Sunrise Senior Living

The people who handle the billing were not up front about the extra charges. They are also very, very impossible to reach and their level of communication is the worst I have ever experienced. No one really know what's going on and I live out of town, so it was even more difficult.

The food is not good at all, they cut a lot of corners with it. The current managers are not very friendly and are kind of patronizing of my mother. The former managers were awesome, but the current ones are making it miserable.

Sunrise did not have very good care. They were also pretty expensive. We have moved and now are paying less and getting better care. There are other options, and this is not the best.

I am no satisfied with the services provided. It seems there is a lack of coordination among the employees and the different areas. Mom's room was not clean when we arrived the first day, all room was on disarray. When mom went to emergency the information provided by Sunrise was wrong. Patient was left at the hospital without a follow up. We are supposed to receive a reimbursement from Sunrise which I have not received yet. However I received a bill of $14,120 after mom left. She was there two weeks and all expenses were paid beforehand. When I called to find out about this bill, the person said "disregard the bill", not a word like "sorry" "we did a mistake" nothing. Overall not a good experience. I do not recommend it.

Beautiful building, great marketing person, and nice size apartments. Housekeeping was outstanding. My mom was there for less than 60 days. Many staff changes. They changed dining hours when we complained that they were not following their own policy. One morning at breakfast they failed to serve her any liquids with her meal. One day the concierge signed my mom out for a walk when on admission we asked that she not be allowed to walk outside by herself. We were surprised that they expected us to hirer 24 nursing staff when they made the mistake and signed her out. We immediately removed her from the unit and called [removed].

We are really not a fan of this community. Very unfriendly staff. The RNs specifically are of very poor quality. Nurse Tamara was very rude to us. [removed] All in all not a good fit for us. We will find a different home for Mom.

Compassionate caring is not a high priority here at Brighton Gardens. Also, their response time to resident needs is hit or miss. The management is open to taking concerns, however, issues are not remediated and you have to constantly be "on them" to ensure that your relative receives the compassionate care that you expect (and that they promote in their advertising and when visiting). We are in the process of removing my relative from this place.

The independent living was fine, my loved one was there for a while. When we transferred to the assisted living, it was a whole different story. They were very understaffed. They had extremely poor communication between the staff and family. The staff is very overworked. They always had excuses. When my loved one fell, the call buttons didn't work, and we couldn't even get through, we had to call the concierge. The independent living is very good. A lot of the caregivers were very friendly, and did the best they could, but they were poorly organized. I had to hire private caregivers to care for my mom. You also have to give two months notice to move out, which is very unusual. And people are moving in and out all the time. It was untenable. The assisted living is dangerous and I feel unsafe having my mother there. The independent living is okay. They don't really have activities there either.

I haven't had experience with any other communities so I don't have much to compare it to, but so far I have been disappointed by my experience with Sunrise of Columbia. They have been unreliable when it comes to my loved one's medications, and I don't feel like they do a good job keeping me informed. One of the features they advertise is an on-site beauty shop, but they do not have anyone that works in it. And, on top of all this, the price I am being charged is higher than the price I was quoted when we moved our loved one in.

There procedures for sending Alzheimer's patients to the hospital needs alot of improvement, the care is good, staff is friendly, food is very good . The facility is clean just need to reexamine their procedures with communication with family members of residents.

This place was not waht we were looking for. The outside was very nice, but inside was rundown and a bit dirty. Not a place for my mom. However, Chris, who took us around was very nice and helpful.

As the son of a parent who recently stayed there and visited every single day, I noticed a lot I did not like and had a lot to say about what I saw there. As this was all new to me, I didn't know what to expect, but I did expect more empathy and understanding than I got. Right from the start, I was unaware I needed to put my mother's name on her clothing, and was informed after the fact that this is basic, by the staff. Basic for those who do this for a living, not me. Anyway, a few days in, I noticed another resident wearing my mother's clothes for a few days, and brought it to their attention. I didn't think this was right, but it seemed the blame was put on me for not adding mother's name to her clothing. Throughout mother's stay there, this had become the pattern. I would speak up and say something, and the staff would turn it around and make me feel like I was wrong for pointing it out. So, if no name is on the clothes, they are just given out to whoever. My dealing with the social worker there was usually unpleasant as well most of the time. ( I don't appreciate being spoken to like a child-I'm an adult, she should have known this as at one point she responded inappropriately to one of my comments to her "You're a grown man") My mother has a tendency to fall out of bed, I told them this, she fell out at least twice, and I got called in the evening advising me, I wasn't quite sure how to respond to that but they said they are required to call me. They make NO effort to address this, I made a few suggestions, and was told no constantly (no rail on bed, no chairs by bed, no to sitting in a chair until she gets sleepy, no to this, no to that) These people are in this business and should know what to do, my mother can't be the only resident like this, but apparently based on one conversation with a staff member there, I was told yes, she is. Odd for sure. Upon moving her to the assisted living side, I mentioned this, was told a rubber mat (later on advised for purchase) could be placed along side the bed, (but it wasn't at first), and the bed could be lowered. The staff seems to stick to a standard script with a smile. I got "yessed" a lot, but them being more proactive would have been nice. They tell me they are not allowed to restrain residents, but allowing them to fall out of bed is fine, it seems. Additionally my mother developed a huge bruise on her upper thigh, the nurse who I had a few issues with as well, advised me with very little concern that Mom was bleeding internally due to this bruise (like this too was my fault). One time, after I made my thoughts known about something connected to Mom's care that I wasn't happy with-I can't even remember now what specifically it was, as there were SO many, this same nurse came up to me, to explain herself in a somewhat defensive manner. My guess is mother got this bruise falling out of bed, it didn't just happen by itself, and I refuse to believe my mother who is frail and fragile would NOT bruise after a fall out of bed. My take on this whole experience is that the place exists to make money first and foremost, and providing care is secondary. The staff all seem to speak from a rehearsed script (probably due to hearing it all over and over) The place looks great, and the dog and cat there are a nice plus too. Some of the staff went out of their way to be pleasant, but I expected more as I was there every day . I didn't expect to make friends there, but didn't expect to be ignored either. It doesn't cost anything to smile and say hello, and at what they charge, that should be included by the unfriendly staff. I now think after my dealings with them, a smile and a hello from the staff could be requested, with an added extra over-charge to the bill From my daily observations, it appeared most residents got very few visitors, so my being there daily had to stand out. I was told of many visitors to the residents there, one of many lies and stories I was told on a regular basis. I also noticed many residents often sitting in public areas sound asleep in the afternoons. A few sporadic activities went on during this time, but I thought it might be a good idea if these people could get involved in something more interesting than bingo. From what I saw, the effort to get residents involved was non existent. .

Totally agree with other reviewer about Holiday policies. Staff was great. Food was inconsistent. Nice management when we moved my parents in. Soon after, management changed and new manager was rude and belligerent. Called me in the middle of the night to tell me father had fallen, but was fine. I got the impression that if he was gonna be woken up in the night, then so was I. Parents health deteriorated to point that they had to be moved for safety reasons. I was told by an industry professional that companies usually let tenants out of their lease early if it's for health reasons, but Holiday would not budge. I discovered too late that their "community fee" was ridiculously high compared to other facilities in Denver area.

I arranged for my mother's care long distance. Once she was moved I have been unable to get any reports about her even though I was promised reports on a regular basis when I made arrangements for her to move here. I have had difficulty reaching the contact person whose name I was given since my mother does not have a phone in her room. When I call I'm told my mother is in her room and they can't get a phone to her. When I leave messages for my contact there I do not get a return phone calls. I therefore cannot give a positive review because I am unable to reach anybody, including my mother, who can give me any information or help.

Justin was nice! However, I did not like the memory care unit. I got the feeling walking through there that the residents were not engaged with any of the staff. They were just sitting around looking sad and lost. My mom did not like it at all. There were lots of "smells" that were not pleasant at one point. It was a beautiful facility so it was strange how I got a "nursing home" feel about it

We have not had a good experience so far with Sunrise of Holbrook. We pay extra for a higher level of care for some specific things, and they never seem to follow through with them. Our loved one just does not seem clean and well taken care of, her hair is always filthy when we visit. It is also very hard to communicate with the management, they NEVER return phone calls, you just have to keep trying until you manage to speak to the specific person you're trying to reach. One of the big things that made us choose this place was that they would allow her to bring her dog, but now we are getting all kinds of pushback about it. Based on the experience we have had I would not recommend this place.

My Mom lived here in Memory Care for 18 months. We chose this place in a hurry moving her here from another state. The first year was okay, but not worth what they charge. Our price increased 30% in 18 months. After six months of their failure to handle dimentia symptoms or prevent falls and unnecessary ER visits, we researched other homes in the area. Wow! We should have done that sooner. We moved her and are now getting better care for much, much less. We don't get called all the time, and no more expensive, time-consuming ridiculous ER visits. They reduced her meds and she is so much happier and healthier at the new place, and so are we. The memory care at Sunrise quite frankly doesn't have the expertise to handle dimentia. They are chronically understaffed. They have high turnover and low training. Their communication amongst staff, management, and nursing is non-existent. The nurses (when they are not vacant positions) are upstairs behind locked doors, and really are not involved. The Memory Care coordinator also sits behind a locked door, blinds down and never reads her email. When she goes on vacation - you get a management free zone. You don't get what you pay for, and the price is stupid high. I should have moved my Mom out of here sooner.

They could not provide the care they said they could when my mom was in assisted living. They constantly failed to abide by specific instructions given and no was ever available after 5p weeknights or on weekends to speak IF someone needed a doctor you had to take them to one yourself and they sent my mom to the hospital twice. The second time she was in hospice and they were suppose to call hospice not an ambulance. $$$$ Their "DR", whom I never meet or spoke with, would charge for an in-house visit when it was not requested and never contacted me about the results if any of the visit. They shared their nurse with another facility so many times she would not be available and never after 5pm or weekends. I thought the management was horrible. They didn't seem to be able to instruct the staff on individual care. It was an expensive mistake to put my mom there. They tell you all the good stuff to get you in, example: they have a hydra tub for baths that you could use once a week. My mom used it once and said the people had a difficult time getting it running because they were not used to using the tub. When she used her "button" to call because she needed to use the restroom and needed help, they would say they never received her call to help. I would questions them about that and they said that a 15-20 minute wait was no unreasonable. It was always one thing or another and I was constantly trying to get the services my mom needed.

Our experience with this community has been a disappointing one overall. When we were touring communities they put on a very good face, but the follow-through has been lacking. There are a few things they do quite well here, however. The housekeeping and maintenance staff are all very friendly, and do a good job keeping the building clean, and they've also got a very nice activities director. The management staff has been far less pleasant to work with. We feel like they don't listen to the residents at all, or even welcome our input. Any suggestion you offer them get a response of it "not being corporate policy. It feels very impersonal and unfriendly, and more like they are more interested in saving money than making this a good place to live.

My mother is now in the advanced stages of Dementia. Currently she resides at Garden Terrace. I love that place. Her care is the best. We did have her at Sunrise before that and they were not staffed for advanced dementia. People were being neglected due to short staffing. Those that could not walk were left in their rooms except to eat. There were several people that were leaving after us from what they told us. I was horribly disappointed in Sunrise as they said they could care for my mother and that is why we moved her there. After 5 months we moved her to Garden Terrace. We moved mom because It is now all about her care. Before Sunrise we had her at Claire Bridge. They could no longer care for her and recommended Garden Terrace. Wish we had listened.
