This was a very nice looking community, it was clean, and provides all the same good amenities as the other Sunrise communities I looked at. However the staff here did not impress me at all. It was very sterile feeling, no real warmth or compassion, and that really turned me off to this place.

This facility is physically beautiful and kept clean - the issue is in who is running the place. In short, the executive staff at this location does not know how to run a facility that enhances the lives of it's residents. No executive staff/supervisors work after 4:00pm M-F or at all on Saturday or Sunday. They say they do but they don't. So management of the entire facility is left to underpaid caregivers. The caregivers are wonderful people and have overall been very good at caring for our loved one, but they are not management material and they don't get paid to be. There are no activities for people that are high functioning mentally - they really sell you on that in the sales pitch, but it is non-existent when you move in. None of the executive staff ever came to welcome or greet my loved one when they moved in, and there was no orientation for her to adjust to this strange, new environment she is now living in. Residents must basically fend for themselves, especially if they have no family near by.

It's pretty expensive. my mom is what you would call a high functioning dementia patient and I just don't think they're set up for that of caregiving. . They don't really remind people of activities and most activities are passive with limited variety e.g. Card games. If you want more engagement, review them carefully. I believe they are overpriced for the level of care they provide. It's probably ideal if you are very independent with no needed addional services as the location and facility are nice.

My mother lives there. She is very unhappy there but she is unhappy everywhere. She complains a lot of about the staff and the cleanliness and especially the food. She says it inedible. I don't see what she is seeing so it's kind of hard for me to say. The people at Sugar Valley Estates were very friendly when they showed us around too but then things changed after we moved my mother in. My brother personally, has not had good experiences there. We've had a problem with the rent. They took out too much and don't seem to want to correct it. We've had problems with the management, basically.

Assisted living ok, but not great. Staff very friendly.

The staff here was not very friendly and we were not impressed with them at all. We had scheduled an appointment with them and when we arrived they were not prepared for us at all. We ended up waiting for over an hour. We had taken time off of work for this appointment and they just showed no effort.

We were looking for independent living. This was not the right fit for us. The Prices for Rent were very high for SMALL. rooms. The Park in Vernon Hills was our choice.

I saw Sunrise after Brightview and it was quite a disappointment. The facility itself is really small,and everything seems to be crammed into the same spaces.I didn't like the fact that I could enter through the back door and wander around the facility without anyone realizing I was there. Rachel told me that the doors were locked between 8pm and 8am but I was still apprehensive. I did see a couple of the apartments and did not like the idea of what they call a 'kitchenette' being stuck in the entrance to the bathroom. Very unappealing! My last negative thought was that CNA's were being called 'Care Manager Specialists' and would be in charge of a residents specific needs. On a positive note Rachel was fantastic, she is open, honest and pulled no punches. She definitely has a wonderful one on one rapport with the residents and it is clear that she loves what she does.

Not lifecare just interested in caring for person until they run out of money. Nice looking facility.

Studio is really small. One bedroom to expensive.

I did not like this community it was not what we were looking for at the time for our loved one.

Lovely place, adorable community Pup, Jaegar. The staff was courteous and caring to a point. I caution people who need assistance due to immobility because the aides are only supposed to do the minimum: make beds, give showers, and change diapers. That’s it. I never could get anyone to do simple tasks such as hanging up clothing from the laundry. I wound up with piles of clothing on every seat which was to be used for visiting guests. I was being nickel and dimes to death by hidden charges. For example: I asked the maintenance lady if she would please hang an expensive painting on the wall to get it off of the floor. She’d do it for $25.00. Common courtesy was sorely lacking. I finally moved because they didn’t believe I was capable of monitoring my own medications. I may be in a wheelchair but my mind is still sharp. The reason I chose to live at Sunrise was because the marketing director mentioned to me that I would save a big junk of money by monitoring my own meds. Two of their employees, a nurse and the new wellness director, came to do a reassessment when I was scheduled to return “home” from rehab. It came up that I had never been cleared medically and that the monitoring of medication was suggested by the marketing director. I was only able to live there because the issue of medication was approved. I got wind off the medication concerns from the social worker at what is now my new home. I will be pursuing a refund of the $1500.00 I paid because had I known about the medication concerns I NEVER would have chosen to live there because it was out of my price range. I think ethically, which won’t matter to institutions out to make the most money possible, that I’m owed, along with the deposit, the $1000.00 it cost to move me. I don’t know what the expectations are for assisted living B but I urge individuals with mobility issues to be very, very careful to include tasks you can’t do in your decision making process. The Hoyer wasn’t enough to meet my needs. I’m in a new facility, the Villages of Lake Highlands, now which is the polar opposite of Sunrise...within an hour of my arrival, my art pieces were hung. One of the owners did some work on my tv. If asked, I will not be suggesting Sunrise as a caring place to live. My experience was all about profit with no room for kindness and true caring.

I would like to know from [date removed] to which facility she moved her mother to. My mother is on the 3rd floor of Sunrise of Leawood. My mother has experienced rudeness by the staff also and states she does not like how they speak to the residence. My mother was high functioning and within 6 months has declined.

My mom is in the memory care center. She has fallen multiple times, and sometimes the staff is there to help. Sometimes. We had to put a nanny cam in the room to check up on them - and they have been a little better since. The staff are nice people. But their food sucks. Literally. Vegetables so overcooked that you have to use a spoon to get them into your mouth. Well, not my mouth, because after trying their food twice, you couldn't get me to eat that swill willingly. You'd have to be mindless to eat it - which is why they can serve it at a memory care center. One time, I was trying to help my mom eat chicken nuggets, and she took one bite, then spit it out - "old, dried out meat. Yuck!" is how she described it. Spaghetti with canned tomatoes on it for dinner. Maybe people in memory care don't care about any spices? Zuchinni slices that are so over-cooked they slide between the tongs of a fork. My step-father won't eat with my mom unless we bring in outside food. Pathetic! Seems to me that for over $7,000 a month, they ought to be feeding the inmates real food. Really.

My mom was there for about a year and received some good care. Every weekend it was like a ghost town. You couldn't find a caregiver or nurse anywhere. Many times my 90-year-old mother had to fend for herself and often fell. When questioned why she fell, they responded that she should have waited for care to show up. I was there every weekend paying for that care that never showed up and ended up having to be there to take care of her. The guy who ran the place was dope. He had no clue how to interact with people. He had no idea what was going on and didn't care. He was busy flirting with the help and leaving for hours. I used to watch and time him. The place needs a facelift for sure and the food could be much better. They need waiters because everybody was served cold food by the time it got to their tables. I experienced this first hand. Maybe if they paid staff what they deserve and hire the right amount of people, it would work.

Beautiful place, all about profit and not your loved one. Look at other places that will provide care, do your homework, it's a Marriott. If you need little care then it's okay.

Many of the care providers there are warm and caring. The facility is physically nicer than a lot of the older Sunrises. My loved one had been in another Sunrise that had some problems but in retrospect wasn't so bad; Falls Church was much worse. As in all Sunrises, the staff is overworked and spread thin; in this case it was extreme. Some staff members are problematic; I saw one (of the more competent ones) scream at a resident. Another one dropped my parent on the floor and wouldn't pick him up; she pushed him into bed, where he lay all tangled, rather than put him into bed properly. When I brought it to the attention of the management, they did work with this staffer but did not fire her and she did continue to provide care to my parent. Hopefully its gotten better but as of this fall the management was a disaster; many key positions were unfilled. Everything fell on a new nurse, who was good but overwhelmed. They would run out of my parent's pain meds and wouldn't provide meds on time. They would neither follow through on doctor's care orders nor would they allow our own private duty aides to provide that assistance (such as walking hm down the hall for five minutes or transfering him from one chair to another, which they defined as "care"). They leave the residents sitting in the same transfer chair for hours instead of transferring to other chairs. The state-mandated afternoon snack is sometimes simply a glass of root beer, and they cancel afternoon activities when the good activities person isn't available. We didn't file state complaints as we feared retribution against our loved one. We were about to move him to a nursing home when he passed away suddenly. Their attitude toward his death? Some of the sweet caregivers were very affected. The head nurse simply said it was "probably for the best," as if it hadn't been her job to keep him alive. Had they followed through on exercising him and treating him well, or had they allowed our private duties to do so, I really think he would have lived a little longer, and he would have gotten to see his granddaughter (whose arrival the day after he died he'd been looking forward to) one more time.

My family moved my father into the facility on [date removed]. We informed Sunrise that the primary reason for the need for its services was that our father had lost bowel and bladder function in the overnight hours. Despite that notice, and the request that he be checked and kept dry, he was not. We found he and his bed sheets soaked on one occasion. By [date removed] he developed a wide spread rash to his abdomen, scrotum, and anus from not being kept dry. The staff also manhandled him on at least one occasion, causing extensive bruising to his right forearm. We found medication on the floor of his room on one occasion and, when that fact was brought to the attention of the staff, they blamed it on my father, who is in late stages of dementia. Given the lack of quality care, we removed our father from this facility on [date removed].
