Sunrise Senior Living

Sunrise of Leawood is a good community. We have had some problems with the staff following through on care for my Mom. She has poor vision and is not mobile. They seem to forget this and are not attentive to her grooming needs and overall well being. She is often bypassed for activities because of her disabilities and therefore does not participate in as many activities as possible. There was a mix up with her medication and it took quite a while to remedy the situation. The food is good but the dining room is not as well organized as possible but I hear it is getting better. She does wear a pendant so her safety is not compromised. I just hope that the staff becomes more aware of the needs of some of their residents.

My experience with Sunrise at Montgomery Village has been somewhat of a mixed one. For the most the staff here are friendly, and they've seemed very attentive to the needs of the residents. They notice if someone hasn't come down to breakfast and go check on them, and the maintenance staff responds quickly to any issues that come up. They also have a fairly good dining service. More often than not the food is very good, although there are a few dishes to avoid, and they have a well stocked and maintained salad bar. The desserts are dangerously good, and very hard to resist! They also seem to have a good variety of activities, although I have not participated in many personally. The main issue bringing the whole experience down is that the cleaning staff just does not seem well trained. They lack a lot of attention to detail, and I feel like I have to do a good bit of cleaning myself either before they arrive or after they leave.

unlimited resources I would recommend but it is very costly said over all I would give it a 3 star... the cleanliness of property was good There's a high 1st bill the value of the facility is decent, a lot of people stop working there, mom was not getting showers the 1st couple of weeks..now getting 1 shower a week due to what mom said.

i would recommend get all info no house doctor that is problem for whell chair bound people but other than that very good have bingo everyday! mom loves it but was only there for a week or so..staff was very helpful and friendly the client rated the over all as a 5 star said she like the activites there for her mom..client gave a 4 star rating on the cleanliness of the location the client all so gave a 5 star on friendliness..

They were not upfront about costs and they were charging outrageous prices for my mother's meds. The staff was friendly and cared for my mother, facility itself is average my mother is no longer there but they also kept raising her rent. I would not recommend due to pricing and communication issues.

My friend who we placed at Sunrise of Bloomingdale was only there for a few weeks before being transferred out. They were good for the most part but there were a few areas for improvement. One area where they could improve would be to have better proactive communication with the families. They did a really good job providing for the individuals needs though, and they try their best.

First disappointment was that it was very hard to find parking. After driving through parking lot 2 times, someone came out and I was able to take that space. Second disappointment was that all areas are open to pets (cats and dogs), having no area designated for those who have allergies. Never made it to the tour. It would be a great fit for those who want to keep their pets with them.

My mother lives there. All the staff are very nice. The place is kept very clean. I am only disappointed that they don't do more to make the new residents more comfortable with all the residents. My mother was put at a table with people that don't talk. WHY.? She talks. It only makes her more depressed. I have asked to make this right many times.

Overall we have been mostly satisfied with Sunrise during our first 2 weeks. The biggest issue is that there does not seem to be great communication both among the staff as well as with us. My mother needs assistance going to meals, and will often say she does not want to go. Instead of encouraging her to attend meals and activities the care givers seem content with her answer and just leave her in her room. One of the main reasons we chose Sunrise was that we thought she was going to get a lot of interaction with other members of the community as well as the staff. So far that has been a bit disappointing. They are also not communicating between each other This first 2 weeks is a tough time for everyone and there seems be a lot of confusion about my mother's needs both as far as assistance and medically. We feel like we need to have someone from our family or a friend on site everyday to make sure she is getting the proper care. My mother will not complain so that puts her in a spot where despite the fact that she needs assistance, she does not get it. She thinks if she asks for help she is being difficutl. My expectation was that the Sunrise staff was going to be much more involved with her especially during this initial phase. I will say that overall the staff is very friendly when you reach out to them, but many of them seemed to be overworked, especially the LPN's which I think causes some of the lack of attention. I am hopefully as she gets more settled in that things will get into a routine and she will get all the assistance and encouragement she needs.

Small quaint little place. Clean and bright. The studio and companion apartments are very small. There are additional costs and this raises the price per month depending level of care. Too expensive.

Since this residence accepts non-ambulatory residents, there are many residents that just sit all day. The problem is that there aren't many places for residents to sit. They are either sitting at a meal, sitting in the "cafe", which is basically the same as sitting for a meal, or sitting in a small crowded "living room" in front of a television. There are not enough "common" areas for residents to "hang out". It becomes very boring and monotonous for those that cannot participate in any activities. It is also very noisy since so many people are clustered into these adjacent areas. Also, I found that there is poor communication from one shift to the other or one aide to another about the resident. I have received different information when asking the same questions to different aides who have been with my father. I have also found the wait staff to be abrupt, not patient or kind or warm or friendly. The bathroom on the main level is always dirty and occupied. There isn't enough bathrooms on the main level for all those who are parked there all day.

Great food. Previously visited. Staff not interacting with residents unless absolutely needed, not changing beds when needed...head women a tad too head strong. Yet, quite responsive if expressed concern. Didn't notice a wound on my uncle...I had to bring it to their attention.

We put my mother in there with high hopes and she wasn't even there 24 hrs before something happened. We asked them to keep an eye on her since it was a new transition for her. She was moved over to memory care. They ensured us that they would keep a good eye on her but that night they found her crawling in the hallway with her head split open. They rushed her to the hospital. But they reassured us and frankly we didn't trust sunrise anymore. So we hired Senior Helpers for 3 nights and of course we paid extra for someone to sit in her room and she was fine those 3 whole days. She ended up back in hospital and we took her out and transferred for to Westown.

I would give our daily Nurses, Staff, and Aids 10 stars if possible. They are great! But, I can't because there is a big communication break down in the office. The Staff in the office is very friendly, but better communication practices would make my stay and overall experience much more pleasant and less frustrating.

Have spoken with facility, their specialty is more geared for memory care but still a possibility

Sunrise as a facility is good, and the staff are wonderful. The problem is with the higher ups. They cannot be trusted and will give you a lot of headaches to deal with. We had more problems with management than I care to list here, but the culminating problem was them wanting to put my grandmother into the alzheimer's unit long before it was appropriate to even consider. This was an opinion shared by the staff who dealt with her regularly as well as by us. In fact the staff loved her, and were extremely upset over the situation. Feeling that the alzheimer's unit was inappropriate at that time, we chose to move her to another facility. On moving day we were visited by quite a few staff members who were ecstatic that we weren't putting her into the alzheimer's unit. Apparently the staff had been told by management that we were the ones insisting on putting her in the alzheimer's unit, and were quite upset as they also felt it was not yet appropriate for her. One of the women was even crying in relief that we were moving her out rather than put her in that unit prematurely. Moving day was very eye opening. This is not to disparage the alzheimer's unit. When that level of care does become necessary, it's a very important unit to have, and is the appropriate decision to make. However, if someone is not yet at that level, it is inappropriate and a poor quality of life choice to put them there. We also did have some issues with one of the on call nurses not getting meds right, and their doctor did not bill something correctly, and many years later, we're still dealing with her error. To sum, the staff are really wonderful for the most part and really care about the residents, the facilities are nice, and very well maintained. Watch your back with management though - they cannot be trusted. Incidentally, I am now looking again at places, as my other grandmother may need one soon, and not only am I avoiding this facility, I'm now leery of any of the Sunrise facilities.

For the most part things have gone well with The Quadrangle. It is a nice looking place, and the staff seem friendly. However, their business and operating practices seem to push you towards using their doctor and pharmacy services, it would be nice if they were more accommodating to residents who have other medical services.

It just hasn't been quite what we expected. The morning routine seems to be extremely rushed, which does not set well with my mom. It has not been a smooth transition. It has only been a month, so we are optimistic that things will get better. The place is very nice and clean, and the staff is friendly, however they need better orientation and care services. Any time I have voiced any concern though they have shown a willingness to listen and help out where they can.

My mother was in the independent living building for about a year and a half, that was great! Terona is awesome! She always made herself available and she got things done! Even on her days off she would help you if needed. As my mothers dementia worsened she moved to the assisted living side on the 3rd floor which is the locked floor for alzheimer and severe dementia patients. Mom really didn't need that level of care yet, however the only room available at time. Linda that works on this floor was wonderful with mom! And Becca the floor supervisor was great also. Then we moved to the 4th floor, still dementia care but not as involved and not locked floor. The level of care has dropped. She has had many times left in her soiled garments and then changed herself, but not getting clean. The room is not kept clean as it should, her laundry with soiled clothing left too long and the room smells. If we complain things get done, however at this price we shouldn't have to!

Overall it has been a pretty good experience at Sunrise of New City. Mom has only been there for a very short time, but thus far it has met expectations.
