Very nice community

We toured this community when we were looking into options for my loved one. This was a very nice looking community, it was very clean, it looked nice, and every seemed very friendly. This would have been my top choice, but we were specifically looking for a community that had a hoyer lift. One very handy service they provided was that at the time of our search my loved ones were in VA and couldn't be here for the search, but Elmcroft was able to conduct their care assessment at one of their facilities in VA which would be applicable here.

Impressions at Hobart after 5 months

This is an up-scale feeling facility. The community areas are well kept and gracious in atmosphere. The apartments are just large enough, and take safety into account. The showers are walk-in, with plenty of handrails. Signaling devices are in the bath and bedroom, and tenants wear one around their neck. Residents use their own furniture; pets are allowed. Meals are tasty; alternative meals are offered. If a resident doesn't carefor the choice they've made, they are given other options. All meals are taken in the dining room, with aides accompanying those residents who need ambulatory help. Laundry is done one person at a time. There is a safe and a locked drawer in each room for personal treasures. Hair cuts can be purchased, as well as TP, candy, stationery. There is an exercise room, games and religious services scheduled, outings to malls and restaurants and bus service to medical appointments. I've never met a friendlier staff; they are always polite, caring and concerned. Call buttons are answered promptly, and personal modifications in schedules are cheerfully made, such as changing a bed time or shower time. We have only had glitches when it comes to the medical care that Home Health and the staff nurses provide. Sometimes messages aren't passed on to other staff members, or conflicting care is given. Buses to appointments are dependent on the number of people on the bus and where they have to go. There is no guarantee that the resident will get to the appointment on time, or that the bus will be available to pick them up immediately when the visit is over. But the staff is vigilant about looking for indications of sores, rashes, loss of appetite, or any sympton out of the ordinary. They have voluntarily done personal errands, and helped with cell phones, mail and treats. Seats are assigned for meals, but observation of the interaction between residents may result in a new seat being offered. The residents do seem to take care of each other at meals and games; I don't see much visiting between rooms.

Impressive Place

It was an impressive place, and if it was one level, we would have considered it more. They don't really seemed to be focused a lot on assisted living; they are more for independent living. They do have some support for assisted living, but as soon as you start saying that you will make allowances for someone, you know that the staff aren't going to be as attuned to your loved one's needs.

They really need to work on the security at the door anyone can just walk in at night.

Some areas are fantastic but, some areas where they keep their garbage in the stairwells are disgusting. It takes some prompting to get them to follow through, the maintenance is slow to respond. There are lights that are out or not working properly. On the way in there is an entryway and after dark, should work on the push button code and most of the time it doesn't after dark I can walk right in. There are two entrances a main entrance where the reception is and another entrance on the north side, and the gate is electronic, and during the day it should be open for people, but once it gets dark it should automatically go or somebody should flip a switch. Sometimes they do but 99 percent of the time the door is open 24 hours a day, security is lacking. Sometimes you'll pull up and the kitchen help is out there smoking, it's bad enough to see tenants smoking, but the help needs to disappear and go smoke somewhere else. It's not very professional. Renee is the executive director and she is awesome, awesome. She is fantastic. I met a few at the beginning and the staff is great. It's not easy to keep track of whether he's getting the right diet, and I'm not sure who to ask about it. Overall I like the facility. It's a new experience for me. The price is fair. Though one day we were late to dinner and they charged five dollars for bringing a tray. Amy in nursing is great. The activities are great. The room was private, he's got a little apartment so he doesn't have to share he's got his own fridge, and Kelly was awesome. I would recommend it to others. I signed him out for one night and I didn't know who to call to keep him another night and I couldn't get ahold of anyone, we just kept him and nobody noticed, we didn't get a phone call or anything. They really need to work on the security at the door anyone can just walk in at night.

A nice place, but plenty of room for improvement

It's a nice looking place, and clean. The staff are nice, and the rates are affordable. The activities look alright, but nothing impressive, and my loved one doesn't participate much anyway. My biggest complaints are that it feels very understaffed in the evenings, and the food service is terrible. I've spoken with the director about changes I'd like to see, and I feel like I've been heard, but so far not much has improved.

Nice looking, but not a nice atmosphere

It was a nice looking building, one of the newer places I saw, but the rooms were very small. The attitude of the staff was also a big turnoff, the residents were treated more like numbers than people, no real warmth or caring there. Also they were very bad about nickel and dimeing for every little thing, the costs could really skyrocket depending on what sort of care you were looking for.

Nice looking place, a great value

This was the community we had decided on for my Mom, although she ended up going down a different path and did not move in here. It's a nice clean place, and the staff were friendly enough. The girl we spoke with from marketing, and who gave us our tour, was very very nice. It could have used more activities, and the staff could be more personable, but over it seems like a very good value. Nice rooms and a good amount of care for the price.

We really like it here.

We really like it here. They do have two levels one is assisted living, that part, the upstairs is very well kept, downstairs is memory care and is about a 3 in cleanliness, there is room for improvement. Their all very friendly very helpful. They do a lot with the residents in the memory care department. The food is good, I've never tried it but some of the visits have been during meal times and it looks delicious and they do offer snacks. Possibly communication could be improved I don't know if it's just now, where they have been adding to the staff and Where residents in the memory care in room such and such room to such and such who the coordinator will be and we got a letter of who the coordinator would be and how we preferred to be communicated with either via telephone call or email and I filled it out and sent it in and I haven't heard anything back so communication with the coordinator could be better. The overall sense of the facility itself with the cleanliness upstairs, along with price and location is what really made us choose this.

It's an Adjustment

My mom is in independent living. She hasn't done much, although they have trips, computer classes, and movies every night. She is kind of sticking to herself. It might take a while for her to adjust. The staff is good, but the people that live there are kind of cliquey, and she is having a hard time meeting people. It's a high percentage of Jewish people, and my mother is not Jewish. I think this may tend to happen. A lot of people have been there a long time, and they already have their friends. Independent living provides two meals a day, and you have to go outside to get to the Clubhouse, where the meals are served. The meals and activities are both in different buildings than where the residents live, and I really like that layout. The meals are fabulous!

So far so good.

So far so good. They aren't crazy about the food the staff is wonderful, my husband tried the food and liked it. Their complaint is that they won't make over easy eggs because of a risk of Salmonella.

Bright and Clean

Nice and clean, I actually know the people there. They have nice staff. It's bright and clean and there were a lot of activities for the residents to participate in.

Good assisted living facili...

Good assisted living facility. We almost placed my mom here. Only didn't because it was farther away from where I live. Nice, clean, residents seemed happy. Not a place for someone with moderate to severe dementia though.

Concerns About Their Life Line Program

My dad is in independent living so I'm not too sure how the care is. I know my dad's neighbor took a fall and he said the life line never came. He had a fall the other day and he said it was 35 or 40 minutes until the got there. I called them on it and they said it was only 8 minutes so I'm not sure how long it actually was. Overall I think they're friendly people, it's a nice place and it seems pretty clean but I do have my concerns with their life line program.

Moving to Elmcroft

I like Elmcroft's layout, It seemed more like a home to me with large gathering areas that a resident could sit quietly in and still interact with others. The staff was very helpful and was welcoming even though it was a difficult time for me and for my mother.

Excellent Food and Staff

The care is pretty good. My mother is not used to needing people to help her to do things so sometimes she gets a little impatient when they're not right there to help her. There are some staff members that my mother absolutely adores. They are wonderful and they take excellent care of her but once in a while it's not so great. The activities are pretty decent. They have bingo, movie nights, entertainment, happy hour on Fridays, exercise classes and a lot of other games and things. They take them shopping if they are able. Sometimes they take them out to lunch. The food is fantastic - my mother raves about it!

Food and activities need to improve

It's a pretty good place, a lot of friendly people. The food could be a lot better and the activities could be better, more. They really don't have a good variety with food and the preparation of the food is not what you'd expect, a lot of people have complained about the food. Last night they served macaroni and cheese for dinner with crumbled bacon on top and you couldn't taste the cheese, they're cutting the corners on some things. Some things are very good, every once in awhile you come across something good. The activities are kind of sparse, all day today really there's nothing going on. In the last couple of days all 3 things were canceled and nothing was really scheduled for this afternoon, so that needs to be improved on.
