A Place for Mom has scored Spectrum Retirement with 9 out of 10 using our proprietary review score based on 948 reviews in the last 2 years. Over all time, Spectrum Retirement has 3,222 reviews with an average "overall experience" of 4.3 out of 5.
I have a family member living there and has been there for about 6 months. At first the place was pretty good. Now however, things have really gone down hill. The food that is served is terrible. The food come cold, not what was ordered, or not at all. We have complained numerous times to the chef and building director but nothing has changed. The level of care on the assisted living side is terrible. The care takers never seem to be around and when they are, they are usually on their phones. My mom has told me several stories of residents defecating and urinating on themselves and the care takers leave them. The sales people will tell you anything and promise you everything to get you to sign. Beware and shop around.

visited Westerville Senior Living (WSL) late in 2019, and was assured of the great care he would receive and had a chance to evaluate costs. I knew at the time that I would need to bring my father from Dayton to Westerville to be evaluated so a level of care could be determined. The cost estimate I was given at the time seemed reasonable. During the evaluation where many, many questions were asked about my father and his care, it was determined he would only need Level 1 care. This was in January 2020. Fast-forward to March when we finally were able to get him moved in. Thousands of dollars were spent for the move, deposits and more. Within days, my father become very isolated with very little care for him. He would state no one would see him for many hours. After consultation with the nursing and management staff and other hard financial choices, we agreed to move him to memory care, where I was told he would go to Level 3 care. The concern was at the beginning of the pandemic, my father could not socialize with the staff or other residents, which caused depression and anxiety for my father. I believe without the pandemic, he would not be in the current level care he is now. But we made the choice - and you and I met and signed the forms for this. Now - I am told he is in Level 5 care. No one - I repeat - no one - alerted me to this change of care that was needed and/or required. We have the ability to use the VA for assistance, but the VA was told WSL was taking care of it all. Of course they wanted to take care of it so that they could now charge an extra 1000.00 a month. He went from Level 1 to Level 5 in 3 months. How is this possible? Either the company is purposefully baiting elderly clients and families to relocate there - and then jacking up the prices... OR... they have a severe deficiency in adequately and accurately assessing future residents. I truly believe it may be a combination of both. What is worse, I believe because Spectrum Retirement Communities / Westerville Senior Living is not able to accept new residents (or no one wants to move at this time due to Covid) the company is finding ways to increase the rates of current residents. That would be truly despicable and needs a full investigation. This is unacceptable. What infuriates me the most is that this is all done during a health pandemic, which highly limits the choices that my family can make to safely relocate my father. I would look for another facility.

Very bad experience with Mother-in-Law in "Memory Care". That's in quotes "" because they are NOT trained to give proper Memory Care/Alzheimer's help, they want you to be understanding and professional but they are NOT. MiL lived there for 5 years. When she became incontinent, the staff called me 4x/week saying "uh, she pooped on the floor again, you need to help us here! uh I'm having to clean this up again. She needs you. You need to help us here!" That's what we pay you $5k-$6k then $7k/month for !!! We found a better, more reasonable place that SPECIALIZES in dementia/Altzheimer's and i gave HighPointe notice on 3 different occassions that we were moving here out on 9/28. Well, guess what? on 10/2 they took a $7k payment for October out of her checking account! They say "well, you never gave us a WRITTEN notice!" We've been fair and understanding with them but they don't respond in a similar fashion. Stay away from HighPointe for Memory Care - it's NOT good and it's VERY expensive.

Horrible experience. Took Dad out of facility within 30 days. There is a reason why they only have 8 patients and 18 rooms. Some staff are mean and work at a prison also and treated Dad like a prisoner. NO TLC what so ever. Lied to about several facts upon entry. DO NOT USE THIS PLACE IF FOR YOUR LOVED ONES IF YOU CARE AT ALL. THEY DONT DESERVE EVEN ONE STAR EXCEPT FOR CLEANLINESS.

Facility was clean but the only thing I can say good about it. The staff was mediocre at best. The last review stated that there was 7 activity staff but this is not true. Apartments are over priced and the facility is riddled with repair problems. Beautiful as it may be the value is just not there. Since Mom has been there the nursing staff has been lacking. Upper management in the nursing department lacks follow thru and Medication techs and Resident techs lack compassion and expertise to handle the patients at the facility. I'm looking to move Mom soon!

The management at spectrum‘s, Park Meadows is completely nonresponsive. This was a terrific senior living establishment until January 1 of 2018 when new management Took over. Every department has suffered, food service, kitchen and dining room are the worst. Residents have commented, offered suggestions, and complained steadily this whole calendar year, With no result. Management has consistently shown no interest in making improvements. Rates continue to go up while Quality goes down. I have made a lot of friends here, and the residents are wonderful, none of us deserve to be treated this way

I am the caretaker and only child of my mother who is 94 years old. My mother is in the memory care section. Before you dismiss her, let me tell you that she has mild dementia and is lucid 80% of the time. I am very involved in making sure that the extremely expensive services that I pay for are carried out and performed on my mother. [Name removed] has been in this facility for approximately 2 months. The services I have contracted to have performed are as follows: oral medication dispensed daily, Macular Degeneration and glaucoma eye drops given 4 multiple times thru out the day, and help with showering twice weekly setup for Tuesday and Friday's. I always ask my mother if she is getting the care that is documented in the care plan. She has told me on more than one occasion that the showers have not been given to her. On Saturday, [date removed], I visited my mother and contacted a caregiver in the memory area. I had him log in to the software that the facility uses that document the daily service that needs to be performed on all the members of the memory care section. We slowly went backwards within the software to try and find out if my mother was getting the showers required. At that time we saw in the software that on Tuesday [name removed], a shower was not performed and NO entry was processed into the software. Proof of at least one shower not given since then. This let my mother go almost 5 to 6 days without a shower. Roll forward now to Friday, August [date removed]. I contacted my mother and asked her if she received her shower today. This was at 4:00PM when I asked. She said NO that she has been waiting all day and even asked a caretaker to give her one and no one showed back up that day to perform the shower. I immediately contacted the staff at the enclave. I called and asked for the director of memory care, [name removed]. I was told she left for the day. I was then put thru to a salesman called [name removed]. Why a salesman....I have no idea!! I explained to him that my mother had not received the contracted shower for the day and I want to know why. He proceeded to contact someone in memory care. He then got back on the phone and told me my mother was already given a shower for the day and that my mother was now coming back from happy hour. I told him that I just spoke to my mother and that she had not attend so called "Happy Hour" and that she did NOT receive A SHOWER. Needless to say, I was getting very angry that I was being lied to. [Name removed] then put me thru to a caregiver named Krystal whom proceeded again to tell me a shower was given to my mother at noon time. The software showed where a caregiver named "[name removed]" gave to it her after lunch. Also, [name removed] decided to use the "memory card".....just like using the "race card" by telling me that my mother has memory issues and that she probably forgot about her shower being given to her. That comment put my blood pressure the roof! Yes, blame it on my mother! So in all good detective work, I drove up to the enclave. I was greeted in memory care by a caregiver named "[name removed]". She immediately told me that she talked to my mother and was going to give my mother a shower after dinner that night. She also told me that a shower was not given to my mother even though the software had false statements saying the care was performed by this [name removed] person. [Name removed] also proceeded to tell me that she has caught [name removed] falsifying the logs on many occasions in the past. This [name removed], logged into the software, and falsely entered that she performed a shower for my mother. Upon entering my mother’s room, no wet towels or wet shower area was present. That shower area had not seen water in days. By falsifying the shower, this is a "theft of service" and "elder abuse". I contacted the MCSO sheriff on [date removed]. I filed a police report and a complaint against the Enclave. I signed a contract and I pay an exorbitant amount of money to have my mother cared for. Trust now has been broken and I now must find another facility to care for her. The MCSO report number is [removed]. [name removed] has stated to me that she has caught [name removed] falsifying services many times in the past. What other caregiver is cooking the books? What other services are being falsified...drugs not given, care not given. This is stealing at the very least! Are other families having the services not performed? This is a serious situation.

Beware. My grandparents lived here but after my grandmothers hospitalization they refused to let her return. So a word to the wise...find somewhere else that allows people to live there through the end of their life. If your loved one becomes ill this place will likely kick them out. Even though they wouldn’t let her return they were sure happy to take an additional 30 days rent which as of today they’ve refused to refund our family for. The nurses and aides are very kind but the executive management lacks empathy and compassion. My grandmother only had days left and would have been going back there to live her last few days on earth beside my grandfather with the assistance of private duty nurses and hospice - executive management here denied them of this. If you are looking to place your loved one in a place they can stay the remainder of their life look elsewhere. Thanks for making the last few days of my grandmothers life a scattered mess as we scrambled to find somewhere peaceful for her to pass.

I toured here in the memory care wing, and overall, I just did not feel it would be appropriate for my loved one. My loved one is more in-between care needs, and I felt that this community was for individuals who were more severely advanced than she. I just felt that it would not be a great fit.

We moved my mother to High Pointe in June, at first we thought it was a great move. She quickly went down hill, they had her meds wrong even though the care providers thought something was suspicious. They were not able to meet her memory care needs. At first we were told by John that we might have to move her to memory care, but something to look at later on down the road (during the same meeting he confided in us that the place was run poorly but they were trying to fix that). Just a couple days later, they called us in a panic that we needed to move her to memory care asap and we needed a 24x7 nurse until we could get her in. We moved her in, but she barely lasted a day. By the morning she had become so irate that she actually broke open the 2nd story window and was trying to jump! Let me just repeat that, a frail 75 year old woman broke open their window and tried to jump! At that point we had her moved up to a hospital in the Springs, and that's when the communication really broke down. The hospital told us that High Pointe wasn't accepting her back, and I was trying to contact the office manager to figure out her final bill. They never returned my calls. We secured another facility, and when we moved her out, they told us they had never rejected her, just that they were planning to go up over the next weekend to evaluate her. Well they never told us that, or anyone at the facility in the Springs. Don't mind the plan, but when the hospital is discharging her, we needed to know that. We moved her out, I asked for a final bill. Nothing, no response, no returning of phone calls, even went in once. They called us in October to notify us we had an outstanding balance, but had never sent an invoice, nothing. Bottom line, the place is nice, but it's a façade. They really weren't a memory care facility that could handle my Mom. Wish they would have told us up front, that in some cases they aren't equipped to handle difficult memory care cases, but they took us on a two month painful roller coaster that costs us money and time. If your loved one has memory care concerns, I would find a facility that is equipped. Instead of them calling us in a panic to come help, the new facility lets us know she was having issues. Instead of letting Mom get out of hand, they are trained to de-escalate situations and redirect them. I get it, Mom is a tough case, but be warned, this place will not be able to cope.

Three Oaks Assisted Living and Memory Care in Cary, IL

I chose this place for my mom originally because the location was convenient, the building is beautiful, the food was fantastic, the rooms are nice, and the staff was wonderful. It would’ve been great for her, but unfortunately for both of us we had a horrible experience. The nurse from Three Oaks originally came to my mother’s home in Chicago to evaluate her to see if she would be eligible for their establishment. I told her up front that she was rejected from another assisted living facility because she needs extra care and I was continuously told it would be “no problem”. The nurse told me she would be eligible, so we made the move from Chicago and a day and a half later after moving her in, they were having problems. I was getting calls all the time saying that she had fallen out of bed or something else bad had happened. I had to go out of town and they told me that I would need to hire a live-in because they did not evaluate her properly and she would need more help than what they could provide. That was costing me $190 a day! Even after hiring the live-in, she still had to rely on the facility to help with my mom! I had to pay for her food and for her sleeping quarters because they would not help furnish a spot for her to sleep. My mom was only at Three Oaks for 2 weeks and there were nothing but problems, so I found another place for her to go. There is way too much miscommunication going on here.
