We were only there for a week. The food was inedible, except for the breakfast. They have very small rooms. We left within a week because we couldn't stand it. If you can avoid going to live here, do so. They need improvement on all areas. Don't go to the Atria on Roslyn Harbor unless you have no where else to go. I wouldn't recommend this place. It was not a good experience.

Near the end of August in 2011, my mother entered the dementia unit of Atria, East Northport. Less than a month later she was in the hospital with a fractured hip. The details of her accident are horrific. She had fallen during the night and no one found her until the morning. I can't imagine that she laid there without calling out for help. But since the night aides routinely sat together in the common room, I am sure they were out of earshot. When they found her, they assisted her to her feet, helped her dress and somehow walked her to the common room. When I arrived after lunch, she was unable to even stand. No one had called to tell me of my mother's fall. Obviously no one had tried to walk her to the bathroom all morning. I later suggested to the director that perhaps the night aides could sit at the ends of the hallways as to be more alert to hear calls for help but I was told this is not possible. My mother was only allowed to return to Atria if I hired a private duty aide for the night shift. Wanting to keep her close to me, this is what we did. At one point, my mother's doctor started her on the patch for Alzheimer's Disease. I was not notified of this change in my mother's medical treatment but what I did notice was that suddenly my mother had severe diarrhea. This lead to bowel incontinence and I can still hear my mother saying to me, " I am a diaper baby now." It broke my heart but I had no idea what was causing the diarrhea. I spoke to the nursing staff about it to make sure they held her stool softener. It was only weeks later when I was suspicious that they were not holding the stool softener, when I insisted on seeing her medicine records that I saw the new medication listed. After googling it, I learned that it shouldn't be given to people weighing less than 100 lbs. My mother weighed 93lbs. Diarrhea is one of the main side effects. Even though my mother's diarrhea started within days of the first dose, a week later, the doctor increased the dosage she was getting. He said he was unaware of the diarrhea. This nightmare was compounded by another issue. The medication is dispensed through a topical patch. I read how you should never wear 2 patches at once. The nursing staff at Atria had no policy in effect regarding these patches and I eventually found out from the private night aide that my mother frequently was wearing 2 patches. My mother's condition continued to deteriorate and since supervision of these dementia patients was very minimal, I now hired a daytime aide too. Despite this fact, Atria now told me to take my mother to a nursing home. The next few weeks were the most stressful of my life. Local nursing homes were all full and I was told if I didn't find her a bed, they would send her wherever there was one. God answered my prayers when the other local assisted living facility, Birchwood, said they had a bed for my mother as long as her aides came with her. They even gave her a private room on the regular floor, a cheaper option than the dementia unit, since she would have private care. My mother died 6 weeks after this move. Not only did Birchwood not kick her out as she neared the end but the staff was totally supportive of my mother and me and the wonderful angels who took care of her. My advice to anyone starting on this journey with a loved one is to keep searching for private affordable help. If I had found my nursing angels when my mother was still at home, she could have stayed there. There is not enough general supervision for dementia patients in any of the facilities I had experience with.

Both my parents were here for one year. From the very first call I ever made to this place there was a problem. First of all they changed their telephone #, website, etc. I could never reach my parents by phone, or in person. I showed up numerous times to visit with my mom and they had NO IDEA where she was and further went on to explain "we're an assisted living community we do not keep track of our clients whereabouts" I responded sarcastically "So if my mom who has alzheimers were to walk out these front doors onto that very busy route of traffic she could"? "Yes" was their reply. When my father was dying they were the most insensitve people I have ever dealt with in my life. THey placed my call on hold for over 30 minutes while I was in dire need to talk with someone there about my father dying. Then when I hung up and tried to call in again the message kept saying they were unavailable. This place is BEAUTIFULLY built, maintained, landscaped, the staff seem very kind and helpful. They have so much to offer an independent senior...trips on the van, movies, crafts, music, arts, everything about this place appears to be amazing...... from the food, to the staff, to the interior decor, but my experience is/was that if you are looking for people who actually care at the core and will treat YOU THE FAMILY with respect, concern, compassion, best to look somewhere else. I was told they don't get involved with the "family". My dad passed away tonight and they had me on hold. Think before you sign.

It seems very good when you first walk in. It's a nice looking place. Some of the people are nice. 85% of the people that work here are not. The people that come here should be people that can take care of their selves. They only give you a room. It's really a nightmare. It's definitely not the place that they claim to be. This is not for people who need care. You have to beg them for things you need. You have to be all over them to get what you need.

Not happy at all, they quoted me ththe price of 2640.,and the price changed to 4470. Without any notification. I am moving my mother at the end of the month. I will tell everyone that I know what they did. I have lived in this area for 50 years and I know a lot of people. Half of the services that were offered have not been given. My mother was there for almost 2 weeks and is paying top dollar and nobody has even offered to help her take a shower.

My mother has lived in this facility for the past year. She has not been given medicine as prescribed by her doctors. When she does not receive her medication, she calls me crying, saying she wants to [removed]. When I've called the staff they shrug it off saying they "got busy" and "forgot" to give my mother her medication. The food quality is marginal. This disappointed me as the Atria where I am from serves excellent food. If it was just up to me, I would move her to a place where the care and food was better.

Our initial tour and meeting led us to believe this would be the "Place for Mom". However, we were led to believe this would be her last place to reside only to be told she could not return after she was hospitalized. We offered to pay for private duty nurses around the clock but received a cold letter telling us that Atria was terminating her lease. This has been a difficult process since now we are left to search for another residence for her. The cost and the emotional strain on my mother has been terribly upsetting. I would NOT recommend Atria!!!

My Mom has lived in this facility for 11 years. We moved her to the new "Life Guidance" floor last year - she was one of the first residents of the new floor. She has been a guinea pig from the start. The have had five different directors on the floor since it's inception. They have not come through with the level of care that was promised. We are paying $6800 per month - that is "Rolls Royce" level care. We are receiving -at best - Volkswagon level care. The memory care unit is grossly understaffed and staff quits on a weekly basis. (As do there Directors - as I stated above.) Call the Atria and when you are put on hold - listen to their "glowing description" of what the Life Guidance floor has to offer. It is a complete joke. We are currently being forced to relocate my Mother due to the gross lack of care. This is not the caregivers fault - it is management and the lack of hiring competent people who will stay. We have been waiting since September 14th for any one in management to contact us about our concerns. They have not. We went in at 9 am today - there is not one level of management in the entire building - AGAIN. Run, don't walk - to find your loved one a different place. You will be doing your loved one a great service to NOT have them live here.

Our experience with Atria of Riverdale was terrible. When we first visited the facility's dementia unit, we noted and mentioned that our mother seemed less alert and less mobile than the residents we saw there. We were assured that Atria would be able to care for her. We found the staff to be friendly and the atmosphere pleasant so we put a deposit on a room. The next day we were told someone else wanted that room so we had to take it immediately. We decided to take it and moved my mother in. A few days later we were told that Atria was not, after all, able to care for her. That her needs were beyond the scope of care they are able to provide. Furthermore, they wanted us to hire a private aide to be with her 24 hours a day at our expense while we searched for appropriate accommodations. We were horrified and terribly upset to hear this news. We had expressed our concerns and they were dismissed. We found a nursing home and transferred my mother. She died a few months later. We feel that Atria did not practice due diligence in determining my mother's needs. They then were callous in their treatment of us. The actual caregivers were competent and kind, but I would never recommend this company.

My Uncle was a resident at Atria Riverdale last year and used their healthcare (24 hr care) services. The aides admittedly left him alone for extended periods of time that led to serious injuries. He suffered greatly in his last few months. I would not recommend any Atria facility or the health care services they provide. We had a horrible and expensive experience. Beware of placing loved ones here.

First of all I believe we were told anything we wanted to hear just to get us to put our family member there. Three other facilities told us that my father-in-law would require home health aides for two twelve hour shifts. The Atria at 86th Street told us that they deal with situations like my father-in-law all the time and this would not be necessary. We wanted to believe them. My father-in-law moved in and within a week we were told that he needed home health aides for two twelve hour shifts. On top of the $8000 a month to live in the building we are now paying an additional $8000 for the aides. Because my father-in-law is unable to be alone at all he can not go to the main dining room, where they do not allow home health aides to stay. He can only go to one place to eat and the menu is the same every day with the exception of one special to chose from. The dining room has a new menu each day. Paying $8000/month and he is not able to eat the food they raved about when we were deciding where he would reside. We were never told any of this prior to him moving in. We were also told he could spend the rest of his life here. Now we are told that if he is not ambulatory he has to move out. My father-in-law has Alzheimer's and each move is difficult and leads to more confusion and deterioration, aside from the added expense of another move. We have tried to address these issues but my sister-in-law called everyday for a week, leaving messages, and got no response. I called four times in one week, leaving messages and went to the building and left a hand written note for the social worker and still got no response. If you look at the reviews, a number of the bad reviews are from people who lived there or had a family member living there. A lot of the good reviews are from people who have just toured. You don't know anything about this place just by looking at the fancy building and listening to the hype. We needed a fill in home health aide on a holiday, which the Atria provided without giving him any information about my father-in-law. He fell twice in one day! My rating tells the story, the place is clean, with a lot of activities but for this type of money that you can not even get a response is ludicrous. We are close by so that one of us goes by multiple times a week but I can only imagine if we didn't live by and had to rely on communication from the staff to see if our loved one was okay. The decision to place my father-in-law at the Atria 86th Street has made an extremely difficult time exponentially more difficult. We regret it every day and they continue to give us new reasons to regret it each new day.

My father resided at Atria East Northport for less than 1 month. He was taken to the ER twice during this time. Once for a fall and the second (and last) time for a urinary tract infection that was nearly sepsis. This is a man who was hardly sick a day in his life. The staff at Atria did not seem to notice that there was a significant change in my father. No one was accountable for the lack of care that he received. It was unsafe and unsanitary. Soiled clothing left on the floor, food left on the floor after meals. No wipes on the entire unit. I wrote more than one letter to president of Atria, John Moore. Although corporate got back to me I never received the decency of a reply from him. The quality they claim on their website is very misleading. My father walked into Atria and after less than 4 weeks was carried out on a stretcher. He will never walk again. He is now in a nursing home. This is after my family was told by Greg that we would see "a spring in his step" after just a few weeks of being with memory care "experts". The aides were negligent and NO ONE checked on the residents. There were NO activities for residents on P2 other than meals. The TV was on constantly. If you are considering Atria East Northport as a residence for your loved one I urge you to visit the unit they will be on. P1 is very different from P2. My father was in P2 memory care. We were never shown P2 on tours. My mother now calls it "the forgotten floor". Leanne claims to visit several times each day. I was there at all different times of day and never saw any member of the staff other than the aides there. These dementia patients are left unsupervised because there is not enough staff to care for everyone. It is unacceptable. It was a devastating experience for my family. We will never recover and most importantly, my father will never recover.

When we toured everything here looked great, and seemed like it would work out fine on paper. This was not the case. They recently had a large staff turnover and the quality has declined rapidly. Out what must be a hundred employees I only met two that were helpful or caring at all. The care was neglectful, and we really didn't feel like our loved one was safe here. We moved him out after only a few months. I really wouldn't send my worst enemy here.

At first Atria at Tamalpais Creek seemed to be a great place for my Dad. Nice people working there, good food, beautiful surroundings, relaxed and not crowded. The sales person who we were talking to about my dad moving in sounded interested in his wellbeing both socially and physically. Immediately after he moved in, she evaded questions about the facility, I.E. basic questions about his medication management, services provided, special dietary needs and how they could be met, general questions about the facility, and treated my family “rudely”. After a few months my Dad’s needs increased, and we began paying for higher levels of care. It quickly became painfully obvious that Atria was incapable of assessing his increasing needs and reacting to those changes. It routinely took over 10 minutes for them to respond when he pushes the call button to request assistance. In case of an actual emergency, that could be the difference between life and death. Unfortunately, because of their incompetence at Atria, we had to move my Dad after only 6 months to a facility nearby that charges considerably less and provides a higher level of care. As an assisted living facility that provides 3 squares and a cot, Atria at Tamalpais Creek is fine. If you are hoping for more, go elsewhere.

I'm writing this for my grandma who was living here and we immediately got her out. The food was just awful, it made her sick at one point. The nurse on the AL side did not know what she was doing. I over heard her talk to the medication lady that the nurse "accidentally" gave a resident a wrong medication. Clearly that's not what a family member wants to hear when their walking pass the nurse station. I heard great reviews before the new management came in. This new management is complete rubbish! They kept saying that they are trying to get better but how long is it going to take? Are they going to keep making medication errors? If you love your mom or dad DO NOT TAKE THEM TO ATRIA CARROLLTON!

I had a terrible experience at the Atria and wouldn't recommend it to anyone. They aren't regulated by state or local governments. The primary goal is access to money. I have multiple sclerosis. Management, nor medical staff knew how to handle this condition. The facility wasn't set up for a fragile population. The physical structure wasn't remodeled to handle the problems of the elderly or disabled. My friend was denied access to mental health services.

My 91 year old friend signed up and went there - she's still there - and 3 days later she was robbed. The head of houskeeping went up to her room later and asked HER to empty out her pockets, accusing her of the theft. They presented her with a bill for $11,000 (which nearly gave her a heart attack, because she didn't understand where the bill came from). I called and called and called and no one in management would return my calls. When I finally reached someone in management , they did not explain to either me or my friend where this bill came from. She fell and no one from Atria called me or her family to give us any updates on her condition.
