the table service, I feel compelled to do something about it - currently they say that on average only 2 out of 7 meals are OK in a week, and it has been like this for many months - more than I care to recall. They receive a weekly menu, and when they get to the dining room, the menu has changed, and their choices are limited. The only thing that they say is always good is the soup, and the salads are OK, however the protein is over or under-cooked and either tasteless or too spicy, and the vegetable choices are minimal. They tell me they, and others, send back their food on a regular basis, citing it as inedible. What an incredible waste on so many fronts - a waste of the money we pay to accommodate and feed them; a waste of food; a waste of the time I need to spend complaining about this. Further issues relate to the table service - they go down for their meal at 5:30, place their order, and they don't receive it an hour later, and in some cases due to kitchen and table service they only get to leave the dining room at 7:30 - 7:45, which means that they miss out on the entertainment, which starts at 7:00 pm, or their favorite TV shows. I am not sure if you are aware that elderly people look forward to their meals, and spending a couple of hours in the company of their friends, because they have already lost so much at their age - their quality of life and independence, possibly their spouses, and their health. One of the key elements to keeping them healthy is ensure they have good nutrition, and the comfort of companionship at a daily meal - I don't think it is too much to ask that they receive food choices that resonate with them, a selection of real vegetables (not potato as a vegetable), and a dining experience they enjoy, for the large sum of money that we pay. Everything else about the facility is lovely - it is in a great location, the remodel done in the last year or so has greatly improved the aesthetics of the environment, however the food is nowhere near acceptable - when asked if they would give up the visual remodel to have back the good food and service they used to have, the answer is a resounding yes! The do not eat breakfast in the dining facility, and very occasionally will get a sandwich to take up to their unit, so at least they deserve one tasty well prepared meal a day, and we deserve value for our money. There have been countless meetings with the residents and yourselves about this issue and nothing seems to have changed, so I would like to know what the plan is to resolve this for once and all - and I would like the courtesy of a response. I have submitted two inquiries about this via your websites in the past, and have received no response! And I would like to know why the General Manager of this location is not doing anything about what is going on?

Feels older. Art & chairs, etc. are outdated. Elevator was in bad repair (walls). Chairs in dining room showing signs of wear. Yet, they still want as much or more than other places. Only thing they have that others don't is a small indoor pool. Cost for 2nd person @ $800/month is the highest we have seen.
