Very disappointed

The reason that I have scored most things so low is because we pay $[removed] extra per month for extra help. My friend only gets 1 shower per week and if he's not there and ready at his time, he doesn't get one until the next week. One week they were late and came in at 8:30pm to give him a shower and he was already asleep. His meds have been missed and given wrong several times and once ran out without refilling. This last week they gave him his as needed only meds for several days when they weren't needed resulting in him having a terrible bout of diarrhea which he was left one night overnight without cleaning him up and the next day he was left for hours. There are many cockroaches in his room. I asked and was told an exterminator would be called, but he still has roaches, so I don't think anyone ever came. The food is made from very low quality foods like canned soups, the cheapest white bread for sandwiches, processed meats and cheeses. There are no snacks available very often. I saw a snack cart one day and the workers were grabbing all of the good snacks and eating them right there. They run out of things often like tea, lemonade, toilet paper. There was no hot water for the first month he was there and he went the first whole month without a shower!! He wouldn't take a cold one. Someone came inside his room and went through his wallet and took pictures of his credit and debit cards and then started buying all kinds of stuff using his cards. The barber charges $25 for a haircut. I could go on and on. I think I was generous in my scores actually. It is really a shame that these elderly people are not taken better care of. Most are afraid to speak up about anything because they are afraid they will get treated badly if they say anything. It is really sad.

Sodalis was a gem compared to [facility name removed]. I have no idea how you gave them an award. It must have been rigged! The management at Sodalis accused me of falling on purpose and of recording everything. Both of them were not true, that's why I left.

Memory care unit at Sodalis

My loved one was in the memory care unit. I don't know if Sodalis still does that. After the fact, it seems to me like their heart wasn't really in the memory care business. My opinion of the assisted living portion of sodalis would have been dramatically different. If they had the same effort on memory care as they did for the ALF, I think I would have been happy. I did not know how badly my loved one needed to be somewhere else, until after we had to move her out. Nothing further seems appropriate.

A very forgettable experience - do not recommend.

The intake paperwork went smoothly. The staff are friendly when available. Approximately 2 weeks after my mothers arrival, I visited my mother and found her unable to speak. She was still in bed at 2:00pm and had an untouched breakfast and lunch plate sitting by her bed. No one had checked on my mother, dressed or attended to her needs. She was taken to the hospital and didn't recover from her stroke. Another day I found a resident lying in the floor calling for help for over 20 minutes. I helped her into her chair and finally found assistance. Very affordable if you want to expedite your loved ones passing.

Disappointed

(staff and management were incredibly difficult to work with. They did change out the women in charge which needed to happen, but the replacement was totally disengaged. Entire staff struggled with minimal communication). Additionally the doctors that they brought in to care for the patients were atrocious (rude & uncommunicative). Hospice was our saving grace. Until they change their management there (in my opinion) it is not a good place. When you are leaving a loved one in their care, especially if you cannot do daily visits, communication is critical, and they don't have a structure in place. [name removed] at Sodalis, the person a potential client would meet with, is outstanding. I don't think if you met with her, that, in its current state, anyone would realize the struggles ahead.

Horrible Experience

Sodalis improperly expelled my father from the facility and said he could not come back. They then lied and said we took him out. They did not follow their own protocol. After contacting corporate and the district manager, we were finally promised a refund. When I called to check on the check, I was immediately told the post office returned it a while back. Someone said it was probably because if the Post Office recognized it was a check then they would return it if his mail was on forwarding. He then promised to mail it to me directly. It never came. I called again and left a message. I never received a return call. I called again this year and left a message and still no return call. Very upsetting and disappointing.

Nice facility, but not well managed. Not as clean, including bathrooms, slow to wash laundry, my husband sat in wet pull-ups often and aids were supposed to be checking on him for that. Aids could use better training and availability of staff was very limited. Husband was left in bed all day most days. The activities people worked hard to provide good services to residents. With additional trained and caring aids, it could be better. when I sat with the director of nursing, (2. Weeks in) we developed a plan of care to improve my husbands care, but nothing changed. By week 4, I decided to move him to a different community. As we were exiting, a new due of nursing and exec director were hired. They were working on aids, but it takes time to find and hire qualified people. If they rebuild their team, it'll be a great community. I was paying for his care and ended up doing most of it myself.

Oversight Required

You need to be visible and let them know that someone is paying attention. We were very disappointed in the level of service. We happened to stop by unannounced and found our loved one unable to speak. She had had a stroke, and no one there was aware of it. That morning they had dropped a breakfast tray off for her. Later they came back and dropped off a lunch tray. But non one had gotten her up or truly checked on her. She had a fever and a UTI, and no one recognized any of the symptoms. Due to that, she then had the stroke. So we moved her out as soon as she got out of the hospital.

Unorganized

Our experience was in a difficult transition period for them because of turnover in the management. We were told they could assist us with her insulin maintenance and that was not true because of a change in Medicare coverage. We were paying this hefty fee but we were the ones who were doing the care. We found prescription pills in the hallways and someone else prescription in her room so that was last straw for us.

Our families experience

Since they have brought on a new manager [name removed] the quality of the care has improved tremendously, the care our loved one is receiving is 100%. [name removed] is on top of any questions or concerns we have and is very approachable. The meals however are very bad - they could improve on the healthiness of the meals they provide - we do not always see much fruits or salads, it seems like its a lot of cards and extremely salty.

tour review

Our family had an in person tour and we just knew right away this was not the place for our loved one, the memory care patients were moaning and screaming for help.

Room for Great Improvement

Had my parents in there for a few months and have moved them into another facility. Several new hires and staffing was not well suited, some very dedicated but just needed further time to improve and work as a team. Food, medical / medicines were all given at same time in cafeteria and if were not there then did not get medication. Food was very bland and not very good, very unappealing overall. Initially no activities director due to new staff, so no set program with many filling in trying while searching for director.

Tour experience

I was very turned off by the sales lady who was giving us the information. She would not stop talking about her own personal situation with her boyfriend and I found it to be very unprofessional.

Poor at best

Very short staffed and have a hard time getting anyone to respond to resident calls for help. When they do respond they never get back with the residents with answers to questions. After hours NONODY answers the phone and impossible to get a callback when you leave a voice message ( your only option when they don’t answer. Met with “new”director and was assured these and more problems would be addressed. Most if not all have not been addressed.

Dont recommend

This community was under construction when I was there. My room did not have a lock, and they were very disorganized. I would not recommend this community to anyone else. They promised me a refund due to the fact that I never moved in and I only got a partial refund.

My review of Elmcroft of Austin

When our family had the in person tour, due to the big Texas freeze they were going through a giant renovation. When we walked in it smelled like someones take out food. The memory care unit had story time going on, and they were all just huddled in the hallway, there was no stimulation or activity. The assisted living side was very nice, and it just seemed like they gave the dementia residents the bad side of the community. No very welcoming on that side.

Management of staff duties

Not sure how often they change the filters in the room for the air/ heating. Noticed it was on cool but didn't feel cool. Opened the door took out the filter . It had 1/2 inch of dust. Couldn't even see the holes in the filter. It was solid dust. Cleaned it ourselves. My father has a problem with his toilet getting plugged and can't get any help in fixing it. He calls but no one comes to take care of it until much later in the day... Poor management at this place.
