So sorry I picked this place. Having been at other rehabs recently, I can say the care here is awful. I have waited each time for up to 10 minutes for the call bell to be answered when I can clearly hear the aids laughing and joking around in the hallway. My body is in so much pain right now, and do not want to give away to much info as I know my care will go even further down. Going on third day here and have done nothing but eat in my room, watch tv and constantly cry. The care at the other place was completely different and I so wish I had asked to go back, this was just so much closer to home for my husband to come. You are all here to do a job, please take care of the patients, the verbal calls for help are very sad to hear . Wish I knew who to talk to that would help without me getting worse service for writing this

Please do not send your loved one here. My mother reeked of urine every time we visited. Her room reeked of urine, even when she wasn't in the room. They promised that there would never be a time they couldn't provide the care she needed. They laughed at us when we asked if there would be a time when we might be required to provide private outide aids, saying they have never heard of such a thing. Of couse she ended up with recurring uti, and of course a bedsore. We confronted them about this, requesting they provide the services they promised. Then they sent a certified letter saying they were kicking her out in 30 days, and they would drop her off at our door. We applied to 10 other nursing homes in Delaware county, told them the care she required, all of them were interested in having her move in until they got the nursing report from Sunrise. 10 nursing homes denied her. 10 out of 10 denied after Sunrise contacted them .

My friend lived here for about 9 months. She needs assisted living help. She was promised the world when she moved in. Most of those promises were not kept, such as making the kitchen sink handicapped accessible. She had a stroke and needs to be helped to get out of bed, dressed, and helped into her motorized wheelchair each morning. Often the aides would forget to get her up, and she would have to buzz them. She often missed breakfast because they were late. One day, she dropped her call button, and she couldn't reach the emergency call chain because her bed was in the wrong place. Because of her stroke, she can't speak very loudly, so she couldn't yell loudly enough for anyone to hear. She couldn't reach her phone. She had to just lie in bed until someone came. Nobody came until 3:00 pm! She had had no trip to the bathroom, no medicines, no food, no water. She would often wait over an hour for someone to come after she pressed the call button. This made trips to the bathroom very difficult. She also paid extra to get a bath three times a week, and had to constantly fight to be able to get them. They would constantly forget, or be too busy to give her a bath. Evidently they are understaffed, and the staff is underpaid. Turnover was very high. The only efficient people were in the billing department. They happily billed her for all the services she didn't get, and some she didn't even want. Overall, it looks like a fabulous place to live if you don't need help. The place is clean and bright and friendly. But if you need help now or in the future, think twice! She had a happy ending to her story: she found a place at Westminster Canterbury. They are taking excellent care of her.

Overpriced for services received. To all those looking for Assisted Living there are a variety of options to choose from on Long Island. Places so much nicer.

Dont be fooled by their sales team because that's all they are "sales" they dont care about your loved ones. They made this place sound amazing fully staffed, people always there to help. It's all crap . We moved my grandmother in there and we are so disappointed. She waits over 30min for help to use the bathroom. They have a very high turnover rate . Another lie we were told. They say they will do everything to care for your lives ones when all they really are doing is robbing people! Over 10 grand a month! Its heartbreaking. Please don't make the mistake we did and dont listen to the lying sale's team

I rarely weigh in on public forums such as this, but have been so incredibly frustrated with the care provided to my parent at BG Columbia, I decided to add my impressions to the mix. I recognize many of the writers of reviews posted and frankly, rarely see them visiting their loved ones, at least during the day. Perhaps they are only able to visit in the evening, but if that’s the case, I would strongly suggest visiting during the day so you get a better picture of the day to day routine. While there are some kind, caring staff, for most, this is just a job. This is especially true of managers, all of them. I don’t see any effort on their part to create an environment they would want for their own family members. Shameful. I have found bruises on my parent that no one seemed to notice or report, have had to ask repeatedly for showers and hair to be washed, not to mention toileting. Don’t expect them to accommodate your family member’s needs. The corporate line reigns supreme at BG Columbia. Someone once told me that most people who place parents in assisted living are just looking to warehouse them. Apparently that’s the sad case for many, but my parent deserves better.

If I could give this place 0 stars I would. I wouldn't put even put my dog in that place after the care they gave my grandmother. First, everyone that works there is just there to get a pay check they do not care about the residents. When they don't want to care for them the hospital even when nothing is wrong. DO NOT ever give them permission to take the rent out of your checking account. The women [name removed] took 3 months rent out over $6,000 on so called mistake. Don't get me started on the women [name removed] at the front desk she is nothing but a noisy [language removed]. I have seen her make faces at the residents after they walk away. The women that runs the place only caters to the people that have money and lives in the villa or has double rooms. If you care about your loved one you have been warned.

Complaints of insensitivity and "money only interests" are common among families and residents...My own observation on visits to two close family friends reveal the same. This atmosphere is concerning to families and to those who care about them. Asking for the level of cost paid for should not be part of a quality of care evaluation. It reinforces residents and their families ideas that quality of care is connected to cost of care. Covering up serious lapses in care have also been described.

Toured for my mother. Very expensive and over priced compared to the other Assisted Living's that we looked at. Saw aides serving in the dining room. Was a huge turn off. Met briefly with the Executive Director who was very disengaged and distracted. She did not seem genuine. The sales woman was extremely nice and informative. We will be looking somewhere else that is more affordable with a more engaged Director.

Sunrise is not what it was. My mother callls me daily to complain about the careless attitude of their new Administrator. Needless to say, she will not be living there much longer, once we find alternative placement. My mother states Admin neglects to engage with the residents, something the old admin always did. She can’t even say a quick hello! She said the staff morale has declined and that she feels for the leadership team that has been there for years and works so hard to make sure the residents are well cared for. My advice is that it is not what it was and unless someone at Sunrise who is in charge of the decision making helps to make it what it used to be, then there are other Sunrise Assisted Living’s close by to look into. Avoid this place until someone in upper management cleans it up and opens their eyes to what is going on. -H.C.

Never trust these people. They will ignore your loved ones and let them suffer. They care only about the money. Stay far away from this place.

My two family members are in the process of being kicked out of Sunrise after being misled for 2 years about how the relationship would go in the future. One is 85 years old and dying of Parkinson's disease, the other is 77 years old with a heart condition. He (77) drove a truck and she was a house cleaner. They had no financial knowledge or business knowledge. They spent their entire life barely above poverty levels but managed to be disciplined and pay off their house a few years ago. Their income level would qualify them for medicaid, as it would have 2 years ago. The 85 year old that's dying of Parkinson's has the medical qualification and would have also been eligible 2 years ago. The problem was that these two people had no understanding of the industry or of contract law and have been [language removed] along the way. In April of 2016, their head of sales, [name removed], and their Executive Director, [name removed], told my family that if they sold their house and paid for 2 years... Full price (over $11,000/mo due to the 85 year old's health)... that they'd be assured a place at Sunrise no matter what income level they had after 2 years. That despite the 85 year old being eligible, pay out of pocket so that you both can stay at Sunrise for the rest of your lives. They then had these two people sign a contract dozens of pages long where it clearly indemnifies them against ALL "previous oral agreements or contracts". The signed contract creates the environment where these people can say whatever they have to in order to get the naive, uneducated, dying elderly folks into their facility. Then, when they run out of money, they deny the whole thing and are now threatening to kicking the 77 year old out onto the street and will immediately move the 85 year old into a medicaid facility, not nearly as nice as Sunrise facility. They have taken almost $275,000 of my families money and are now going to force a 77 year old to leave his dying wife, apply for section 8 housing, and live the rest of his life in a government subsidized, high crime, cold, dirty apartment complex. In hindsight, the "experts" at Sunrise should have properly guided my family, informing them that the 85 year old was eligible for benefits at a medicaid facility. She is so sick that the quality of life that Sunrise affords versus a less quality facility would not be of great value to her. With no assets except the house, the 77 year old never HAD TO sell his house as he is fully independent. He did it because he was told too in order to liquidate an asset to pay for his wife's care. An asset that is excluded from needing to be liquidated for her to gain medicaid status. I began inquiring about the 2 year hurdle almost a year ago. At the time, the family still had about $140,000 left... money that they could have used to buy a place if they knew Sunrise intended to kick them out... Still a travesty considering they owned their house outright but it would have given him a chance. They deliberately did not talk to me for months until recently informing me they would not honor their word and were exempt from any liability because the contract specifically exempts them. I have found almost a dozen more people who have had a similar experience at Sunrise. Ironically, part of the pitch was that "Sunrise was started because the founder's family saw first hand what happens with elder care and wanted to provide a great alternative to help senior citizens". Yet they have defrauded my family and stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from people who had benefits and other options that would not have cost them anything. I would NEVER recommend this place and I hope that they see the harm they've caused when people are literally going to die cold and hungry because of this behavior. Don't buy the warm fuzzy feeling when you walk in and see a fire in the fireplace and cookies on the counter. It's all a facade to steal your money.

Fair warning. Take pictures before and after leaving. Property Manager is going to fudge numbers to pay for things that you should not be entitled to pay and will be shady when you dispute and not provide any requested documentation to back up charges. Quiet area, but you will be charged for things you should not be responsible for. Older units, but it serves it's purpose.

Brighton is poorly managed. New management are bullies, very unprofessional. Health Aids are wonderful but underpaid. Also keep residents over medicated. Staff always busy and can not be bothered. Place is dirty with ants crawling everywhere. After coming here for the past six years I would recommend to look else where.

The Director at this facility is a cold-hearted, uncaring, rude, condescending, obnoxious and lying individual. My mom was a resident at this facility, and she was recently moved to another facility, thank God, where the staff is loving, compassionate and caring. Stay away from this facility.

staff working great but Lead care manager don't have a positive attitude they need more personal. When administration give the tour is look amazing place, is not real. During the tour I can see chair wet of the urine, the bathroom with the poor hygiene diaper dirty in the floor. in memory care people yelling screaming.

While it is a very beautiful, and clean Retirement Home, and staff were friendly, it is understaffed. Same employees that bath/dress, and help seniors, also prepare for meals leaving them short handed at meal times. My father had more than 3 falls in a matter of weeks. We were told that he was sore as he pulled a muscle, and had been examined by the nurse. After several days of dads pain increasing we took him to hospital via private ambulance. The pulled muscle we were told he had turned out to be cracked ribs, and torn rotor cuff at the shoulder. Dad was being moved around, and pulled on the side of his injury for several days... DO NOT RECOMMEND for seniors that cannot take care of their own needs. Dad in a better place now that has the staff to meet his needs. He has had no falls or injury since leaving Sunrise.

Brighton Garden's best is just adequate, but their approach to dementia care is completely inadequate. Be concerned when your loved one is placed on their "memory care" (Reminiscence) unit. Behind locked doors, these residents are the forgotten ones. The corporate website touts a "resident centered dementia care approach." They further state "backed by the latest research, our staff designs programs with stimulating personalized multi-sensory experiences." While this sounds good, the reality at Brighton Gardens of Columbia comes nowhere near these accolades. The activities scheduled by their activities director are most certainly NOT backed by research. Activities are those of decades past-on the Assisted Living side, you'll find Bingo, occasional entertainment, Bingo, trips to the dollar store and area restaurants, Bingo....you get the idea. No creativity, no time spent in planning. On the Reminiscence unit, the calendar is full of inappropriate activities for the population: Coupon Clippers Club (most residents are unable to use scissors); Church Hymns (for the Jewish residents?); Bingo of course, but only 2-3 residents can play. In my time there, multiple activities staff quit, stating that their concerns were not being addressed. Despite their requests for more appropriate materials, including the technology that would allow for actual multi-sensory activities, the Activities Director continues to provide none of these. Brain games make an appearance on the activities calendar, but staff say they have neither the training nor the materials needed, so engagement doesn't happen. There is only so much they can do with construction paper and colored pencils.* While I made my concerns known, I got nowhere. Nothing changed. As a licensed health care professional, I feel this company is far behind the times where dementia programming is concerned. It was upsetting and disturbing to be on the Reminiscence unit, observing residents sleeping on sofas or in their wheelchairs, nothing meaningful or engaging happening. Corporate visited several times during such episodes, yet nothing changed. The quality of the residents' lives should be of paramount importance, but I saw no evidence of this. Furnishings are old and drab, carpeting worn. I was told that they don't own the building and can't change anything. My request to provide materials to engage residents, a one time purchase of a few hundred dollars, was met with "not in the budget." With most residents paying 7-8K per month, a few hundred isn't in the budget? Direct care staff is overworked and underpaid. In addition to caring for your loved one, they are responsible for serving all meals, feeding residents who need help, cleaning the entire kitchen (including loading and unloading the dishwasher) and dining room, setting tables, folding napkins, bringing the garbage out to the dumpster on the opposite side of the building, etc.-3 times/day, while your loved one waits to be toileted. Corporate acknowledged that actual dining room staff was needed, and they would not allow patient care to suffer. Months later, nothing has changed. Apparently this is also not in the budget. They are quick to raise their prices though. Brighton Gardens even takes a cut from the beauty shop, a cost which is then passed on to families. Consider very carefully whether Brighton Gardens can meet your expectations. They've come nowhere close to mine, based on their assurances prior to signing the contract. As they recently said to me, "If you're not happy, why do you stay?" Guess I thought you were doing something to fix the problems. Apparently not."
