Sunrise of Westfield offers a handful of activities for the residents to participate in. However this community was not at all prepared to handle the needs of our loved one. When we were first looking at this community they had a great sales department, but once we moved our loved one in, everything went downhill. The communication was really lacking. The overall look of this community is nice, but the rooms are more on the smaller side.

The community overall was pretty clean. The staff was friendly for the most part. When the community first interviewed my mother, they misdiagnosed her need for assisted living rather than memory care, which was what she really needed. She moved in and couldn't remember where her room was so we had to hire an outside, full-time caregiver to assist her. We ended up needed to move her out of the community even though she was only there for a short time. They also did not give us our down payment back.

I feel like that evaluation wasn't accurate and they immediately said my mother was appropriate and could meet her needs but they could not. Also, the coordinator of the memory care had no medical background or knowledge. The staff were not loving at all. They just ignored my mother. The staff would blame everything she did on her. They "nickel and dimed" us for everything, costing $30,000 in just two months. It was an incredibly expensive mistake. I would highly suggest that if you are considering placing your loved one at Sunrise's memory care, ask for a trial period first.

My parents are in their 90s, but I felt like they are too young for this place. Probably good for people with more limitations, but without even a microwave in the apartment, it wouldn't do at all for them.

facilities were dated and noticed a sour, musty smell when we entered. Some of the furniture was skratched and cushions on chairs and couches were worn, faded. We were not impressed and could not see our mother living there. The tour guide did not sit down with us first just walked us around and asked if we had questions. He did answer our questions but it didn't feel personal at all.

My mother has been at this community for 6 months. We selected it based on the high ratings and PR provided by the sales team. We’ve tried to be understanding and allow for a “break in” period. We’ve had experience with other communities for my father and mother-in-Law at much lower costs. I must say that most of the healthy residents really do like it here. Those that need to depend on their services, not so much, based on the complaints from the residents’ council meetings. Medications are not delivered on time. If an emergency button is pushed by a resident to request a medication, there is no rush to get it to that person. Things disappear from residents’ rooms. Food is often served cold, dessert may be dropped off before entree’s are eaten. Although there is a menu, servers seem to drop off food randomly without waiting for an order. I stayed for dinner recently and found ice in the middle of my slice of meat loaf. Caregivers seem to order services w/o asking permission from the people who pay the bills. Though i’m perfectly capable of cutting my mother’s toenails, apparently an appointment was set up with a podiatrist who charged $67 to trim her nails. Before she moved in, all of her medications were carefully gone over with the staff (including the nurse) of the community, prices given, etc. Two months in, she needed one of these drugs, only to discover it was never ordered. I had planned an outing with my mom through the activities’ director who explained how it would work, where the people going on the outing would sit to have lunch, etc., etc. I arrived to discover that my mom had not come down to the designated area to join the group for lunch an hour earlier, but no one had thought to send someone up to her room to see why not. So when I got there to get on the bus, she was still in her room in her pj’s. Of course we missed the trip. But how could the activity director sit there for an hour of lunch and not check on one of the participants who wasn’t where she was suppose to be in an assisted living community? Despite the high cost of this community, I don’t believe they pay very high wages. I have absolutely nothing against any nationality or minority, but due to accents, inflections or pronunciations there is a communication problem with a high percentage of the staff exacerbated by poor hearing by many of the residents. This is true of the physical therapists, the caregivers, the nurses, the dining staff etc. The more assistance you need, the bigger the problem is. Those that don’t need physical care seem to be happy here. It is noteworthy that though the community is close to capacity of 100 people, there are rarely more than the same 15 to 20 (at the absolute most) people at an activity, an often a lot less. The same people monopolize the sofa and chairs in the living room ALL the time and the same 4 or 5 people monopolize the big screen TV room all day although they are just sleeping in the room. So those two rooms with comfy chairs are always unavailable. The facility is well taken care of, with unused staged seating areas throughout the second and third floor. My mom can no longer walk, doesn’t like to play cards, and finds most of movies offerings incredibly boring (I would agree if you have a TV in your room.) The Fireside chats are dominated by the crew that lives in the living room 7 days a week, so that’s a predictable activity. The community says they have a resident dog, but it is apparently very old, in poor health, comes in with a staff member and my mom has yet to see it. The pet therapy dog comes in to see the living room crew and Valerie. No one ever takes the time to explain the activities to new residents which would be nice, or to give them a personal invite or introduction to others. You are sort of own your own. Activities don’t necessarily happen on time or at all. If you don’t like lemon flavored water, you are out of luck, because that’s all that is offered. And forget about the constant availability of some yummy sweet snacks which i’ve found at every other community I’ve ever visited. If you’ve still got good teeth there are often apples. Otherwise, there are packs of teeny tiny graham crackers.

We were not impressed with this facility during our visit. The staff seemed nice enough but other than the very pleasant receptionist, the interaction between staff and residents appeared lacking. The floors were not clean with red tape in the second floor indicating resident name for room, they indicated they were renovating so my assumption is once finished the second floor will look more like the first that was slightly cleaner than the first floor.

I have held off sending a review hoping that things would improve at this place but....unfortunately is has not! ~ I absolutely LOVE [name removed] the office manager and [name removed] one of the servers but that's about all the good I can say about this place! My biggest beef is the horrible food!!!! The meat is usually full of gristle, overcooked, mushy, tasteless, not fresh, prepackaged crap!!! The salad is wilted and tasteless! The vegetables are either undercooked or overcooked! The dinner rolls are actually [removed] I wouldn't feed most of what they serve to a dog if I had one! Yet alone expect my loved one to have to eat it! When I moved my parent into this place over a year ago the food was at least palatable! But NOW....it is just downright awful! The last good meal that I know of was last Thanksgiving dinner and prior to that and since then I can't bring myself to join my parent for any meal. I get sent pics of meals that are served and it is stomach wrenching to look at! I have voiced my concerns to the local management but it doesn't appear to be a priority! Next is the cleanliness of the home overall. It has gone from, in opinion, fairly clean to nasty! The bathrooms in particular. On numerous occasitons I have needed to use the restroom while I was there visiting and have gotten a belly ache from the current standard smell and cleanliness of the bathrooms that are meant for visitors. I would like to keep my parent here but if it continues down the same path that it's on, I'm going to be forced with the decision of making a move to another home!

After being there for four weeks we were asked to move our mom to the memory care unit so that she would fit in better. We did and the amount of activity time dropped considerably. They liked to have everyone sit in common room, but no activities going on. She was also assigned to a room where her roommate yelled all the time, toilet didn't work and they did not report her falls to the family.

my husband was in memory care area and was falling all the time. the center is much too small for walker and wheelchair clients. the room was very small as well as activity area. not the best place for an ambulatory patient who uses a walker. also i felt it is too expensive for what he was given. have moved him to another facility with a large room and area for activities. he has not had a near fall since his transfer. also everything is included in their fee per month and is cheaper.the new facility also has a room motion detector and cameras in the halls. i had requested something to detect his movement at night at stratford court memory center and was told it was too expensive. i also feel center was under staffed. also felt uncomfortable when ever i arrive as the persons in assistant living center where always lined up on both sides of common area doing very little. i would not recommend the memory care center.

My father was in the health care building getting rehab after orthopaedic surgery. Therapy was fair but the nursing care was sub par. Nurses arguing with each other in the hall, administrators eating & joking while staff runs around answering call bells. I’m an ER nurse myself & I recognize unhappy nurses when I see them. Sorry to say this place should be a HARD NO for everyone.

Nobody from The Jeffterson contacted me after the appointment was set up. When I arrived with a friend, no one knew we had an appointment. The person in charge of tours was not in that day. A helpful woman stepped in and took us around. The apartments were a good size, but none that we saw had a walk-in/roll-in shower. The facility appeared to have the basics, including access to a good PT staff. We didn’t see any residents, so I can’t assess whether it was a happy place, or how the staff interacted with residents. My overall impression was that the place was dreary, and more expensive than a nearby assisted living facility.

I live here, and I have been in tears twice today because the staff is so uncaring and hostile. The people who were supposed to get me up this morning did not answer my repeated rings on my call button for over 45 minutes and then A care manager came in, reset the button and just left again for another 45 minutes. I do not know how I am going to be able to get up and be dressed and catch a cab to court, which is where I have to go on Friday, and be there by 9 o’clock. That was this morning. This evening I told the caregiver that she had arranged the sling for the Hoyer lift incorrectly, and was very hostile as I told her how to fix it, and did not even do it correctly. I feel quite sorry for more elderly people who are not able to care for themselves.

I'm a resident here, and the regular staff is usually friendly and consistently positive. But not all managers provide the same level of professional response. Some just leave me wondering how they got to their top position, not having the professional understandings, composure, and patience to fulfil expected fundamental job requirements. ... some easily lose patience with residents; as if they bring personal issues to work; ... some respond by talking harshly, as if that's the only way to get response from residents; ... there are some staff who turn the jukebox up high, while residents are trying to talk and understand each other in a common seating area; we simply are not as smart as we used to be, nor our hearing as strong. ... some Rx medication staff talk in frustration, rather than speaking with kindness to some residents who ask if they took their morning meds yet; this is a daily event, rather than having thoughts of a kind-response, and showing the resident where they signed the morning medication chart. ... some staff needs to learn how to Breathe in, breathe out; think and understand the assorted living situations. Show compassion, eliminate any competition in being better than us, in being smarter than us; in making us appear to be failures. Make better use of their healthy brains. We are the people who live here, who require special care. This ain't no hotel for independent yuppies, with BMWs, saunas, and daily wins in the Stock Market. Summary It becomes important to realize each Sunrise location is also under corporate management, who will get involved when local matters are unable to be properly resolved in a timely manner. The Sunrise of Arlington, MA is under the corporate management of the "Sunrise Corporate Office (McLean, VA)" see: [removed] This review will get updated, hoping for positive changes. $4k/mo rent. 2.5 stars is a fair rating [4/2018]. Misc positive notes: The 3rd floor is for people requiring memory care, and the services and staff are terrific. I visit people there, and am routinely impressed with the experience. Also, the location is excellent, with the public MBTA bus service located next door, and plenty of places close by to shop, and eat, etc.
