Sunrise Senior Living

It'seems a very lovely atmosphere but lacked the feel of a community. The staff didn't seem to be as familiar with the residents and the sales director continued to try to upsell me from a one bedroom to a two bedroom. She has also called several times offering specials, which is kind of her but I feel as though when you are trying to find a home for your parents it's a bit different then booking a vacation, to say the least.

Caregivers and staff are very engaged and happy to help in all ways. Response to issues is a positive experience. Largest complaint is that the facilty needs a refresh. Parking garage is filled with discarded appliances, common area outdoors is left unkept with debris and dead plants. A little effort in keeping up the appearance would help. Building is close to 30 years old but it could be more charming with more effort on aesthetics. Of note, plush carpet in the apartments makes use of wheelchairs and walkers a real challenge. Dining process is a bit cumbersome, but food is good. Entry would benefit from a place to park walkers etc. There are a lot of rules to keep up with but I suspect that is normal for senior care facilities.

Good food, nice staff but very expensive

It's like every other place, they are understaffed. It took a while to get someone to come. We weren't there very long, and we didn't really have any other issues, nothing was concerning or anything. I really think the staffing problem is everywhere.

Overall my experience with Sunrise was mixed. I found the pricing per service option was too expensive. The food is good and nicely prepared. The meal plans come from a corporate headquarters and they stick to the plans. When my family member arrived it took 5 weeks to set up the physical therapy through their nursing office. There is no physical therapy room, which would have been a plus. You are free to hire your own outside care providers, and I should have done more research and asked more questions. Early on I felt that there were not enough management people on site to supervise the operations. The care staff from Nepal is just wonderful. They are very nice people with a genuine desire to help the elderly people. At times, they are asked to work overtime to fill in for people who call out. It seemed like they were running from one task to the next and they were efficient. On occasion, the call system would take too long to get help. The housekeeping staff is excellent, and I never found the facility to be lacking in cleanliness. The dining room has been remodeled recently and is very pleasing to the eye. The same people who do the caregiving are in the dining area serving the food. I think a separate set of food delivery people would be appropriate to prevent cross contamination. Because it is run by a corporation, they are motivated to increase revenue and save on expenses. The annual increase was supposed to be for food costs, and staff wages, but I didn't see any better or higher quality food being served. You are wise to survey each facility, and even look at the outlying areas. Each place is different, and you may find something that suits your family very well. Sunrise is one of the better facilities if your family member needs a minimal amount of care. If the care needs increase, then you are going to pay for it through a higher level care plan or asked to leave if they don't feel their staff is qualified or adequate to take care of the needs. The daily rates can add up over time. Basically you are buying a rental room for your family member along with the food. Cleaning is included with laundry and bathing once a week. If you desire more services then there are add on fees depending on what you want and need. Remember that it is the quality of care that is the most important feature of any elderly assisted living operation.

The facility looks very nice, but the walls are not sound proof. You can hear conversations and the noise next door. Breakfast consists of canned fruit, frozen donuts, cereals, eggs, bacon, sausage, juices, coffee, tea, milk, and pancakes. Lunch is soup, sandwiches, salad, hamburgers, meat, fries, chicken, fish, and a dessert. Dinners are chili, vegetables, spaghetti, meatloaf, chicken, fish, salads, and pork. There are plenty of choices with each meal. The same people who serve food also perform chores for the residents like bathing, help with the toilet, dressing, laundry, pushing wheelchairs, and any assistance needed. The care managers are very nice people and they show respect for the elderly people. The fees are on the higher side of care costs. They do not provide rides other than the scheduled activity for the day. The medicines are given in the dining area. The level of care is determined by a point system which has the effect of increasing costs. I had the feeling that the staff was always running from one thing to the next. Wait times for the call system were too long in some cases. The building is spread out, so it is easy to get exercise indoors by walking. A physical therapy room is needed to add to the physical wellness of residents. The housekeepers are always cleaning. The daily classes are good with yoga, singing, stretching, art, movies, scenic rides, and trips to a store or restaurant. The most important thing to look for is the quality of care for your elderly people. Compare the most important offerings with other facilities to help with your decisions on the best place to live. Get more than one reference and ask to meet the staff first. Ask about qualifications and training. Look at more than one room, and ask if you can attend a meal to get the feel of the way things work each day.

Met with Jim [Removed]. Toured Community had lunch. Pleasant facility friendly residents lots of activities good economic model. First place we have visited so giving a 3-star rating to leave room up and down as we continue our search

Was impressed

We moved my mom into Highland Trail a few weeks ago. They claimed to have good food, cleaning staff and ambassadors to help new residents adjust. None of those things were true. There is extremely high turnover in the management and the staff. The newest management is trying hard to make things better; we'll give it another month to see if that happens. Most of the residents that my mom has met are unhappy there.

Neil is lovely. Everyone genuinely liked him. Impressed with such a happy staff. Wonderful little areas to sit beautiful grounds. Rooms a little beat up and very tiny no closet space. If in memory care do not take advantage of whole house so the biggest asset is moot. Level of care available excellent but not very forth coming of pricing. Biggest down is the 911 hospital is Norwood Hospital. Deal breaker

Most rooms facing huge parking lot. Big place felt noisy. Grounds very restricted in back and felt like a hotel not home. All the employees seemed very nice and sincere. Did notice some cliques of aids hanging out by themselves in common space ignoring all others.

My first hand experience was not so terrific.......frequent turnover of Executive Director and adminstrative staff is troublesome, communication with family members is not so good. The physical plant is well maintained but the personal care assistants and direct care workers are overloaded with tasks and cannot manage. The dining room is crowded and not comfortable. For the cost, which increases as time goes by, I am not impressed with the Sunrise experience. The entire industry is just about the money!!!!!

They could give them more things to do. The lack of stuff for them to do is not good, which is why I am looking around for another facility. They need more activities and better activities that would interest the residents.

It is going okay, but not as good as I thought it would be. I had high hopes for this place, but it is mediocre at best. I think that they try, but it could definitely be a better experience overall.

We had a mixed experience with The Colonnades. The facility itself was nice enough, and the services they provided were good. However, my loved one needed to move from their independent living into their assisted living wing, and they did not have any availability. I wasn't impressed with the way they went about handling this issue.

We toured this community, and while it was a nice enough looking place I don't think it would have been a good fit for our loved one. It was a very large community, and I think it would have been difficult for him to navigate. Everyone was friendly, but I heard from the staff that there had been some recent management changes, and things just seemed a little disorganized.

The staff was very friendly. The property is very nice. I moved my mom out of here. The cost was high. The care services they provide needs improvement. I moved my mom out of here because they were not bathing her.

Our experience with Sunrise has been somewhat mixed. The facility itself is well kept and clean, and the care staff is friendly and professional. The care provided in the memory care section has been just what my Dad needed. Mom, who is physically frail, insisted on staying with Dad in Memory Care. I am not sure her frailty has been addressed properly in Memory Care as she's been in the hospital 2x in the first month since moving to Sunrise. Allowing her to stay in the Memory Care unit may not have been the best decision for her continued mental health. I'd advise that families looking to place a loved one here make sure that the care provided is up to what their loved one needs, especially regarding falling issues.

It's a very nice place and facility. The staff are generally very good and friendly. Care services could be a little better and more formal/strict. And, my parent constantly complains about the food not being any good. Most of it is commercial heat n serve stuff. But, it could be age related some too.
