The staff is friendly. It's an older facility, toilets are really too low for adults. It could use a facelift. I don't have anything to compare them to. Anything updated will also cost more. It's a matter of personal taste and what can work for the individual. Of course, I never wanted to have to put my loved one in any facility.

Review for Spring Arbor of Apex

We met some nice people at SA. The one thing we were disappointed in was the lack of activities once [name removed] left the Wednesday after Easter. [name removed] was great in memory care with mom. After she left they never replaced her and it seemed like they were sitting in front of the TV the majority of the time. There seemed to be a difference of opinion about whether they were going to fill that position.

Small apartment-bedroom consists of one full bed, my electric piano, a small closet, and some wall paintings. Hall entrance into small kitchen area with bathroom on one side & kitchen items on the other. Very small living room with 2 matching chairs, living room table with plants atop & beautiful cabinet containing valuable gifts over the years. Large window behind sofa.

Care provided for resident

Quality of care varies with available aides…some are there just for the paycheck and others truly care about the residents. When problems are brought to the attention of the Patient Care Coordinator, feedback is always promised but rarely given. Apartments need to be cleaned more often and trash emptied more often.

Things you should know

I will say I think there is room for improvement. I thought the activities they planned for the memory care patients during my Moms stay was lacking and looked better on paper. Also, having carpet in the common area or anywhere in the memory care side is a mistake due to incontinence. Being that memory care is right next to the front office, perhaps that is the reason for the strong air freshener you're hit with when you walk in the front door of the facility. I also think that the staff should be pushing water intake because that is essential to dementia patients but of course that would mean they would have to see to toilet needs more often. This is just a few things I saw that could use improvement. There are others. There was some confusion as to whether we needed to supply my Moms linens. The admissions office said no, that it would be provided. The staff in the memory care section said we did. They should be on the same page.

Feedback on Waterstone

Waterstone is a beautiful facility with a lot of potential. During our time there, they were still refining their processes and routines. The aides and staff were kind, attentive, and eager to help, though additional training in memory care would have been beneficial. The facility itself was well-maintained, offering a clean and welcoming environment, along with good food and engaging activities. One challenge we encountered was the required use of a specific pharmacy, which added an unexpected cost of $[removed] per month. Before Waterstone, all of my mother’s prescriptions were fully covered by Medicare at no cost to her. Additionally, the pharmacy’s limited hours—Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM—meant that prescriptions called in after hours might not be filled until Monday evening. Since Waterstone requires all medications to go through their pharmacy system, this occasionally caused delays

Overall. Med staff/caregivers were great. It is a much older population that we expected. The admin staff pushed her to eat in the dining room. There were several times where they said she had to. No other option. When she didn't, she didn't get a meal. It took us a few weeks to get them to leave that piece alone. Unfortunately, my mom just wasn't happy.

Would not recommend. Room for improvement.

I actually lost my mother there [date removed] . She was doing well & to my shock she fell in the night on a Saturday fracturing her hip. I blame lack of care & supervision by the night/weekend staffing. The last few weeks of her life were very disturbing & surprising to me. Most of the personnel were ok, food not that great & a few had bad attitudes. The way I see it with my extreme "facility" experience residents are numbers filling the space. I found a few staffing that truly seemed to care. I would not take my mother there again. Would not recommend. Room for improvement.

Lovely facility, but appears understaffed

My family member was in this facility for a couple months for respite care. The facility itself is large, clean, and appears very nice, but the concerns are that there is not sufficient staffing for the care of the elderly, especially in memory care. If residents are in their rooms, they are only checked on every two hours. This is not enough for a dementia patient, as bathroom supervision was crucial for my family member. Regular cleaning of patient rooms and bathrooms was also insufficient, and weekend staffing was especially poor. There were multiple occasions when there were dementia patients in living areas alone in groups and there appeared to be no one on the floor to supervise them. The majority of these people are fall risks. The appearance of this facility is impressive, but overall patient care, supervision, and room cleanliness didn't please me.

The best of our options

They seem to do everything that needs to be done but sometimes have trouble following through with things we ask them to do. No complaints about safety or adequate care, though. The fact that they accept medicaid after 2 years was a primary factor in our choice.

Pros and cons

Overall experience: ok, a lot of turnover... currently there is uncertainty, apparently they are under investigation, facility could be closed sometime this year. Friendliness: very friendly and pleasant staff Quality of care: overall good care... I think the more the family is visible and present, it impacts the overall care of the resident (I am there all the time) Food: mediocre at best... Activities: they seem to have a good amount of activities (my father does not attend) Value for the money: I think it should be based on individual needs-... I feel like I pay a lot for the room itself, my dad is very still independent and so he does not demand a whole lot of care.

Our Experience at Waterstone

Our main and largest problem at Waterstone on Augusta was communication with the staff. When I say staff, I mean the upper level staff not the caregiver or regular facility staff. All of the assistants and servers, etc. were extremely helpful, but only to the point that they could be. The upper level staff would not return phone calls, emails or texts. On two occasions, the employee left Waterstone and we continued sending them texts and finally called the front desk to find out. They had been gone for up to two weeks. This was unacceptable. They also brought my mother-in-law food to her room but no one checked to see if she ate it. Again, unacceptable. Overall, the staff were nice friendly and so on, but very seldom did they follow up on what they said they were going to do. Even the bookkeeper was the same. I called her three times and left a message every day. She never answered it. When I went up there, I asked to see her and they said no. I said no is not acceptable and I need to see her now. She came out and I asked her what was going on. She explained that she'd been busy blah blah blah. Again, unacceptable. I asked her to itemize the invoices, she did not. The fact that we lived a 4 hour drive away was a problem that they did not seem to want to address. We could not go by there daily. We were up there as much as we could be, but that was a couple to three days a week. We spent an excess of $[removed] driving back-and-forth in 6 weeks. Our other family members are physically unable to be of much help. For some reason, the staff did not understand this or the fact that we could not be there like a lot of people could be. My mother-in-law passed away in July, after a major stroke she was found unresponsive in her room. In hindsight, my wife wishes that she had rented an apartment. However, we did not know that my mother-in-law was going to have another stroke in July and pass away a week later.

Make multiple trips for visits of you can.

Be sure to visit in the morning and late afternoon. Very different feeling and people working. As with everywhere, you will find really good caregivers that are good at their job and others that probably should not be in this career field. There's been a lot of change over just in the four months we have been here in leader ship and staff. I truly believe they're trying to fix some of the issues that they have had at this facility. Making an effort gives hope that they will be able to staff positions with the right people.
