Carriage Hill is a very attractive, well-kept, Assisted Living facility that also offers Alzheimer's Care. It is located in a quiet neighborhood, off Route 460; it is also one of the few Assisted Living facilities in the Lynchburg/Bedford Area that take insurance & Medicare. In my experience, the administrator was very welcoming & informative. The staff I encountered during my weekly visits were friendly & helpful; I was told that a variety of activities were provided, however not when I was there. While the overall care for this ambulatory was good. 2 main concerns were expressed by the family. The first was that the patient had to see the MD contracted to cover the facility, instead of the physician who had treated her for many years (she saw her own specialists). The other concern of the family was that despite the patient having cardiac problems, including low blood pressure & a history of falling, her blood pressure was only checked once a month! When I questioned this, I was told that it was the normal procedure for this facility. I don't know what the Standard of Care for Assisted Living facilities is regarding checking vital signs, however, in a population with multiple health problems, who take a variety of medications, my view is that this is very inadequate. Regular blood pressure checks can prevent strokes, heart attacks & other cardiovascular events that can cause severe disabilities &/or death. If you choose this facility, I would suggest that you request the doctor order blood pressure checks, at least once a day.

This community is very updated from the ambiance to the computer system to the health and fitness of the residents. They do not have skilled nursing but offer good care services for this type of community. They try to keep the residents active and moving as long as the residents wants to participate. I would absolutely recommend Elmcroft to anyone.

Staff is caring and that gives me peace of mind knowing my dad is being looked after. They hired new personnel and and provide cleaning more than once a week

Sometimes I go down the hall and there are spills or skid marks from something. I have to dust my Mom's apartment. Mom says no one else does it. Everyone who works there is very nice and helpful.

Everything still good but we did have a day care giver change because one left for another job. [name removed] in admin has been great any time we've asked to speak with her regarding care updates and changes. Occasionally maintenance requests are handled slowly because they're not always available. The WOW Internet is not the best and has been down a few times which knocked out the TV and phone in Mom's room. The last time took 4 days to repair. I think the staff is terrific and really cares about the residents.

The people have been very helpful taking care of my sister. They are very friendly and have answered my questions as needed. She is happy with the attention she gets and enjoys the interaction with other residents.

Room, caring staff, activities, all great.,food is good with small variety. It is home like and smaller than most. Drawback: No RN on entire staff. No NP to come check on clients and write scripts when ill.

The staff is outstanding, and the in-house doctor is outstanding as well. The therapy is outstanding, and the care is excellent. Cleaning is great, and the apartment size is great. The pharmacy is also excellent.

My mom loves the activities and the staff. The downfall is the food. It was great when she first moved in, but the new management is making changes. According to my mom, the dining experience has diminished. There has been discussions of getting rid of the tablecloths and cloth napkins. The residents want to keep these things as it makes the dining area feel more upscale. As for the residents, they are very friendly and make the living situation a community. Overall my is very happy.

My only real complaint is about the food. Most meals are served cold and need to be sent back. I think they overcook vegetables to the point where are extremely soft and have probably lost most if not all of their nutrients. The bread is hard. The same meats are often served but are called different things. It seems like they try to be too fancy. At our age I think basic meals and what they are called are the best that can be served. At least you know what you are getting. You can never count on what the weekly menu says the meals will be. In the almost 3 weeks that I've been here I can honestly say I enjoyed only 2 main meals. A lot of people simply order off the alternate menu - pb&j or tuna sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs (which are just ok at best) or cottage cheese and peaches.

The staff is very friendly at The Pointe. The apartment is a good size with a large closet for some storage space. The A/C seems a little difficult to control because the settings are too high on the wall for mom to see. The bathroom sink is way too tall and she has to stand on something to use it, when she should not be climbing on anything. Unfortunately, most planned activities mention drinks or happy hour, which discourages mom from attending. While the interior Courtyard is lovely to look at, it is brutal in the hot summer months getting into the main building for meals, mail pick up and all activities. The sidewalk there includes a stretch of cement ramp that can be difficult to climb, and also when going downhill with her walker on days when she is hurting. We have been out of the facility a lot so she's not had a chance to talk to the kitchen staff to see if there is any possibility of making slight changes for her diabetes. Most of their meals raise her glucose level too high.

The staff is friendly and helpful. The apartments come in a variety of sizes. They were clean and freshly painted. The activities are varied and plentiful. The activity director is a treasure. The food is good and dining staff is polite.

Overall facilities very nice and clean. Beautiful sitting rooms in front of building. No "smells". Recently changed management on [date removed]. Hopeful that new management will address issues: Better training of care staff, more care staff on weekends with a management staff member on duty. Courtyard area in Memory Care comparable to area in assisted living side. More joint activities for both assisted and memory care. Food needs complete overhaul in Memory care. Add fresh produce and healthier options. Have silverware and cloth napkins and beverages set out prior to food coming out. Do not serve food which requires a knife since they are not provided. Overall care staff very friendly. Can be sedentary at times and not proactive. Sometimes need to be alerted about issues that are obvious.....accidents in chairs and on floor, residents slipping down in their chairs, residents removing clothing items.

Great for dementia patients who are able to be in activities

Nice place in the process of upgrading the place. Price is a little higher than normal. The only do assisted living and memory care. Not for us looking for independent living to later upgrade to assisted living.

Good- staff is always friendly. Not so great is the response time to get assistance. 911 got there quicker than the staff when help was needed at night. Food choices could be better. The written menu doesn't always correspond to the actual menu. Desserts are good Activities - ok. Haven't participated in many. Would be nice if non ambulatory patients were "picked" up in order to participate. Facilities- large rooms and balconies are very nice.

Everything was acceptable but we were looking for better outdoor spaces. Our tour rep was very kind and knowledgeable.

The staff is very caring and helpful. The food is also good but could use some more fresh produce. I believe it is a well run facility that strives to do their best and improve where lacking. Yes I would recommend it.

Overall a very nice clean facility with very friendly staff. She's in independent living 2 bed, 2 bath which is very spacious for her. Maintenance staff is prompt and helpful for any needs including TV, phone, repairs etc. The activity calendar is pretty full daily but she's not interested in most of it. However, the facility has rooms that private groups can get together and do whatever they want. The only complaint she continues to have is the taste of the food. She and others have monthly meetings with the kitchen staff on meal prep and menus. Seems to be getting better or she's just adapting, not sure. As for value, seems to be a good value based on other similar places that are much more.
