My family member has been a resident of Alto since it was known as Bickford, and then Charter Senior Living. We have been extremely pleased with the care given until Allegro Management took over in early 2018. Since then we are seeing a dramatic turnover in nursing and CNA staff. Wonderful gifted people who have been providing dedicated care for years are leaving. And new hires quit or don’t show up for work. I believe one of the most important things in a senior citizen’s life is consistency, especially for those with memory issues. Being cared for by someone who knows them, their daily needs, likes and dislikes goes a long way towards providing them with the ultimate quality of life. I am holding on to hope that this facility could return to its original greatness, IF Allegro Management wakes up and fixes what is broken before it’s too late.

Most of the time the community had so many technical problems with their emergency call buttons. I didn't feel that my loved one was secure because the emergency buttons most of the times were unavailable, so she didn't have someone to assist her right away. The meals were not good they didn't have much taste to them. The community was kept clean and some of the staff were nice.

Took a unannounced visit to see Bickford on a Saturday . We were unimpressed with the two staff members we met . They were very nice, but one of them was so sick with the flu that he had no business being there under any circumstance. Outside areas of memory care had lots of stored poles and construction debris. we found the place very messy and unorganized.

There are a lot of issues here. The staff doesn't seem to be getting all of the training they need. There is some block in the system somewhere. It is my sense that it's very disorganized. There was a change in ownership recently, and most of the key positions, the executive director and such, are new, and that is a big part of the problem. I feel like if I hadn't been there as often as I am there would have been a lot of things that went unnoticed. When I bring things up they give me the appropriate answer that they think I want to hear, but afterwards I either don't see the change, or whoever has been talked to and had to make a change gives me attitude. They put too much responsibility on me to take care of things, like they will call me when he is agitated to calm him down but they don't want to keep me in the chain of command when it comes to keeping me informed. I shouldn't have to ask them to mop, or why other things haven't been done. Things go missing, I know they aren't responsible for them, but when I bring them up, I just get a blank look. I would say ask a lot of questions before you go here, and just hang out, I know nobody thinks that they have the time for that, but do it anyway. There was a lot of turnover here. I feel that I got persuaded verbally, that the care would be so much more hands on and personal than it turned out to be. They also told me that they would have many stimulating activities, and that didn't really turn out to be the case either. They would have things on the activities calendar that didn't match what they were doing that day, and the same for the food, it wouldn't match what they were actually eating. The food was about average, maybe a three, not terrible, but not great either.

We were exceedingly disappointed. We were not happy with her entire universe when she was there was being parked in front of the tv or herded in and out of the dining room activities were unimaginative and sparse. and there were instances of something grievious happening in the room and no one knew for six or more hours. We were not pleased with the food. The dining room used the same place mats at every meal and they are not washable placements. There were injuries that were not reported to us. They were giving incorrect doses of medication. Above all else never once did I see the director on the third floor the Alzheimers unit. They were in the middle of remodling the first floor Alzheimers unit. They had a few good caregivers, two or three on the night shift. I wouldn't send anybody there if it was free!

I moved my mother from assisted living to Emeritus, which is a memory care facility. They advertise that as their forte adn she got more simulation and interaction in assisted living than she even comes close to at Emeritus and the price was $1700 less a month so we're paying for things that we're not getting. The people are like ones you'd encounter in an asylum. One of them came into my mother's room and spit on her cat. It's distressing for my mother that some of the people cry all the time. Theft has been a problem even though everything she has, has her name on it. Once we moved in, it was not as advertised.

My mother developed a UTI in the first week and had to go to ER to have it treated on Christmas Day. There seems to be not much of a UTI prevention plan in place nor in house treatment. Just as she recovered from the UTI and seemed to be settling in she spilt her soup at dinner resulting in burns and a visit to urgent care. Clearly this should never have happened. She died on [date removed] only having been admitted on [date removed]. It is a beautiful facility with some excellent staff such as [name removed] (head nurse but constantly changing) and the activities director [names removed]. The staff is constantly being changed in and out which probably didn't help my mother's situation. The head nurse atleast should be stationary. Beautiful facilities and many activities for those who are still mobile. Sadly it was not a good experience for my mum.

My mother has lived here for 3 months and after many staff changes, we continue to have issues with the care provided and constant issues with medications. All kinds of things were promised, however, we are very unhappy and are considering moving her. I see reviews from 2016 about renovations. That's what we were told in Nov. 2018, and it is now June 2019 and they have still not been done!!! Mom's apt. hasn't been cleaned for 3 months as staff continue to quit. Director, chef, housekeeping and nursing staff have all quit!!! Food is not good and don't provide a variety. If you can find somewhere else, go there.

My mom has lived here for about a year. I've gone to a couple of meals with her and the food quality is very poor and small portions. Everything is either fried or canned. No variety to speak of, no choices allowed; they make the menu and that's what you get. Very long wait time when you ring for assistance, sometimes up to 2 hours or more. Very high employee turn over. Incorrect charges on the monthly bill, for things we didn't request or need. There have been times when medication was questionable. For example, the pills looked different than what is normally taken. There is no delivery service allowed or mom could have her meds delivered and take them herself. Wonder if there is a kickback for the facility to be the only source of Rx. They used to have transportation service for appointments twice weekly, now only on Tuesdays. I feel that when the rate is over $3K per month, the service, care and amenities should be impeccable, or at least excellent. I would definitely NOT recommend this living facility. As a point of reference, we have had previous experience with other places and realize that some things are going to be similar no matter where you go, however this has been a very disappointing experience, to say the least.

Initially, we were impressed with this facility. Now, after yet another new owner, the service here has declined rapidly. Local management is complacent and unresponsive. The facility cannot accommodate the acuity of the residents with the few LPNs and CNAs available. Senior activities are now minimal because one person cannot accommodate everyone and he cannot be present at all times. Regret that A Place For Mom referred us to this facility. For the prices charged, I would highly recommend checking out other facilities.

Maybe their Assisted Living side is OK, BUT their Memory Care has been absolutely terrible for my loved one. He comes up with bruises all the time. He exhibits 'typical' late stage dementia/Alzheimer's behavior that they have now told us after just a few months they are "not equipped" to handle. However, we explained my dad's condition before choosing them and of course they said everything would be 'great', they had no problems with his wandering, incontinence, impatience, etc. But, now, they "can't handle" it. He "escaped" from their "Secure" Memory Care Unit right through their front door entrance. Numerous issues, poor management, frequent turnovers in staff, un-trained staff, understaffed, etc. - at least for the "Memory Care" Unit, which maybe should be called the "Forgetful Seniors" unit, because they can't deal with true Dementia/Alzheimer's victims.

5/12/16 - my grandmother was a resident at this facility for 11 years through 3 owners Sunrise, Tranquility and finally Bickford. Of the 3 Bickford has proven to be the worst. In the almost 4 years since they've acquired the facility it has continually declined. [removed] She was very happy there until the last few weeks of her life. Sadly since her death very few changes have been made in a management presence during the weekends. My advice is if you put your loved one here and they require a good amount of care you need to make sure you visit often especially on weekends. I was there at least 5 days a week and it turned out not to be enough. It's a beautiful facility and was once a thriving community and while there are some amazing staff there there are more that just do not care. I think it can be a wonderful place again but changes need to be made.

As far as the regular floors I do not have a problem, staff was always very nice and pleasant but when my family member was moved to the 2nd floor Memory unit my feelings changed dramatically. The staff on the 2nd floor are mean and uncaring, the night shift is the worst. I do understand it is a hard thing to deal with but if you are not able to deal with patience with memory loss than they should not be working on the floor.I do have to say the activities director on the 2nd floor is very nice and does try to keep the residence active as best she can. It is a very sad and depressing floor. I truly hope something changes very soon for the sake of these poor residence.

The people running the place are the nicest people. Terry is terrific and the receptionist, Dawn, is the best. However, there is very little for the people living there to do besides bingo, which most men don't play. When you walk into the facility, most of the people in the lobby are sleeping. When they have some terrible singers come to the home, the people are sleeping during their performance. The food is the worst I have ever witnessed. I was going to eat dinner with my husband last night and the menu was a meatball sub or a tomato filled with egg salad and two small cookies for desert. When I got there after dinner, a group of people were sitting around and lobby. We got into a conversation and everyone agreed they definitely need to improve the quality of the food. It is awful. I am taking my husband out of Emeritus Thursday because he hates it there. There is nothing for him to do all day. He went to the restaurants twice and the service was so bad and it took so long, he didn't want to go again. It is a bad situation all around. He was there a month before someone changed the sheets on his bed. It is supposed to be "assisted living" but I do not see much assistance going on there.

After more than 2 years of CONSTANT follow-ups, meetings, & conference calls with Emeritus at Ocoee management for problem after problem, we recently moved our loved one to a phenomenal facility. At Emeritus at Ocoee (not a complete list): (1) our loved one was mis-medicated at least 6 times (that we know of) (2) med techs did not read med labels to properly administer meds (3) memory care in particular was not clean (e.g., cushions reeked of urine, dirty Depends left in residents' rooms garbage cans) (4) TV used as a baby sitter while some staff sat around reading magazines or talking, esp. on weekends, instead of interacting with the memory care residents (5) Alzheimer's residents (including our loved one) sent to the ER ALONE with out-dated meds list (while family member rushed to get to ER before wrong med or dosage given) (6) few stimulating activities in memory care unit because "no money" - done on a shoestring (7) took days or WEEKS for something to get done properly, from updating a meds list to proper dispensation of a med to special food prep/food needs We were totally stressed out and fed up the entire time our loved one was there -- every visit was coupled with another problem, another follow-up, a need for another meeting or call or email -- CONSTANT AND ON-GOING the ENTIRE time up through and until we moved our loved one in 2013. Management made promises, most of which never happened unless there was no extra cost to Emeritus. Some staff good -- not enough of them -- but most have no common sense, don't care about the residents (esp. in memory care where attentiveness and caring is needed), and are horribly inefficient. We were told incompetent aides were "counseled" but could not be fired! Services are better in assisted living for the most part with more activities for those who are not as cognitively impaired. Emeritus at Ocoee advertises its "brain health program," but it is essentially non-existent, esp. in the memory care unit. We have seen a vast improvement in our loved one since the move to the new [removed] more engaged, smiles more, and is much cleaner (as is the new facility itself).
