Not enough stimulating activities for memory care wing

Although my parent seems to be taken care of, they’re slightly under staffed for the amount of residents in the memory care unit. They also DO NOT have enough engaging activities especially for those residents who are in the early to mid stages of Alzheimer's/dementia. When the assisted living side has a big event, such as an entertainer, the memory care side doesn’t always get to take part. They miss out on many engaging activities. The activities gal on the memory side does a great job for what she can for the whole group but it’s those few people who can use more engagement who need more stimulation otherwise they’ll just sit around in their rooms watching tv. Place looks pretty but right now, not enough for the residents to do and not enough staff to manage them without having them sit in their chairs or in their rooms.

Be careful - never assume

Spring Arbor seems to be better than other places my family looked into - more people on staff, which is a big deal. But anyone looking for help for alzheimers need to face the reality that just because you lock them into the memory cottage and administer their medicines doesn't mean you're an expert on alzheimers. I've experienced CNAs treating my mother as if she had a proper working memory and problem solving skills due to their own lack of understanding or care. If you plan to put your mom here, have a very detailed careful conversation with the managers and check on her regularly. [Removed] happens in many subtle ways that add up over time.

It was considerably more clinical than the Courtyard in New Bern. The furnishing were more spartan. However, the staff was considerably more enthusiastic about helping their residents. They took me directly to the Memory Care area which is locked off from the rest of the area. There is also a walk, garden, outdoor activities area which is fenced off and connected to the Memory Care facility. It is probably 20 by 40 feet, but very nicely landscaped, with a nice walk path. There seemed to be a lot more emphasis on getting the residence to doing something (becoming more active). They can't have many patients (about 8 - 10) and many (if not all) were in the activities center. There were at least two nurses managing the area which was about the size of our living room. There were three of four other areas of similar size including a dining area. There are several residents walking around with walkers, but there were also several just sitting in a chair and day dreaming. The monthly cost is about $5K, but that includes all services. There is a small initial entrance fee, about $500.

Disheartened

We were impressed in the beginning, but now that mom has been there almost a month we are somewhat disheartened. Her room had not been vacuumed for the entire month because it was broken. The call button was being pushed but no help came for multiple hours at a time. The problem continued even though they did research the problem. Then 3 weeks later, we discovered the button only records calls if you hold the button down firmly for a period of time(although I pushed it the same way and sometimes it worked and some times not so much.) There are some very awesome people who work there, but there are also people who are always on their phone Facebook while residents in memory care meander around without support.

I toured this facility in search of a new home for my mother. It is in a nice, safe residential neighborhood and is very convenient to shopping, hospitals, and medical offices. It's appealing from the entrance. I walked in and saw several residents waiting as if they were going somewhere. They really didn't seem jovial. There wasn't anyone to greet me initially which made me question the organizational skills of the staff. Finally I was greeted by a very friendly person that I think was the director. She asked me some basic questions about my mother's needs and then we went on a tour. The facility was very clean and didn't smell. The decor was a little outdated. It was nice knowing that they provide furniture (or you can bring your own). I saw a couple of different rooms and they were spacious and in good shape. Some had a great view. The number of daily activities seemed less than other facilities I visited but the menu looked good. There are a couple of places for residents to socialize but didn't see that happening. The prices seemed very reasonable but I felt that the ?director didn't know all of the aspects of what type of care the facility offered (regarding medication management). What made me turn away is that this director couldn't keep my name straight via email, and rather than showing interest in getting to know my mother, she (on multiple occasions) focused on getting the community fee. She seemed to be all about the money, not my mom. Just got a bad vibe from her which set the tone for what probably is a great facility.

It's more expensive than where he is now but my daughter said if we can get all the kids together we may be able to make it happen. It looks lovely and my daughter says it's beautiful, but beautiful things don't necessarily mean people get good care. You want them to care for your loved one like you would but you can really guarantee anything.

Make sure that you reach out to the staff to get information because nothing is volunteered to the family. There is no sharing of information on how your loved one is doing. Make sure to stay involved and be an advocate. They also have 19 Covid cases in the facility as well. They are still allowing family to go in even with these positive cases.

If I had to do it all over again, I would choose another facility.

I'm not very happy with the place. We had to place our loved one at the beginning of Covid, so we didn't get to tour or check it out very thoroughly. We also had to make a quick decision and didn't have a lot of options. When I go and visit, the cushions are dirty where people drop stuff. Our loved one's clothes are dirty, and it looks like she hasn't showered. She doesn't even have a shower in her bathroom. They take each resident on certain days to the shower. She has clothes, makeup, and other things that have come up missing. The furniture and décor is old and outdated, and they don't let your loved one bring their own things in memory care. It's just really depressing in there. I know the girls work hard, and they're nice people. But they're not really doing anything to help the residents. I don't know if they have too much on their plates. There seems to be a minimum amount of staff, and I know they've gone through a lot of turnover of managers and nurses. I don't really see many activities going on. Maybe 1 out of 20 times I go there they'll be coloring or painting. I see activities all the time in assisted living, but not in the memory care cottages. I've read so much on this disease, and I know it's important to keep their minds busy. And that's just not happening here, even now that things have opened up after Covid restrictions. They're charging quite a bit of money for memory care, and I just don't think it's worth it because they don't keep the residents' minds busy. And my loved one is really declining since she's moved here. She says the food is the same thing all the time, and she's lost weight. We're torn about whether or not to try to move her. Most days she says she's comfortable here, and we don't want a change to completely disrupt her. But if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't have put her here.
