It is all About the Money

This facility offers an age in place concept, but independent living residents are just that, independent. The independent living residents receive no help. The first step of assisted living can be purchased at a rate of $1600 or more per month. There are no services available in between at reduced rates. Covid-19 has brought out their true colors. The facility has exceeded and maintained visitor restrictions above and beyond the CDC guidelines for independent seniors. They will not allow a screened and healthy family member with a face covering to enter the facility for minor and quick assistance to an elderly independent resident who is not incapacitated enough to require spending the extra $1600/month fee for baseline services. This base level assisted living is suggested if an inquiry is made to allow help to an independent senior in their facility. They do not care how harmful their draconian rules are, they would prefer to make extra money at the detriment of the resident's financial status. They would not allow an independent senior being picked up by a family member to be taken to the Emergency Room to have assistance getting their belongings together for a hospital stay. They stood by their rules and let a weak, sick elderly woman walk breathless around the facility trying to get help after she was told the family member driving her to the ER was not allowed to help her. An independent resident returning from a hospital stay (non-covid related) in a weakened state, must be dropped off at the front door and left on their own with no assistance to settle back in. When does someone coming home from a hospital stay get treated like that? I would suggest careful analysis before considering this facility for a loved one.

Scary and questionable place

Very heavy politics, it's "my way or the highway." My input was not important to them. The caregivers were good for the most part, the philosophy was they wouldn't involve the residents and put in her room and forget her except for meals. She had no way to call for help or assistance and she would yell out " help me" and then she would be told not to do that. There wasn't a clear, consistent plan to help and direct new residents to acclimate them. It was a memory care but it felt prison like and very institutional.

Talk to nursing staff and ask about turnovers and why.

I have had to shovel the entry way several times last winter so my mother would not slip entering the car for Dr. appointments. The weeds in the front circle are less this this year but hate the buck thorn and dead bushes in the assisted living patio area. Housekeeping is poor, missing dishes or chip cups, daily bed making may happen by noon, or after you tell someone. Turning the light on is a can be 6-11 minute wait till someone comes in and then they turn off the light and leave and you hope they come back for your request. Nurses are great and over worked. One nurse at night is not enough at night to care for the whole building (assisted and memory care). Been some real issues with the ever-changing med-passing staff. Yes we may move soon.

Not impressed

My loved one had been staying at this community, even after her care needs had advanced beyond what they could provide. Now that we've seen what a real memory care facility can provide we know that they were not equipped to deal with her needs, even though they said they were. This place was very clean, and we had some good experience with the staff, but the care was not what we were looking for. There also were not very many activities.

Not Worth the Money

Family member of a previous resident and we are not impressed. They have spent the last 6 months painting and without carpet in many areas. No major remodel. Hard to believe it could take so long to replace carpet and paint. Do not feel like the management staff is trained in geriatrics or shows any compassion.

Ok for some

If your loved one depends on someone else to manage their meds, be careful. Moms meds were not consistently given at the required intervals, some mixups were made, and many of the staff spoke poor unintelligible English making communication difficult. At a cost of over $50 per day to manage her meds, I was shocked at how careless they could be. Response time to her pushing her call light for extra or as needed meds could run up to an hour especially at night or on weekends when staffing is low. The pretty building on a lake looks like a great place, but check out the State of MN reports, visit on weekends, evenings, ask residents for their advice and stay involved in your loved ones care, staff are employees usually understaffed and under stress, they are not family.

BE CAREFUL!!

Be prepared to follow up on your loved one and their care. The mistakes by the nursing staff are at best horrendous. Some life threatening. If your loved one needs reminders-they don't happen. If your family member needs a little extra help...it wont happen. If they need medication it may or may not happen. You need to be vigilant in watching over the care of your loved one. We place our family in these communities for peace of mind for them and ourselves. You will not get that here. Don't be fooled by the building and the surroundings. It is unfortunate that the care is not there.

Standard core services like the rest in the quad cities, and the activity gal was a peach! We found it expensive for what you get, mediocore in friendly factor, line staff nice, not so much the top dogs. Came back unannounced and talked with people living there they said: food is cold or tough, manager is rude and doesnt listen, some servers nice, some just ok, no activities at night, and 'high rent for what you get'

Not Recommended for High Level Care

They cannot do high level patient care here. The staff is not well supervised and takes a lot of breaks. They have a pricing point system that is difficult to understand. So the cost can vary month by month on the bill rapidly if the health of the elderly person goes down . So I would not recommend this facility unless your loved one is ambulatory and can live independently with a minimal amount of supervision. Keystone advertises like they can do all level of patients but the truth is they mostly just do the same routine for all of them and I was never sure mom was getting the care we were paying for. Lots of times I just found Mom lying alone in the room, her diaper wet and had to ring the buzzer for about 30 minutes before anyone came to help us. We were paying 7000 per month so you think they could do better!!

Can't recommend

Mom had COPD & Dementia - weighed 145 lbs on admission. Also had hospice - SW commons left her in bed most days. Stacked meals on top of one another. Left in recliner for 18 hours - with bed sores - Bed sores in assisted living! Food is horrible. Understaffed - No Nurse at night and aides are just caregivers with little training. They take residents that need full care but don't increase staff to accommodate so others suffer. She fell and broke hip - several more falls - broken nose - hit head several times. We had cameras in room - can't imagine the care people received without cameras! She ended up falling and breaking both hips, ribs and head contusion. Got her into inpatient hospice and she lived 6 days. Weighed 75 lbs. We wanted to move her but hospice suggested we not do that due to her confusion and lack of care in other places. Staff was kind and loved our mom - they did they best they could - this is administrative problem. It is not the staffs fault. I am a nurse.

This place is absolutely horrible!

Out of pocket is $[fee removed]. This place is absolutely horrible! The staff is underpaid, leading to low-quality employees who are often on their phones rather than assisting the residents. The food is appalling—on New Year’s Eve, they served dried-out bratwurst with chips, and some residents couldn’t even keep their food down. The cranberry juice is watered down, and there’s no housekeeping. Residents' clothes and sheets are never washed, and the overall cleanliness is nonexistent. Without notifying me, they moved my mom to memory care, and when they did, they didn’t even bother to properly set up her apartment. The bed frame was too big, and there were no locks for safety. My mom ended up sitting on a wooden chair for several nights, which permanently affected her physical health. She was so confused by the clutter in her apartment that she ended up using a kitchen drawer as a bathroom because the actual bathroom was blocked.

I've lived the "New Perspectives" experience for a few years. If you have health concerns such as mobility- head in the opposite direction! If you require a higher level of care, I can guarantee you will not get it here. I had a mother who died here in the first floor Community Based Residential Facility (CBRF). I moved in to ASSIST with Mom's care and would often be the only one awake during 3rd shift to care for her! I am NOT a paid caregiver - just a caring daughter. I have a friend in Memory Care who is forgotten when it comes to entertainment brought to the bldg - unless staff is reminded to include her. I know several people in assisted living who have used their call buttons to no avail. Many have waited hours for help with toileting, showering, or receiving their medication in a timely manner. However, the other side of the coin is independent living. Mom died over 1 year ago and I am still here paying high rent, but appreciating the privacy of my "she shed studio."

Would not recommend

It has been a horrible experience from day one! The price we were told is different from what it is. Our loved one have said everyone for the most part is nice and friendly and our score would be drastically different for the staff that delivers the medication. Overall our loved one seem to enjoy the meals.

Lack of care

If you can avoid this place please do it's a nice building but in the memory care unit they never cleaned when my dad had accidents I've sat in his pee cause his mattress was soaked cause they didn't know how to put a mattress pad on the bed and his floor has been wet for a week before they shampooed it and they would not help him eat he could not see so someone needed to feed him I had to go there everyday for awhile just to feed him myself the workers are from Africa and they pay them less so they never want to work they don't realize they are putting people's lives at risk for that and I had found him fallen in the shower yelling for help one time I went there who knows how long he was laying there and then they made me take him to the ER when I talked to the head nurse about his accidents on the floor her solution was to wear suspenders but the staff never put them on him and she just kept telling us to report it to try to make things better but it never changed and we have had to take him out in other people's coat and shoes cause everytime I went there someone else had his things it's just a very disorganized place and the workers like to just sit on their phones

Poor experience, lack of care, never recommend

If I could give them a negative number I would. My mom passed away last October at new perspective. Their quality of care was awful. We paid for daily check ups to make sure she went to breakfast lunch and dinner. My mom wore adult depends and they were to empty her garbage every day, they did not enter her bathroom stunk of urine. They just didn't care for her very well. My sisters and I would go there. Take her to activities. Have lunch dinner whatever with her and nobody had been to see her all day. I started going there daily just to empty her . I wouldn't put my, worst enemy in that place. Right before my mother passed she pulled the cord for help. It was two hours before someone got to her and by that time she was gone.

Disappointed family

When considering Woodland Terrace I would strongly suggest you read the "current reviews" online, go to the Indiana Department of Health Long term Care website to read complaints filed, go to Glass Door to read the reviews written by previous employees and speak with the current residents in Memory Care, Assistant Living or Independent Living. Our experience was not one I would want you to experience. Do a walk through without the Market Manager and speak with any resident you come in contact with on their satisfaction / happiness with this facility. Look at their Facebook page to see when the last posting was and how active are the residents. Ask how many RN's, LPN's, QMA's(qualified medication aids) activities staff are on each shift. Base your decision not on what the facility was like when it opened but, in the last two years. Our experience has opened our eyes to elder care and many things we would like to not remember. We will not refer to Woodland Terrace of Carmel.
