Would like to see things done better with people with dementia and memory loss

The care sevices is lacking. They need more staff, and it would be great if they get more help. [name removed] is wonderful, who is one of the caretakers, who goes above and beyond. They take good care of the residents. Some of the staff works really hard, and some don't. The food has been very bad, and the prices are expensive. The desserts is really good. My loved one loves the activities. I am not too happy about the value for the money.

Overcharging, No Care

I would not recommend the community to others for their loved ones. You pay for a specific care level such as transfers and getting to meals for your loved one and the community is providing these care services as promised. There is zero communication from the community side to the family, and they are not responding to any of our questions or concerns that we have. The laundry care twice a week costs extra and the community still isn't providing this service for our loved one. Since the community isn't doing this, the family is doing the laundry to make sure our loved one has clean clothes.

Better organization and need to be more upfront

Initially it was an awesome experience in terms of how they tried to make us feel at ease and it seemed like it was going great. Once we signed the paperwork I felt like they just completely flipped things around and I was not happy. There were many things that they did not explain to us up front that were major surprises to us. When we got to her unit, they did not clean it prior to us her moving in. They did end up cleaning the apartment and admitted to the mistake and gave us some money off of the first months rent so that was great. I understand that the executive director is very busy, but I think she needs to be more accommodating to the newer residents to help them feel more at ease. We are hoping there will be some improvements in the future.

Firstly the food is good, but the way it's setup makes it costly. Out of the rent you pay, a certain amount is allocated for your meal plan. However, the meals are expensively priced. That amount they give you won't last you the entire month, so you'll have to end up cooking or eating very little. Overall I would advise others to not go there, they pretty much scammed me as far as I'm concerned. I liked it and I decided I did want to live there because there's a pool and I liked everything else. I'm able to cook and I didn't like that there wasn't an oven, but I could make do. I kept telling them that I can't rent anywhere until I sell my home. I was adamant about that, I don't know how many times I mentioned that. I also hadn't even put my house on the market yet, so I needed to get it ready to sell. I am handicapped and my mobility is limited and slowed down. I signed an agreement and I thought there was an understanding that I DID want to rent there IF the room I liked the most became available. I also thought that everything was SUBJECTED TO the sale of my home, but it was not and I had to start paying rent in December. Because of that I've lost about [price removed]. Which is a lot of money for someone with limited funds. My living expenses in addition to what I was used to making have become costly, I have unfortunately went through all of my IRA on top of having to pay almost [price removed] for basically nothing. I feel scammed. I would have not signed it or I would've made sure the words "subjected to" were in the agreement. It was done in such a way that I had no idea that I was signing an actual lease to start renting in December. I thought it was an agreement that I would lease the apartment if and only if my home was sold when the apartment became available. It was the week of Thanksgiving when I saw the place and I had to pay rent the following month, although I never moved in. If what happened to me didn't happen - I would've loved it because it was close to where I used to live and I was familiar with the area. It was the perfect place. There were so many things they would've taken care of that a lot of places charge you extra for. Even though the food plan was a little expensive, I really liked Aspire at West End and I'm sorry to say I genuinely feel like I was scammed.

Our Respite Experience

My loved one was there for respite care last Fall, and it seemed to be fine. We had a couple of little minor issues, which I suppose is to be expected when you're there as guest rather than a full-time resident. I know they've changed management since my loved one was there. But the rest of the administrative staff was great, including the admissions person, who was fantastic getting everything set up. Once my loved one was in, there were times when she needed assistance and had to wait a really long time, or they just never came so she just took care of it herself. When I addressed it with them, they mentioned Covid lockdowns and staffing shortages.

Activities and leadership with communication could be improved

They could improve on the activities, they have very few of them and do not really engage with the residents. Value is subpar for what we are paying and the care our loved one is receiving, we do know the staff members are understaffed. Even though the executive director is very nice, she could communicate a little more frequently.

The Gardens of Germantown

The value for cost and the care services were not that good, we were told it would be a certain rate per day but it was more like a certain rate for 24hr. For example, if we moved our loved one in at 11:30PM we would still have to pay the full days rate even though she was not moved in until 11:30PM. Also the living conditions were not appropriate, our loved one did not have a comfortable bed - it was just a spring cot she was sleeping on

Depends what is important to you

We chose Atria at the time because of the location, it is very close to my house. It was also at the time a pretty good deal for the size of the unit we were able to get. All the staff are great, but they do not have enough staff members which is affecting the care and the food service. The individual building that they have, residents are not able to get in and out of. They have to ring a doorbell and wait for someone to come open the door which has been very frustrating.

Reasonable but average

We chose Brookdale Arlington because the location was good for our family and they seemed very attentive in their presentation to us and the price was reasonable. We were pleasantly surprised with his room size, it was very nice. He was only here about 4 months, he went in walking and once he came out he no longer could walk.
