A Place for Mom has scored Spectrum Retirement with 9 out of 10 using our proprietary review score based on 942 reviews in the last 2 years. Over all time, Spectrum Retirement has 3,301 reviews with an average "overall experience" of 4.3 out of 5.
Many promises were made when we signed on to the facility >We were promised a welcoming committee to help mom get acquainted with the facility >Promised entertainment frequently >Promised room and bathroom would be assessed and cleaned daily if needed >Promised scheduled showers >Medications were frequently misplaced >Service in dining room was poor and food was cold. I found we had to stay on top of the care of mom or it would not be done. We moved mom out after 6 months, she deserved better. Staff were very friendly, but not enough staff to complete care assigned.

I had a family member in Memory Care, who had been deemed incompetent. Resident has a court appointed guardian. There was a incident of resident trying to get out locked door. Guardian received call from fire chief, facility wanting to take resident to Emergency Room for psych evaluation. Resident was taken to ER without permission from guardian. The evaluation was negative. When resident was returned to facility, family member was told by DON that resident could not return to facility. Stated, "he is not wanted here." Police was called to take resident to jail. Facility was told they could not take resident to jail. I would like to encourage Administration to read and learn federal and state Resident Rights. Consequence to facility when violated. A thirty day written notice with reason for discharge must be given. Permission was not given by guardian to take resident to Emergency Room. This is only a few of violations that occurred.

The care and service did not live up to the sales pitch. We were told that memory care was their speciality and that their staff was highly trained to care for dementia residents. They requested a review from us a week into our mothers’s stay which after the first week was very good. We left a glowing review. However, after about a month, everything went severly downhill. Care declined and neglect ensued. Complaints were ignored. Within, a few short months they allowed our mother to become so severly impacted in her bowels that she became septic and required a hospitalization. This also led to the placement of a foley catheter to which they upcharged an additional $[removed]/mo for increased care (a jump of 4 levels of care). Then, within days notified us that she was no longer suitable as a resident in their memory care facility and gave us 14 days to remove her belongings and relocate her. Despicable! I would not recommend this facility to my worst enemies.

There is so much staff turnover that the place is run inefficiently. The bookkeeping system is nearly nonexistent. It has taken me up to 3 mos to get reimbursed for a wrongly charged meal. Housekeeping is a joke; apartments aren’t cleaned as often as the lease says they’re supposed to be cleaned. My 3rd floor patio reeks of dog ?? from the 1st floor neighbor below me. Management is ineffective in getting pet owners to clean after their pets. Common areas smell of dog ?? and spilled food, or strong disinfectant to mask the odor. The new Exec Director is THE WORST. She’s been there about 1 month and thinks she knows everything, when she can’t even locate an inventory sheet of items provided upon move in. My advice if you live here: keep good notes and copies of all documents. You’ll definitely need them to prevent being accused of eating meals you didn’t order, having extra cable boxes and remotes for tv’s you don’t have, and for not giving 30 days notice, when actually I gave 45!

At one time the community was working for my parents but as time went by and lack of employees to work the various positions within the facility, the food and support began to show signs of decline. Menus were changed to food that my parents to get at fast food restaurants and table service was non existent. Food was set up buffet style and they constantly ran out of food. Housecleaning and laundry service took forever to complete, well past the time agreed to in the residential agreement. Complaints were filed with the owners and nothing was ever addressed. It's a sad situation for a nice facility.

They’ve got my mom wearing multiple diapers at one time. She has been sent to Mercy Hospital ER four times since she’s been there and nobody has ever witnessed her being aggressive. They have her on seven different mood altering drugs. I also paid March bill in full but they tacked on almost $2K at the end of the month.

There was no activity director and residents couldn't go outside because there was not enough staff. I told them I wanted to take him out of their facility after he was there 1 month and they said I had to give them a 30 day notice ..so he stayed another 30 days and then they kept his [removed] dollars...so wrong When I called the head person about 5 times and left a message, they never called me back.

If I could give it a negative rating, I would. My mother-in-law was in the Memory Care Unit for just under 3 months, and it was not a good experience for her, my husband (her son), or me. She was not properly screened prior to entering, and my information was not relayed from the sales department to the nurses. Therefore it was an inappropriate admission and she had to make a disruption move to another facility in a short amount of time, and her dementia dramatically increased to the point of dying from it a month later. Before entering, we were reassured that the medical staff could prescribe needed psychotropic medication and we found out that this wasn't the case. The staff had very limited therapeutic approaches and could not deal with my mother-in-law in her advanced late stage dementia, finally resulting in us hiring an outside caregiver to assist her in the Memory Care Unit. This place seems to only be able to deal with very quiet, passive dementia. The atmosphere of Cedar Lake's Memory Care Unit was very poor. It isn't homey at all, especially in the evening when the residents sit against a wall with a large table in the middle (that was used by the activities people), watching tv, with maybe some aides also there looking at their phones. It had a very institutional feel. Some staff did not bother to hide their displeasure or anger. I initially was quite impressed to hear that some Cedar Lake staff had been there since the opening, but I found out that that wasn't important and that even agency fill in staff can provide a higher quality of care. There were some staff who were friendly. However, there were some who constantly gave us scowling or angry looks. I can understand being distressed at the thought of being lied to and giving false information in order to gain admission, but even if that was true, the looks were quite unprofessional. And we never misled anyone at Cedar Lake about my mother-in-law. There was no questioning of us or interview with her to provide updated information about her dementia and behavior when she entered Cedar Lake months after the initial screening and the sales person apparently didn't pass along my updated information to the nurses. We had no idea that they would be so unable to cope with her. There was a complaint made by the independent outside caregiver of an aide who roughly transferred my mother-in-law. Medication that was vital and was on an increasing schedule was not properly given. We know this as the bottle was given back to us upon discharge and there were too many left, according to our records. I observed very little interaction, much less warm, friendly interaction between the residents and staff. As for the food, my mother-in-law was on a special diet and my husband observed that it wasn't always followed. The activities were probably the very best part of Cedar Lake's Memory Care Unit. The Activities people were happy, friendly, engaging people who provided appropriate and entertaining activities. And because there is the attached Assisted Living program with special activities, there was some crossover that was good for my mother-in-law. I would not recommend Cedar Lake Memory Care Unit to anyone except possibly for a married couple where one spouse needs Assisted Living and the other Memory Care and they wanted this specific location in Lake Zurich, such as being extremely close to Hawthorn Woods. And in that case, I would warn that just because the person with dementia doesn't have any "behavior problems" now, that doesn't guarantee that he or she won't in the future as the dementia worsens and then the couple would have to move again or split up.

They are short staffed. Wait time after pushing button is 30 to 60 minutes. You could be dead by then. I took my mother to my home after 2 weeks. It's beautiful but that's where it ends. To be fair, I think they are all the same. Better option for us was hiring home instead to come to my home.

I would NOT recommend this facility. Dining is a disorganized mess. There is no clear process to order and be served. The food takes too long to receive. It's served cold. The facility assesses the residents based on the level of care the facility can provide with their staff shortages, not based on the level of care of the resident needs. The housekeeping is nonexistent and we were told we would need to hire someone to clean. Communication - it's hard to keep track of who does what with so much turnover. The facility is not ADA compliant. The rooms have very slippery floors. The doors are too heavy to open by anyone who has strength issues. The window blinds are too heavy to use - the windows are difficult to open. The temperature controls can't be seen by persons with sight issues. The staff refuses to assist with these things.

The sales person [name removed] is great they accessed [name removed] before he went in and said he was a level 3. We told them that he was incontient and needed to be helped and reminded several times to go to the bathroom That he needed assistance in bathing dressing and personal hygiene when he was getting accessed However when we got him there none of those things were done. [name removed] often was drenched in urine and worse. They left his soiled clothes sit days in his room and the smell was awful He always is unshaved and I don't know how often he is bathed His bed was very often left soaked in urine and the toilet left soiled I spend at least a half hour cleaning up his room and getting the smell out. They leave his soiled pull-ups there for days I finally bought a enclosed trash can and ziplocks for this and it's helping When I talked to the staff about this [name removed] the head coordinator acted like we were a pest and moved him from a level 3 to a 5. Greatly increasing the price He still is not shaved and groomed even though we pay for it Some of the helpers are very nice and do there best however some are very lazy and do nothing Found out just yesterday there was a problem from Friday regarding his Seroquel (mood stabilizer)and instead of taking care of it with the V A. They let him go without his nite time meds from Friday through Monday They do not communicate with us at all It's a beautiful place but it is totally absurd that they don't take care of their memory patients and communicate with their families

The facility is fresh and lovely but it is owned by a for-profit company and that usually means it is focused on income and not resident well being. The staff in memory care is not well trained for dementia residents. They lack the skills needed to engage them socially. Families need to watch the room and interactions. I saw staff to staff and residents to residents or residents to no one. Training is not a strength of for profit

Nothing positive to share! I lived there for two years and met some nice people, and other tenants. The food was always average to lousy, the staff changed constantly in all departments and rarely were the outings anything to plan and count on. I have come to realize that Las Soleras has a bad reputation in Santa Fe and will have to work hard to turn that around, good luck!

Shiny as heck on the outside and the sales people are super SALES people. Although there are a select few staff members who are amazing, they are woefully under staffed and/or under supervised in all areas. My mom has suffered theft on several occasions, the response times to her requests for help are slow and their accounting of it is shady at best, tonight she waited 2 hours for her meal. On two occasions when I've gone to have lunch with her they ran out of plates. On both occasions the server said she would "go back and wash some." And then proceeded to come back with "clean" plates (um health codes?). The beds aren't made as scheduled...so many other areas that could be discussed. There is a new director who is allegedly working to pull them out of the mess that The Enclave has become. There is nothing in this review that I have not shared directly with her.

I don't even know where to begin, we moved my mother there in Nov 2022. We were sold by the sales people a place that had consistent long term staff, great caregivers and the assurance that all my moms needs could be met. It wasn't long before we had medication mix ups such as not receiving her meds( and her being made to feel she just forgot that they were given) and being lied to about it then literally having to go over late at night and catching the person just taking the meds up when I arrived on site, the running out of meds and not having consistently, so unacceptable. My mom took a couple falls and never once did head nurse once on site personally come to check on her. Numerous times my mother who was oxygen depended was left with no oxygen at all and thank god we had placed a camera in her room due to suggestion from nurse [name removed], that we were the ones to catch it. There is many more things but not enough space. Independent living is good but not assisted.
