Look at all facilities first

My mother has been at this facility for a little over a year. The staff such as the CNAs and maintenance are wonderful and caring. While I agree that the place is well maintained and very clean I have many concerns for a vulnerable senior that cannot advocate for themselves. Examples that we have encountered are: 1. Two falls that resulted in long response times. In one of the falls my mom remained on the floor w a fractured arm for over 35 mins with no response despite her call bell being activated. She called me at home to tell me that had fallen and needed help getting up. Second fall w no injury with lengthened response time because of an issue w a call bell system. 2. One incidence of the staff giving her another patients medicine because they threw hers away in error. My mom told them it was not her medication and called me. 3. During this COVID pandemic I personally noted a staff member wheeling a pt in the facility with no mask as well as the pt. When I called to discuss they tried to deny it but it was witnessed by another staff member. Once I called it to the persons attention they apologized. On sev occasions I note residents walking the facility w no mask. The response is that trying to get them to wear masks is very difficult. 4. Multiple communication issues w the staff that require me to follow up consistently. My mother was a DNR when she went into the facility which was discussed on arrival. I found out this past week that the paperwork was never signed. It took me several requests to get it done. 5. Long response for answering call bells and requests for pain meds. 6.my mother stated there is just not enough help when she needs it and food is a consistent complaint. 7. When my mom moved in they never disclosed they have a catered living rate that is 1000.00 less. My mom found out about it from other residents. When I requested the rate she was given the rate but I felt it was very underhanded not to discuss this or offer it at her entrance. I called the State and had a meeting with the facility sev months ago. Things change for a few weeks and go back to normal. I get tired of the inconsistency. My mom does not want to leave because of her friends. I can’t relax or feel comfortable she is taken care of. I have to follow up on practically everything.

Visited for a possible home for my father. The moment we entered the lobby there was the odor of urine. It was present throughout the building. The apartments are starting to show their age. The fans to move the cool air from the main living area to the bedroom were noisy. Rooms were fairly spacious for an assisted living facility, but I question the cleanliness.

Review of The Hearth At Franklin, Franklin, Tn

My mother feels like the environment is more like a hospital instead of a home. Different activities get cancelled and the residents that do show up are left with nothing to do. We are thinking about moving her to [Removed]. I feel like [Removed] must be doing something right due to the fact that they are completely full to capacity whereas there are plenty of empty rooms to rent at The Hearth. There is a constant turn over which is another problem. It is almost impossible to talk to someone that is in a position to make decisions. It is, to say the least, a poorly run business. The rooms which should be handicap accessible are not. The door into her apartment and into her bathroom door can accommodate a wheelchair, but not her closet door. Her clothes are hung on her dresser in her room so she can reach them. I could go on and on, but I think this should help people in making decisions for their parents. My mother is 94 years old and until she can be moved, I hate the thought that her last years are not in the best living situation.

The outside of this community is just beautiful and the staff did a great job showing us around, taking their time and answering all our questions. What really concerned us the most was the elevated and long hallways leading down to the apartments. We knew that this was just not going to be a good fit for my mother-in-law.

I Didn't See Good Things

We were there for 10 months and it did not work out. There were some changes in the care and they couldn't provide the care anymore. I also saw tremendous changes and a huge staff turn over. There was a lot of attitude from the techs. The staff would complain a lot about being short staffed and overworked. This was not a good sign. It did not start this way when we first moved in.

To Soon to Tell

The facility is gradually being renovated. The majority of the apartments and outdoor cottages are for independent living. When we toured there was no central life alert type of system only pull chains in the bedrooms and bathrooms. It's a large facility and easy for a new person or visitor to get lost. There is no hallway sigange to help lead people which is an easy and in expensive solution. It's not wired for internet access either. My Mom moved into independent living while on wait list for assisted living. It's isolating as there isn't much staff for independent living so we're paying for healthcare assistance to help with the basics of getting acclimated. It's a very difficult adjustment for a person with memory challenges.

Aspen Village Experiences

All in all Aspen is just average. Communication with nurse and managers is below average return phone calls never come on the same day the GM has never returned a phone call. The staff have proven to be very friendly and kind. It is difficult to speak to one person that can relate to your loved one and answer questions as to their adjusting to their new environment . It is not easy for us to be there every day so communication is very important since some of us live in another state. We are hoping things will improve.

Unprofessional

At first glance & visit, Brookdale at Pleasant Hills seemed the best Assisted Living place for our Mom...It is a pretty location & place. We moved her there 05/15/15. Now 30 days later, we have care concerns....inconsistent care & lack of care we are paying for. Brookdale's reaction to expressing our concerns has been extremely unprofessional, teetering on childish. An aid tells my Mom that I had blessed them out (paraphrasing), now my Mom is worried they will not be nice to her. As the POA, any heartburn that Mgmt may have with me should NEVER trickle down to my Mom. There have been missed meals, missed/lost laundry, only occasional checking on her, billing errors, etc. Apparently the honeymoon is over and the monthly income is what is first & foremost. At this time I am waiting for them to address our concerns. I will update when/if our concerns are addressed.

WATCH OUT

MY parents are there but they go up on the fees all the time . Just received a notice that they are going to charge over 1000 to administer meds and personal care claiming that we have not been charged in the past when the contract states that our fees include 200 towards meds. Need more activities that might be of interest to residents. Food needs to be more palatable - forget trying to be elegant most of that generation does not care for. They also will not return phone calls

Pros and cons

They did a good job getting her walking again, but I think they didn't supervise her enough. When she arrived she was too week to walk to the bathroom on her own. In two weeks she was walking. But I believe they should have had staff escort her to the dining hall daily instead of letting her walk on her own after only two weeks. She had a fall in the dining hall, broke a hip, was hospitalized and went into cardiac arrest and died. After she died I was surprised that no sympathy card was sent to our family. But they did send a bill for the meals she had served in her room. She wasn't there for a month before she died from this accident. I am very impressed with their physical therapy services, but not impressed by the supervision. Their dining room and meals seem better than most. Activities... Not terribly impressed. The only thing I ever seemed to catch when I was visiting was chair aerobics. But my mom was only there about 2-3 weeks. Location is great. Easy to take your loved one out for lunch or coffee. Mall within walking distance.

Room for improvement

The staff for the most part is great, with some exceptions. The food is decent. The Care is not very good. The activities are nonexistent, practically. That could have something to do with the residents and that they are older and not as interested in leaving their rooms. cleanliness could be better.

Skip this one, its just lipstick on a pig

This facility was clean, but there was nothing particularly impressive about it. Unfortunately, our overall experience was very disappointing, especially in memory care. The staff in memory care often seemed overwhelmed and stressed, and simple requests felt like a burden to them. My grandmother’s needs were rarely met, and when I tried to communicate my concerns and dissatisfaction, I felt completely dismissed afterward. One of the biggest disappointments was the lack of meaningful activities. Esther often had to beg to participate in activities, and most “activities” in memory care consisted of TV shows blaring at maximum volume. The facility sells a very appealing image and makes a lot of promises, but in reality, they struggled to provide the level of care and engagement that was advertised. The maintenance gentleman was wonderful and went above and beyond, but unfortunately that level of care did not extend throughout the facility. Residents seemed to get lost in the shuffle. I also strongly believe we should never have been pushed into memory care. My grandmother should have had the option to remain with residents more similar to her condition rather than being grouped solely with those experiencing severe mental decline. Toward the end of her stay, my grandmother suffered a very large skin tear and developed a serious UTI. After we gave notice that we were moving her out, it felt like her care declined even further. On moving day, we realized how severe the UTI had become, and she ended up hospitalized for weeks, followed by several more weeks of physical therapy. The medical bills totaled thousands of dollars. Based on our experience, I would not recommend this facility or the recommendation we received through A Place for Mom.

Resident review

My Dad was a resident in the memory care center for 3.5 weeks. They lost his dentures on the third day so he couldn’t chew food. They never altered his menu and continued to give him meats. He should have been on mechanical soft diet. I don’t believe that they woke him for all meals as he sleeps a lot. They do not participate in the Medicaid waver program and we will need that so we had to move him. We knew that they don’t participate but the changed his level of care the day before he was to move in and we had no other options.

Not as good as it seems

I really liked the facility however I did not care for the way we were made to feel it was all about money. the way that they told us to leave and let them do their job and then immediately called us back and told us that my father was an elopement risk. We had to hire a babysitter to sit with my dad for 12 hrs a day (at $[fee removed] per hr) for 4 days because they said they could not keep him there without assistance. Then my father was so adamant about going home when we tried to visit him that we had to drop things off for him (because we could not see him the first few days without him getting really upset) that were not given to him or put up in his room like his shower curtain. Then we found out that after leaving him be for a few days so that he could get adjusted to the place and get familiar with the people. They were not making sure that he was taking care of himself like showering. My aunt went by to see him and he had not showered in days and was wearing the same clothes that he was wearing when we dropped him off, which was nine days later. So no, I was not very happy with their treatment of my dad, the quality of care that he got or the compassion that they showed.

Vitality Living Spring Hill

We found that while a handful of the staff were very caring and diligent about patient care there were times when my father-in-law was left soiled and his bedding soiled. This unfortunately happened more than once. The staff generally seemed overworked and stressed out. Unfortunately, my father-in-law actually fell while there and broke his hip. While this happened under their watch, the management kept calling us and pestering about moving his room and our plans going forward, hoping to get us out in order to fill the bed. Sadly, my father-in-law did pass away after the hip fracture and only one of the staff members Gave any condolence.
