You Get What You Pay For

You get what you pay for. This place had a great value because it was cheap! My mom stayed here for a little bit before I quickly put in my notice to move. Luckily, I didn't have to pay their "NON-REFUNDABLE move-in fee" of $3,000 so it could have been worse. They fool you with their nice design but once inside, service is terrible. Many times my mother had the RECEPTIONIST come to help her up after over 20 minutes of the light going off for help. The staff say they are short staffed many times. I heard the nurse even quit because they didn't have enough people to give care.

Not impressed by the tour

I toured this location when I was looking into care options for my loved one and I was not impressed by the experience. The building itself is fine, it looked like they kept the common areas clean and nice looking. I just didn't get a good vibe while I was here. I didn't see many residents out doing things. The person who gave me my tour was very new at the community and couldn't answer many questions. Also, the room I was shown during my tour had a strong urine smell, and was not a good choice to show me.

stay away from the Brennity at Melbourne

This property was an excellent choice when chosen. However, there has been a change in ownership as well as five executive directors in five months. Most of the nursing staff are no longer employees, but acquired through a temporary agency. The quality of care has gone down tremendously. The situation became so bad, my loved one and I decided to move to a different facility. A Place For Mom should no longer endorse the Brennity at Melbourne.

I Would Not Recommend Them

My dad was there about three weeks. He's since passed away. To be honest with you, they wouldn't be high on my list. There were things like my dad fell and no one knew. The night that he fell for the second time there was no nurse and nothing written down of the times when they checked on him or anything - it was like a blank page. They put him in memory care when he didn't need it. The whole time he was there they did nothing for memory care - no classes, no one on one time or even one on six time. This basically left him watching tv all day.

Didn't give the care they said they could

The reason I give them a 2 is that my father moved in there and has since moved into a nursing home. But when we moved him here my brother and I went over there and talked to them and explained the my father might need som additional assistance, well, he did. He had a situation where he required someone to be with him 24 hours a day. They told us they were able to handle stuff and all of a sudden its "we cant do this, we cant do that" and I understand assisted living is different from nursing, but when they tell us they can handle certain things and then say they can't... they should have spelled this out. It was a nice place and everything, and maybe if we have moved him in a couple months earlier he may have been more active, but they should have said what they can do and what they can't.

Great Concept - Poor Execution - Lacks Basic Care

A beautiful facility and great concept. However my Person needed help with the Activities of Daily Living (dressing, bathing, toileting, etc.) and was not getting it. Each time I dropped in I'd see a struggle with dressing, clothes on inside out and backward, shoes on wrong feet, still in room, undressed, at mealtime, etc. When I visited My Person was always hungry. Very quickly lost more than 25lbs - and was not fat when moved in. Was hospitalized for severe dehydration, and AKI, after living there without family supervision for only 4 weeks. My Person's room usually had a foul odor, from move-in day onward. The room was not prepared for move-in in spite of a large entry fee paid. I bought my own supplies, cleaned the bathroom, opened the windows and tried to remove the odor. Crumbs, hardware in the walls, etc. from the previous resident were not removed. Trash was not emptied, not even the once/week as scheduled. I found trash cans in the room coated with slime and stinking - the provided trash bags were not put in them, rolls of bags still visible under the sink . Laundry sat in the room wet for days and days until the odor was so foul I set it in the hallway - where it stayed for 3 days. Returned "clean" laundry omitted such a foul odor I took it to the laundromat. The bathroom floor had no drain, and the shower threshold was low, so any water and/or urine, pooled in front of the toilet and ran in the grout through the bathroom wetting any feet that came inside. If bedding was removed, it was often not replaced. My Person suffered through nights sleeping on a zip-on waterproof mattress cover without a blanket using whatever was available for warmth (a rain jacket, clean sheets in the room that were still folded, etc.) I found no towels were put out in the bathroom so my Person would shower and have nothing to dry with, again using whatever was in the room at the time ( pulled blankets and sheets off the bed). There are many activities for those who are lucky and know when those events are happening. When I visited I'd find my person, and others on the same wing, missing out on an activity because they did not know it was available. Meals were often served cold, and often without the proper utensils, or any napkin. I observed residents using the tablecloth to wipe their mouths. The dining room so cold residents were wearing jackets, and so noisy conversation impossible, not to mention the racket was upsetting to my Person. There is much more to write, much worse comments I could make. Many of the staff were working hard, they seems to genuinely care that my Person was cared for, but they just didn't have the time, or perhaps training, to deal with a dementia patient. The activities staff were energetic, fun, and if they were able to get the word out and residents to the events, all would have enjoyed them. I liked the layout of the facility as it offered plenty of space for mobile residents to walk, and was very well-lit. The short of it is, if your Person can have a 24/7 caregiver to stay at the facility to provide the ADL's plus housekeeping and companionship, this could be a good place. If not, the experience can be extremely unpleasant or worse.

Not appropriate place for high functioning loved ones

My MIL is a high functioning loved one with dementia. If your loved one can still carry a conversation, engage in activities, take care of their basic personal needs, Aberdeen is NOT the right place for them. They assessed her as being appropriate for their facility but they were wrong. 90% or more of their population is late stage memory care issues. The lobby is continually full of late stage residents who have nothing to do. The promises for activities never materialized in the two months that she was there. No arts and crafts, no outings, ...nothing to give her purpose or interest. Her laundry wasn't done regularly. They had lots of staff turn over while she was there. Very expensive for minimal care.

Consistently understaffed, poor management

We moved my mother to Heartis earlier this year and since then we have had one problem after another - most involving response times and level of care. The former Director of Nursing was awesome but overworked and she eventually left. The current patient care coordinator is also awesome and goes above and beyond the call of duty. However, we know she is also overworked and we wonder how long she will stick around. Some of the caregivers are great and truly love the residents, but they are all overworked and underpaid. Sometimes only one aide is on duty to respond to the needs of an entire wing of residents. Many aides have no experience working with disabled people and don't know how to help my mom transfer from wheelchair to bed to toilet to recliner, etc. Heartis remains consistently understaffed and my mom often has to wait an hour and sometimes more to get a response when she calls for assistance, such as for help going to the bathroom. For what we are paying for her so-called level of care, this is all extremely unacceptable. I always believe that problems with a business start at the top - with management - and that is definitely the case with Heartis. The executive director is never available, won't return our calls and doesn't follow through with any promises he makes. I could go on and on, but I think I've said enough. I'm praying there is another, better place out there that we can move our ladies to. My family has had enough of Heartis. My recommendation: Don't take your loved ones there.

Horrible

My Father has lived at Orchard for three years. It was a wonderful place until it was bought and became Caydance. Unfortunately, We are moving him now to a place that will care for him. Cay dance has become a truly horrible place for seniors to live.

Caution when selecting an Indepent Living Facility

The place is beautiful BUT the Assisted Living side lacks enough staff to check in on its residents. It's as if they are in Independent Living. 1. restroom not cleaned, had to tell them several times 2. carpet smelled, again, had to tell them. 3. you have to buy your own toilet paper? Odd considering how much we pay. 4. Poor nursing staff. 5. If you want more care, you need to hire By Design, which is very pricey for night check-ins/care. Staff ratio is very low at night, so beware. 6. Be very careful--and make sure your loved one doesn't need more care even though they rate them. Sometimes it can be a fine line. 7. Re activities, the calendar sounds great but the staff don't encourage the resident to come out and join the rest of the folks. Sometimes people need a little encouragement. Beware of large AL's, especially if run by corporations. They're interested in meeting quotas.

Started out great!

We moved our mom to Heritage Oaks after a stroke left her unable to live by herself. She lived there for 4 years. We saw many, many staff changes, administration changes and deterioration of service and care. It is a beautiful facility, however, that is about all it has going for it. Problems occurred more and more, residents started leaving, staff was let go, which lead to worse service and care. We were paying $5,000/mo. for a number of services and a level of care that was not being provided, despite repeated discussions and complaints with staff and management. Mom's oxygen was not being administered as prescribed, her meds were not being administered as prescribed, the dressing and bathing assistance was often times not happening due to "I forgot" or "I got busy" by the staff, her linens were not changed when needed often times, laundry was lost, and the list goes on and on. I read an earlier review where someone asked for the door code to get out-there were a number of situations where the staff didn't know the code to get in or out. The staff didn't have family contact info if management was gone for the day, to contact in the event of an emergency. When we moved mom into Heritage Oaks, it was the highest rated, newest facility in the area. It is sad to see how much it declined over the four years. You can tell by the dirty carpet throughout the facility how much the maintenance has deteriorated. It took me over 10 times reporting mom's toilet running to finally get it repaired. Bottom line, Heritage Oaks was once a great place. Maybe they can get their act together and be good again. When we left, on average, they were loosing 1-2 residents a week to other facilities, the Executive Director had been fired, and the Sales Manager was "Acting Director", It was sad to leave, but for mom's sake, we had no other choice.
