I liked that they did constant remodeling, even though the building was 25 years old it looked new. I liked that they had a list of all the things they had going on in the next year, and I got to speak with the security/maintenance guy. They were remodeling all the apartments to have granite counter tops. They thought that they were number one in customizing your room, adjusting the closet space or things like that. The apartments were really pretty. The food wasn't very good, though. The location wasn't ideal, the whole area has kind of gone downhill a little bit.

I am a family member of a resident. The facility is lovely and very home like. The care managers are excellent. The management staff, however is in dire need of organizational, communication and time-management skills. The nursing staff is minimal, though excellent. There is no nurse available every night, and there are only 3 care managers available in the evenings for the entire facility. The visiting doctor is excellent. They boast a designated care manager team for residents (especially important to those with dementia) to build a comfortable and comforting relationship with a specific team of care managers. My loved one has dementia, but is still high functioning. They keep changing the "team" who helps her...and that is not good. She never feels "comfortable" with "strangers" helping her shower, and other personal tasks. If the "team" were consistently made up of the same care managers, this would not be a problem. The food is good. (I still can't figure out why they use canned fruit & veggies all year round, when fresh is always available.) The menu consists of a choice of two main entrees, and a 2 alternates. The hamburgers and hot dogs are good and very popular...which tells you something about the main entrees. The apartments are lovely, and are kept fairly clean. The housekeeping is done once per week, and linens are changed once per week. However, the "cleaning" does not seem to include the window seat/sills nor the ceilings. The activities are boring after a few months...same bingo, movies, crossword puzzles. Beading and watching someone bake cookies, and at least one entertainer/wk seem to be it. Trips to local stores, shopping centers and Atlantic City are few and far between. Overall I would probably recommend Sunrise at Jackson, but with reservations regarding management and stimulating activities.

This place has both assisted living and memory care. You had to walk through the assisted living to get to the memory care. It was a nice place, at least the assisted living, but the contrast was a bit much. The people in the assisted living side were active and saying hello, and then the memory care was sad and depressing. We wanted something that only did memory care. This just wasn't the best fit for us.

There is one thing I would like to see improved, it's their activities. They herd everyone into a small room and they sit around and unless you can do bingo, or play certain board games, it's not very stimulating. For them to have some more active, activities, I think would be nice. The food would be about a 3.5 or a 4. The sales people were very nice. They are very clean, and they groomed him well and he was always clean.

Great place for still active seniors as well as those who have started to slow down. The location is in the middle of an urban but not too "citified" area with shops, a mall, Starbucks and restaurants within walking distance. The facility itself is very nice, has a nice restaurant where my parents get one meal a day with the option to pick it up and bring to their very own condo. The condo units are built with the elderly in mind. A compact kitchen but with wide doorways to allow their walkers to easily pass through. The condo unit was a great value given this market (senior living) hasn't quite bounced back. The units are typically below condos in the same area because of the age and monthly fee restrictions. However they are currently going for as much as 3-4 times less. The monthly fees for two people are reasonable and include linen/towel change, 1x week cleaning, 1 meal per person per day, alert system in the unit and around the neck tokens for each resident, rides to local dr, banks, grocery, etc. and tons of daily activities on premise with field trips elsewhere in DC..

Overall the staff was very nice. I like the Sunrise philosophy. My aunt was only there 3 months before she passed. She was especially difficult and they did the best they could. It was unfortunate that she had to spend 5 or 6 weeks in the memory unit initially, as she didn't really need it and it gave her a unpleasant introduction to her new environment. I do however, find the organization called "a place for Mom" too persistent and got way too much contact from them. I do not think they serve that important a purpose, as I really did the research on my own.

This Sunrise is quite clean and the housekeeping staff works hard to keep it that way, but they seem to pay more attention to the public areas that everyone sees. When my mother first moved there, I had concerns about her physical care; was she being showered/shampooed often enough, were her nails clean, etc. but now she's in a routine and looks neatly groomed every day. Her dementia is quite advanced, and she is usually asleep in her chair when I arrive for a visit; I'm told that she participates in group activities, but I seldom see it happening. That said, they do offer many activities, especially in good weather when weekly field trips and picnics are planned. There is a lovely rooftop deck with flowering plants, trellises, and wicker furnishings, where the residents spend lots of time in the nice weather - and lunch is often served out there on pleasant days. All the big holidays are celebrated with fanfare, and clearly the effort is made to engage the residents. Family members are encouraged to participate as much as possible. The director has very good intentions and makes heroic efforts to achieve goals for the facility. The nursing staff is pretty on top of things, and quick to respond to any health issues. However, the caregiver staff is less professional than they could be. One source of frustration is that my mother's toiletries (shampoo, body wash, and wipes) often go missing just a few days after I bring new products to her room. In addition, other residents' clothing turns up in her closet on a regular basis, indicating a lack of care in the laundry service. In terms of the infrastructure, more care should be taken of the common areas. For example, the table cloths in the dining room are worn out to the point of being torn and threadbare. While it's great that they are laundered frequently, they should be replaced altogether when they are clearly falling apart. The living room and common area furnishings, where the dementia residents "hang out" during the day, are shabby and grubby-looking. Perhaps the Sunrise powers-that-be could focus less on their profit margins and either repair or update furniture that's soiled or broken, such as the dining room chairs. I like the fact that my mother is in a residential, rather than institutional, home-like setting. It's a pleasant environment for her, and she responds well to it. The activities coordinator makes sure that the residents on the dementia floor eat meals in the main dining room downstairs once or twice a week, so they get a change of scenery. There is excellent variety in the dining service, and my mom seems to enjoy her meals. It is always well-prepared, with lots of options. Volunteer musicians come to entertain the residents every week, playing piano, guitar, or other instruments.

We toured this location when we were looking for options for our loved one. It seemed like a nice a place, it was clean and the staff were friendly, but compared to others we saw it fell a bit short. It was an older facility, and it showed a bit. The residents also didn't appear to be as active as other locations we saw.

The staff seems very caring, and attentive. Property is well maintained. They have contacted me whenever there was a "need" for supplies, or an "event" (even the slightest injury or health issue). They do care, but make no mistake...they will drain your loved one's assets just as fast as they possibly can. After all, this is a for-profit business. Be "on guard" regarding the care level they deem necessary, and that which is actually provided! Nice property. Well maintained...but watch your $$$

I became a caregiver to an elderly woman who was literally withdrawing from society and ignoring her health issues. The loss of her husband compounded her mental status. After exhausting attempts to provide agencies to aide her situation, the problem still pursued. Finally, I convinced my client to visit Sunrise, and she signed the dotted line without coercion or convincing. Now, my client has a life again!!! All she needs to do is venture out the apartment door and people, activities and food are available to her. No more isolation and despair. Malnutrition is not an issue any longer. In fact, she is so busy now, no one can reach her on the phone. Unlike the past, where her only human contact was the phone. She is no longer a nuisance to others. Everyone she knows recognizes and praises her decision to select Sunrise .

Something about this place that I didn't like is that they had the memory care on the top floor of the building. I'm glad that my parents are here, I'm so glad they're here, it's so much better than them being at home but there's been some things that have been real, real issues. It says clearly in the booklet that we'd have a meeting with them in the first 30 days and we'd assumed that that would be on their initiation but they've been there 4 months. We've all been so busy trying to handle their estate so we haven't called them and asked. My mother's make up was stolen, it was brand new and I had it in a pretty little bag and went there to do her make up and it was gone. I kicked up a fuss and a week later it was back in her drawer. Another thing happened that should not have happened, she got a gorgeous chrysanthemum for her birthday, one of those that you can replant, and my sister went back there to get it so she could put it in her yard and it was gone. They had all of these other dead plants that were there but this pretty live one was gone. She asked my daddy what had happened and he said one of the ladies asked if she could take it and that it was dead. Overall, we're still being very sweet to everybody because we don't know who did those things so we're acting like they never happened, we want them to treat our parents well. I have to emphasize that I'm glad they're there. The care seems good, my mother wears diapers; they go get them early in the morning and get her dressed and change her diaper and take her out to activities, they keep her there all day, (my dad can come and go as he pleases) but I have been there a couple of times during the day and they were changing her so that pleases me. I know that they're safe and somebody's there at night and if something happens my dad can pull the cord. The good thing too that people should know when they're thinking about this, is the medications my parents were on when they were at home, the sitter's can't keep up with it, it's not a part of their job description so I would have to run up there and make doctors appointments or try to get things refilled and now there's none of that, it makes it so much easier.
