Sunrise Senior Living

Pretty place, good food, pleasant staff and some very good caregiviers. However, still waiting for March 2020's refund. My beloved mother-in-law passed away at about 5:30 AM on February 25, 2020. Our check for March's asssited living costs was responsibly mailed mid February and we continue to experience a lack of response on multiple levels from Sunrise administration in Wayne, NJ as well as an office in Virginia. Our family is not only due a refund but a professional response to our calls.

I don't understand why their license was restored. A beloved grandparent passed away at this location a few years before the big lawsuit against quadrangle for abuses against a dementia patient. My Grandparent was fine in their two bedroom apartment at quadrangle. When they were moved to skilled nursing an dback and forth between bryn mawr hospital, they started to complain that people were treating them horribly. I was assured by all staff that my grandparent was simply confused. But after seeing the lawsuit against them by the [name removed], I will always wonder what really happened. Reading all these recent reviews turns my stomach. I myself will never ever trust any nursing homes after seeing that even the most prestigious of nursing homes is nothing but a for profit joke.

My mother has been living at Brighton Gardens for 5 years. Initially she lived in assisted living and then was transferred to the dementia unit for last 18 months. There is high turnover of unit managers as well as care team staff. There were a few managers and caretakers who seemed to genuinely care, but more who were callous and abrupt. The rotten apples ruined the positive influence of the caring team members. I would have moved her out, but another family member felt that a move would have a more negative effect than leaving her there. I do not recommend Brighton Gardens for your loved one.

NO Stars! I would like to give no stars to this terrible place. My mother , who is 93, was here for rehab. She has a throat condition and needs ice water throughout the day. When she would ring the buzzer for water it would literately take hours before someone brought water. She also needs to drink from a straw or she may choke. They often said they did not have straws...REALLY? What type of facility says such nonsense? At times they would even say they had no cups or ice? I think they were trying to limit her water so they would not be bothered to assist her to the bathroom! Because often she would ring for assistance to the bathroom and that would take an hour or more for someone to come. Totally unacceptable. Would you like to hold it that long? She is also diabetic , yet she NEVER received the meal she selected and most times it was not approved for diabetics. NO ONE CARES IN THIS PLACE ! Even after we complained in person, nothing changed. The is no concern or consideration for the elderly. DO NOT send your beloved family members to this horrible place!

Look for recent reviews--The Colonnades has more problems every day. Routine loss of electricity, heat and hot water. A plumbing disaster closed their kitchen. Food comes from a temporary kitchen. No table service in the dining room--buffet line only. Worst of all--they are chronically understaffed. Despite job fairs they are unable to hire and keep staff, from service staff to nurses to administrators. Those who remain are unpleasant to deal with. Currently spending on a big dining room addition while these problems remain. There are newer, better options in Charlottesville. Look around!

Two days after moving my mom in, we received a call that she tried to leave the secure area and we would have to arrange for separate care in the form of an aid that would cost over $5,000 a month (in addition to the almost $10,000 they charged to provide a “safe and secure place”). This is a very common symptom of a memory care resident and not once during the interview process did they say this would be needed. In fact, when I explained my mom would likely do this behavior, I was told all about their secure facility and alarms on the doors, etc. They were happy to take her $5,700 one time (non refundable) move in fee, but are unable to staff the facility properly to provide the basic care a memory facility is expected to provide. Rather than hire one hourly wage employee to monitor the door, they require multiple residents to pay thousands of dollars a month to ensure they don’t leave? They sent me an eviction notice after deciding they were too incapable (or lazy) to actually do the job they promised to do when took all her money. So to be clear...THIS IS NOT A MEMORY CARE FACILITY. Management ([names removed]) are disgusting human beings who exist to only take advantage of your vulnerable, elderly loved ones. Stay far away from Sunrise East Setauket.

New management over the past year has resulted in a huge turnover of caregivers. The new caregivers just don't seem to care. They residents are not taken care of and there are no activities in memory care. I had to ask that they brush my family members teeth. They park the residents in front of the tv and caregivers are nowhere to be found. The memory care residents are not always safe due to no one watching them. The cost is very high for the care given. I would NOT recommend this facility to anyone.

Mom was okay at first but within a month or two these folks were pushing hard to move her to the 3rd floor reserved for far gone dementia patients. It was a huge mistake and she ended up in a spiral downturn and was rushed to the ER for 10 days to save her life, before being moved to a rehab facility to learn how to walk again. Fortunately she now lives in a truly good place and has done so very well. I have no doubt whatsoever that she wouldn't still be alive now if she'd stayed at Sunrise. Other families also moved their loved ones out of Sunrise and into Mom's residence facility.

The Independent Living and Assisted Living communities within the Charlottesville Sunrise Community/Colonnades have adequately satisfied the needs of my loved one for over 13 years. BUT, RUN, DO NOT WALK, if your loved one needs memory care services and you are considering the reminiscence community.

I had a family member who was in the memory care unit for Alzheimer's and every time I visited them, I left feeling sad and shocked. While there are a few select staff who genuinely wanting to be there and help the residents, a majority were just plain rude and should not be working with elderly- not nice to residents. The place was also dirty. I do not recommend leaving your family member at this facility, especially for the monthly costs.

My father was treated horribly here. He was being charged for care he wasn’t receiving. He was paying for assistance in showering and dressing and yet i was the one who had to take care of those things. After a fall, he had to spend a month in a rehabilitation unit. Pia and J’mi, who are in charge of the wellness office, told me to continue paying his rent while he was away, which we did. The day before he was to be sent home from the rehab, [name removed], who never went out to access my father as is protocol, and never returned the calls from the rehab to discuss his recovery, called to tell me he would not be allowed back at sunrise. No real reason given. They stated they spoke that morning and thought he was no longer a good fit for their community. After thousands of dollars, which they did not completely refund, he had nowhere to go. All of his belongings and furniture where in an apartment he could no longer go to. They were rude, uncaring, and offered no options or support. They were cold and unsympathetic to the fact that they were kicking an elderly man out of his home with no notice at all, with no valid reason. I’ve never known someone in healthcare who was less concerned with the wellbeing of their patients and their families . The executive director, [name removed], who in the few months my dad lived there, we never actually met, informed me we would receive a refund. However the refund was over $1500 short and he never returned my calls or emails to discuss when we would receive the rest of his money. I have never written a review good or bad for anything, but felt we should share our story. If your loved one is independent, maybe this will work for you. If you need care, as assisted living should offer, I would start looking for more caring, skilled people. Sunrise is only interested in making money.

I am actually giving Zero/No stars! You actually are showing pictures like this is a five star hotel?. Are you kidding me—are you serious or haven’t you been in the place for years on end?!! Most residents don’t bring in brand new furniture in their rooms & they certainly don’t come prefurnished!; the dining area and bathrooms have never looked like this in the entire time my mom was here. It is run by a manager who is nothing more than a glorified salesman and a supervisor who also doesn’t have one ounce of compassion and def doesn’t look out for the resident’s best interests! I wouldn’t put my dog here. As a matter of fact I am traumatized by what I saw my mom go through here and I was on top of everything constantly after I saw how she was being treated. If your loved one is in control of going to the bathroom when they get there it certainly won’t be long before they lose that as well. Not enough staff to care for each resident! Personally there are some great staff members who work very hard and don’t get paid nearly enough money and there are the ones who ignore the residents requests and end up stealing from the ones who don’t know any better. I can go on forever but for now I’ll stop. I’m getting physically ill just thinking about it again. Bring in an aide to your home & save yourself t heartache! This parent is deceased.

Bedford Court needs to be investigated This place is not meant for anyone Everyone employee is on the phone while working, the mangers are looking the other way, things are not getting done.

Such a terrible experience for our loved one, and our family. When you go in they paint a perfect picture far from the truth.

The worst care center I have ever seen. Turn over is insane. Care of our loved one, is terrible. Room is flithy, patient clothing is filthy, room smells, complaints are ignored, lack of follow up, poor patient safety, horrible food, AND insane costs!

I had made an appointment last week to view one bedroom apartments for my 96 year old father, We were very specific in our request for only one bedrooms and and absolutely not a studio. [Name removed] had told us that there were in fact two one bedroom to be viewed. We confirmed with her on Friday On Saturday I brought my 96 year old father from Manhattan to view the apartments with the intention of choosing on and signing the contract. [Name removed], all excited to see us shows us the one and only one apartment available,: a tiny studio. She then admitted that she has LIED to us to try and “sell” Us the studio . We had made this long trip with my father all for nothing. My father turned to [name removed] and said How could I ever trust you with anything At all costs STAY AWAY from these con artists Go to [community removed], wonderful new establishment with honest wonderful staff. Sunrise should be ashamed to treat elderly people with such indifference and disrespect. Nightmare Experience

My father was a resident for 8 months before he passed away. I would not recommend this facility at all. We had several bad experiences one was he pulled the emergency cord in the public bathroom on the main floor because he needed assistance after breakfast no one came so he reset it again and pulled it once again still nobody came (so by now 15 minutes passed) so he reset it and pulled it again still nobody came so by now its 30 minutes past the first time he pulled it, so he decided to walk out into the hallway with no pants and finally he was assisted. This bathroom is in the main hallway right by the receptionist and just off the dinning room. Another time he wasnt feeling well (I had the stomach flu so I could not go check on him) we called the nurse in charge to check on him. Her response was in a little while. I called him 1hour later to see if they had been in he said no. So I called my sister she called they said after lunch (which was in about 1 hour) so i called him in 1 hour no one still had not gone in, called my sister she went to check on him questioned the nurse why no one had been in to check him she had no answer. I requested they call me after they check him its now 430pm. This all started at 8am. The nurse said his vitals were fine,I stated you do realize he has terminal cancer his response laughing. "no but I do now". I would not even consider this Place. The charge nurse [name removed] is more concerned about her puppy she brings to work than the residence. Oh becareful where you step the house dog has accidents because no one lets her out when she barks at the door

Our mother barely survived her time at Sunrise and fortunately was taken to the ER in time to be saved, barely, from neglect, dehydration and severe over medication. (8 times the prescribed amount, which had her heart rate in the 30's with her not being able to even walk) Their charge nurse is the worst imaginable and tried to take my mother's purse...right in front of me. Our experience was awful, just plain awful, on so many levels. At first it seemed like a lovely place, with great activities (best part of the facility) and decent care. It quickly went downhill and we found ourselves in a life or death situation. The doctor told us NOT to take her back to Sunrise...wow...said a lot. Now that we've experienced a year with an excellent facility, I can't even begin to compare the two. Heard the Director left and that they didn't have anyone in charge...scary.

my mother lives there, had all of her jewerly stolen and the gm has done nothing to investigate the theft. beyond disappointing...
