While Clare Bridge bills itself as Memory and Dementia Care, they are not trained handle behaviors associated with later stage Alzheimer's. Staff is caring but not able to deal with aggression or lack of cooperation even though they will say it is "normal" to see this kind of behavior. Even after medications were adjusted in a geriatric psych unit, they would not take my husband back and I was left scrambling to find acceptable accommodations.

I was very appreciative they gave my mom one month's respite care right after her diagnosis of dementia, but they lacked communication the entire time, it was hard to get ahold of a nurse or any admin staff. My mom never saw a doctor or nurse practitioner while there.

Review for Belvedere Commons of Seneca

They stay on their phones and sit at the med cart talking. There are a few staff that are good but they are short staffed. My husband has been soaking wet every time I came and I came every day. I reported these things to the director and nothing was done.

Room for improvement

There is no overnight nurse. All meds are given at meals. No provision for meds before or after 7a-7pm. Never checked her vital signs even for BP meds. Staff changes frequently. When they say that their medication is included they only mean they will obtain it and hand it to her. You still pay for it.

Understaffed

The facility is clean and reasonably well maintained. Reflections is understaffed and administrative oversight is sorely lacking. Often, at night, there is only one person on duty for over 30 residents.

Under new management

Brookdale has a new manager - this seems to be a big improvement. Brookdale Hermitage is also to start new ownership in 2024. Unfortunately my experience with Brookdale is while they were in trouble. The cook left abruptly - one night the management finally ordered pizzas because there was no one to cook dinner. Housekeeping and nursing staff were pulled to cook. Staff was going through great turnover and often short staffed. Staff suddenly taking vacation and not returning. No one to transport or drive bus for doctor appointments. This was at the same time that my mother's health was declining. Also great inconsistencies in medication administration, mother not kept clean, room often smelled of urine, mother developed a bed sore. I brought in Hospice who informed me they had no nursing assistants. A couple of Brookdale nurses and one nursing assistant were able to help me when they were on duty . They are under new management and I believe they are getting their act together.

A Huge Disappointment

We placed my mom at Brookdale in April of 2022. All went well until the Executive Director and RN both quit in July of that year. From that point forward there were numerous problems: frequent "interim" management filling in; and the RN wasn't filled until January of 2023. My mom's room was often very dirty, her dietary guidelines (diabetic) and certain meds were not being followed consistently, extremely poor communication due to the high turnover in management, missing laundry and linens for which reimbursement was never made to us despite being promised. In April 2023 We ultimately moved my mom to another memory care facility 15 minutes away, and she is now doing great and happier with much better care and cleanliness. I'd give Brookdale a one star rating except for the Activity Director, who was very good at her job. Thus the 2-star rating.

The community seemed very old school nursing home. There were dark hallways, no real outside area. We didn't see very many staff on the tour. We didn't get to see the rooms. The dining room seemed max capacity of people. Overall it felt a little disorganized.

Brookdale Fort Myers review

We do think Brookdale Fort Myers is a very nice facility, but overall we have had a very disappointing experience. We feel there are some hygiene issues that are not being taken care of, our loved ones room is not always kept clean. We wanted a place that has activities and while this community does they do nothing to help get our loved one engaged or any type of encouragement. We feel that when we bring up questions or concerns to the staff and management they listen and say it will get done but never does, so there is no real follow through.

Our tour experience with Grand Villa was horrible. We visited on a weekend, which was when we had time go as we work during the week. They didn't have a qualified person to talk to us or show us around, and their rating system of how they decide what they will charge was so incomprehensible that we left having no idea what it would cost. We just didn't have a good feeling and it may have been different if they had a qualified person there, but they did not.

It may be good for others - but it wasn't good for us

It wasn't a good experience for us. It felt like they wanted us in and they did everything they could to get us in fast, but they didn't make sure it was the right fit. We spent a lot of money on moving her in and getting her things in there, but I don't think they did anything to help keep her there. There should have been more time spent to make sure it's a good fit. They called me all the time to tell me about the things my mom did, almost like she was a bad child, but they are a memory care facility and she has dementia. Her behavior and the things she was doing were on par with having dementia. One lady called me and said, "She's up my butt all the time" - and those were her exact words. I explained that she's nervous; she follows people around because this is new for her. I don't think I should have to explain to a memory care facility how to handle someone with dementia. It may be a good fit for other people, but I feel that they want them drugged up and sitting there.

An Unavoidable Mistake in Selection

I would not recommend Belvedere Commons of Franklin to others for their loved ones. They didn't have enough staff. In fact, there were times I couldn't find a staff member to answer a question, especially in the memory care unit. It was very difficult to have a conversation via phone or email, it was a little better if the conversation was done in person. The number I would call would ring into the assisted living area, and then a staff member from assisted living, would have to leave and go to the memory care unit in another building to find the answer out for me. My loved one was able to leave the community after being moved to the memory care due to construction workers leaving a door open. There was another staff member that caught my loved one and was able to get my loved one back in to the community, and called me to inform me of this. I overall was very displeased with the experience. The community always had an unpleasant smell to it. The bathroom in my loved one's room was never really clean and the toilet wouldn't flush. Some of the caregivers I couldn't understand very well due to a heavy accent. The only way I would recommend the community is for the assisted living portion and if your loved one was able to assist with their own care.
