Their memory unit was awful. Understaffed. Red cords didn't work in room. Staff refused to clean shared bathroom after someone pooped all over. Staff didn't treat patients with courtesy or respect. Plates of food were slung on the tables in front of the patients. Very few activities. My husband fell twice in 2 weeks breaking 3 ribs and his nose on the 2nd fall. I knew after lunch his first day there that this was not the place for him. It looks nice on the outside, but the staff and caregiving was horrible.

Do not be deceived by the looks. I agree for most part clean. Care in rehabilitation skilled nursing section was awful. Delay on call light response, delay in care, lack of following doctor orders, and lack of following patient rights.

Probably one of the biggest mistakes I made. I was trying to decide between this facility and another one. I read some of the reviews (the same way you are about to read mine) and I thought Ok it checked all the boxes. From the moment I walked in, I got a good vibe with the Director of Admissions. He was personable and welcoming. A lot of things were promised and said. My mom was just getting out of the hospital and the first few weeks went as expected. By the third week, everything started to change. As my mom was starting to recover, the care was no longer there. They were not listening to her needs or my concerns. They kept saying next week or next time. Without dragging this review, this was the most appalling place and the biggest mistake I made. Do not be fooled by the initial smiles. Pay attention to every detail. Understand, they are there to sell a very expensive service. Walk around the facilities and look at the ceiling, you might detect some stains. urine smell, etc.

I would not recommend this place. I wish I had never moved here. The staff is only here for payday. They're not here because they like older people. Her shuttle has not worked in two weeks and a lot of the people depend on that shuttle to take them to their doctors appointments -this is unacceptable. My toilet has not worked in a week and a half and that's not acceptable. Either the food is cold. The coffee is so cold. The service sucks! Management needs to be replaced by someone who cares about older people. This could be a wonderful place to live. what we need are some management people who like older people and care about them. I've only been here a little less than two months and I wish I had never ever moved here. Very discouraging! I wish I could afford to move.

We enjoyed the facility at first, but with only 2 hours notice we were told that my mother had to move to memory care (which was a large difference in price). They told me that because she was exit seeking she had to move immediately, that morning, while she was at a doctor's appointment. I let them know they did not notify me before this would/could be imminent, but of course had no proof this had not been discussed. They moved her to a tiny, smelly, dark room with a hole in the wall in memory care and it was such a change from the assisted living that we had to take most of her furniture back to our house. She thought she was in jail while we searched for a memory care room elsewhere - closer and less expensive. To make matters worse, we were told all of her items would be moved by the afternoon, and when I got there after 3pm she was standing in the lobby having urinated on herself and only the bed and dresser were moved. I had to move everything else MYSELF (5 feet tall female) as the workers stood around and watched me. When we found a place the next week, they charged us for not having a two week notice even though we received no notice ourselves. Memory care was gross, assisted living was nice. The staff lost friendliness as the staff overturned Quality of care was poor. I witnessed one aide in memory care putting a resident in a chair with a table in front of her so she couldn't move. I tried to move the table and she told me the resident had been bad, not to move it. Administrative staff - not helpful at all. Food was good - dining room was nice Activities - good activities for assisted living. Value for the money - great for assisted living (if you can last there before they throw you in memory care), horrible value for memory care - dark, small, smelly rooms that are not maintained. They are unsympathetic and unfair in their policies (see above). I later found out that they WERE supposed to move 100% of the furniture and furnishings when the resident moves in-house.

Poor accounting system. Bookeeper can't explain billing. Poor customer service. Calls not returned from both Accounting and Executive staff. Have been waiting on my $[removed]+ refund for months. Avoid this facility at all costs.

I would not recommend Brighton Gardens at all!!! I feel sorry for the residents that live there who don't have an advocate for them. Longevity of staff. They had a tremendous turnover of staff from management all the way down to the care staff. They lie about response times on call bells. Constantly running out of food items in the dining room

They would need new administrative staff; all positions! Families need to know that everything is decided from top down. Bad managers guarantee problematic staff, food, housekeeping, billing, etc. I cannot/ would not recommend this particular facility for anyone. Do NOT recommend this place. They do not vacuum/clean rooms; change bed linens; shower resident, etc.

Sunrise does not even deserve a star. This is a corporate ran facility. They have staff that is not trained besides being under staffed to the number of residents. My mother had experienced being slapped across the face, not bathed, left unattended, to an activity employee tell us my mom was resting when she had passed. She wore other residents clothes and her pillows kept going missing I replaced up to 6 pillows. They don't clean the rooms. The list goes on and on. If you want to know more reach out I can give you a book. I am not hiding behind a fake name. Should your parent need assisted living DON'T GO HERE!!! You will be sorry.

My mother lived here for 3 years, and I should have moved her sooner had I known the living conditions and price. $[fee removed] monthly including $[fee removed] a pop just to deliver her medicine to her 2X daily, food was below average, her care staff was unprofessional and didn't tend well to problems occurring on her floor such as theft. Mother had many things stolen out of her room, w/ the occasional body sleeping in her bed while she was out of the room. Residence were not watched adequately, and towards the end of her residence she started complaining of feeling ill. We decided to move her out and once her items were out we noticed large areas of mold underneath her sink, a window that did not open or shut without strain, a large nail sticking out of her shower, and multiple areas of maintenance issues. Worse yet they are trying to charge us an additional month after move out and are still sending us invoices, refusing to acknowledge any of our complaints. This is a greedy money pit!! Stay away!!

They never bother returning your calls. The director is incredibly patronizing and rude. The food is always cold, and understaffed. The lack of communication is awful at this place. If you want to charge ridiculous prices at least make sure the services of an elderly loved one is looked after.

They are unable to handle patients who need high levels of care. My father had daily falls at this facility. The RCAs took a long time to answer bells and were rude. We transferred him to a different facility after being there for a little more than a month. There was no follow through with any care plans I would not recommend them to anyone.

Please do not let your loved one go to Brighton. They will not get the care and services that they need and deserve AND that you’re paying for. The administration is so detached from the reality of just how overworked and (a word that admin and corporate has charts and graphs to tell me it just isn’t true!) UNDERSTAFFED. We moved my mom and dad into Brighton 12yrs ago. It was a lovely community then. We saw admin interacting all the time in the community. The dining room was run with a staff that was able to serve everyone with respect and dignity. My father passed 7yrs ago and my mom stayed on because it was home. In the last few years, that home has been ruined. I’m really not sure how corporate can hear the number of complaints that I KNOW they have received (not just from me) and still not change a thing. It was horrible. She passed away I think from a stroke 3 days after she moved in. I'm guessing that she didn't get her blood pressure meds. I am a physician, so I think I have some insight into their care. They were very kind to her, but, I think we're very understaffed. Maybe that was an issue related to COVID, and perhaps was pretty universal. But I would still be wary. considered suing Sunrise, but have not pursued it. It took all this time (2 1/2 years) just to get through settling her estate. But I would STRONGLY recommend not referring any of your clients there!! They were oddly very resistant to letting my mom take her own medications, even though she had been reliably doing it at home for many years. I'm pretty sure that's how her meds got missed. The night before she died, she called for help to get to the bathroom. (She had both arms in slings because she had dislocated both shoulders several weeks earlier). She wet the bed not just once, but twice that night because it took them so long to respond.

Bad experience. My mother passed away from cardiac arrest after aspirating. She had called for help. No nurse at facility during incident. They will not perform any type of first aid or CPR on residents. They will only call 911. They also will not follow up with physicians for orders. Family has to be on top of all of that. They charge extra for care/nursing/medication services but they are not provided.

The facility was clean and well designed. We were assured by the administrative staff that my Mom would be well cared for. That was not the case! I would not recommend that facility.

This company does not care about the residents or their workers. People have worked their for years and they do not listen to their complaints of being overworked due to shortages especially in the healthcare department. Due to being over worked makes the care bad because we are so tired and angry all the time. Many of us are not happy working there and how the residents are second class citizens at the community. Resident complaints are always kept under the rug and those that can't defend themselves are shushed away.

My mom was a resident of Sunrise of Staten Island (Narrows Rd) for five years. She resides on the memory care floor. I recently moved her to another Sunrise out of state where she is thriving. Sunrise of Staten Island: -employees sleeping in living room when he is supposed to be watching the residents. I witnessed this and told the manger and she had to wake him up - during diner employee told resident that she will put her in the quiet room if she doesn’t eat. I was also in the dining room feeding my mom heard employee say this three to four times -when I moved my mom out of state, the night she arrived, the nurse found a bed sore in her bottom. They immediately showed it to me. I was never told she had a bed sore and two more appeared three days later. Why didn’t an employee at sunrise of Staten Island inform the nurses she had a bed sore. They would have immediately seen it when they changed her (mom wears depends). Can write more but no space.Downhill in the last year.

Terrible. Totally money hungry. They do not care about your family. They only care about their bonuses. The director will not even speak to you. Do not be fooled. Quite a bit of turnover in the staff. They promise a care plan but it never happens. The care plan is a proposal for more money.
