American House

Onboarding was not smooth with medical staff and dispensing medications early on. They did however get it right after a few days. The staff is excellent. It is very clean! The food is excellent!

The staff was very friendly! I liked the idea that they do not use agency staff, staff is permanent and seem to be treated well. Three therapies are available which is a plus. My concern was with the size of the rooms. Also, in Memory Care, residents must share a bathroom. We have had experience with this as my mother was in a memory care facility and this did not work for her. Also Memory Care residents are allowed in other resident rooms which will result in lost clothing and other items.

I was greeted and made to feel welcome. [name removed], who led the tour, gave me a small gift bag. Before the tour, she gave me a folder containing info on American House. She clearly explained the monthly price breakdown, as well as mentioning additional fees for pets, medical assistance, etc. [name removed] introduced some of the staff., who were well-groomed, friendly, and polite. We saw residents happily participating in activities. One of the residents was walking in the hall with an adorable small dog; the facility appeared pet friendly. I saw a menu posted near the cafeteria. The meal options sounded appealing. [name removed] said the chefs offer dietary accomodations. Housekeeping and laundry were explained. [name removed] explained staff-coordinated transportation to medical facilities, shopping, and off-site activities. Next we visited two apartments. They were well-lit and immaculate. Each unit has its own temperature controls. This place was beautiful. I would be comfortable living here.

Biggest issue for us has been the lack of communication - there is no handbook or guidelines. If a person doesn't have a strong advocate, they could get lost of shuffle.

I would say 5, but my mother-in-law says she's tired of the food. The staff I think is absolutely amazing. They are very friendly and helpful and go out of their way. I have been there for events. I think the food is amazing. I think they are very lucky to have the chef they have. It's a very clean place. The maid service is good, but they do not all speak English, which really irritates my mother-in-law. I have to say that I feel wonderful that my mother is in a safe caring environment. I do not worry about her at all and I'm there 2 to 3 days a week. The size of her apartment is perfect. She's able to go to the bathroom and bedroom and kitchen with no problem.

I have been looking for a memory care facility for my father. American House in Jenison is one of the places that I toured. The facility was clean, all the staff I encountered were friendly, and all of the residents that I saw in the community areas seemed quite content. The set up for the memory care section is appropriate for somebody with Alzheimer’s or dementia. There are good programs in place to actively engage the residents. The community areas are set up nicely for residents to visit with each other. It’s in a good location within Jenison and not too far from the highway. Ultimately, I placed my dad somewhere else, but that was only because my dad needed skilled nursing that was slightly more than American House provides as an assisted living facility. If my father had been able to be placed into an assisted living facility, I would have chosen American House - Jenison.

Overall the tour was great. The person giving the tour was wonderful. She was very accommodating and knowledgeable. The facility and or community wasn’t quite what I was looking for. But I will still include it when I present all the communities that I’ve visited to my family. Thank you

I really haven't been around much do to the holidays. But like almost everywhere you have people that meet up each day there seems to be clickes. I need to get out and find somethings that I like to do to meet some people. There have been a few people in the halls going to and from the dining room that have said hi and introduced themselves. The holiday gathering s were too crowded and everyone was with friends they already knew. I just need to get out more. I'm waiting for some music or movies that I would like to see.

Everyone I’ve come into contact with in my 20 months living here have been very nice! The food served is very tasty with an additional four options if you don’t want what is being served on any particular day. I was allowed to do anything I wanted in my apartment. I painted—not because it needed it, but because I wanted a light green instead of the pale yellow it was. I replaced the kitchen and bathroom rusty chrome handles and hinges because I felt they definitely needed an update! I replaced the kitchen and bathroom faucets because they too were old and I felt unsightly. I replaced the ceiling fixtures, which also were outdated. I made these changes because I enjoyed being here and thought this would be my last stop. I was not made aware of their penchant for rent increases -failed to inquire about it before I signed the lease., I would not have had I known there would be large rent increases yearly! Fair or not for me they were unexpected and unplanned for so I am moving .

Just raised rent after only being there 6 months to $[removed] more each month. The main reason we chose this facility initially was because they offered memory care, and it was the cheapest.

Overall, an improvement over [removed]. Generally we are pleased with this facility. The laundry service is inconsistent (lost a clothes hamper already) and the food is mediocre. But, overall the staff is friendly and caring. We are satisfied with American House so far (just two months in).

4 all across the board. Very clean and modern. Yes, we would recommend American House Village at Bloomfield to other families based on the experience so far.

They have Good staff. Good entertainment. Food good in main dining room. Nice roomy apartment. Prices up 8%+ next year!

Some good and some not so good. Apartment size is adequate. Food is amazing, shuttle service is not as it was described (won't take mom to doctors appointments at Blodgett because it's too far but take them on a trip to Horrocks. Seems weird.

When we worked with [name removed] who was the director there we were able to get our questions answered. He even used to call me daily. Well the day before we moved [name removed] in to American House [name removed] transferred and was replaced by [name removed]. She is not very friendly and when you ask questions you can't really get a complete answer. So we are very disappointed in that aspect. Otherwise the nurses and caregivers there are friendly and [name removed] actually leaves his room to eat in the cafeteria which he never wanted to do before. So even with his memory loss he is doing more at American House than before.

Friendly, clean, knowledgeable. Secured facility. Not many residents in the community area at the time of my tour. Plenty of information provided and all my questions answered. Will be interested in a second visit during an activity or dinner to meet more staff and residents.

Meals are decent, staff is very friendly, the main area where they have occasional entertainment is basically part of the lobby and way too small and loud, should have a separate room nearby, several residents feel the same. The facility is kept very clean and brightly lit and the rooms are spacious and housekeeping and the maintenance crew the best I can tell do a great job. Very limited if any visitor parking normally available near lobby.

Wonderful. It is my home with wonderful, loving people.

The food was good, [name removed] was the director and she was always very responsive, the building is very pretty and well kept, the rooms are clean and do not look dated. Yes, I would recommend the community.
