A Place for Mom has scored Koelsch Senior Communities with 8.2 out of 10 using our proprietary review score based on 129 reviews in the last 2 years. Over all time, Koelsch Senior Communities has 1,042 reviews with an average "overall experience" of 4.4 out of 5.
Community is going down hill quickly. Huge staff turnover causing inadequate staffing, food heavy on carbs (particularly rice which is a choking hazard for the elderly) and run out of items frequently. No milk for cereal for a late riser, no butter for baked potatoes, no sugar for tea. Short-handed in kitchen and housekeeping which then puts those duties on top of the Resident Aides who are short handed themselves. Alarms going off constantly which is aggitating to residents. Even though there are two dining rooms, only one is utilized and with 50 residents and family members that come to ensure their loved one is being fed, it is very crowded. Meals are hand-carried out, therefore takes a long time and ones needing assistance with eating are left waiting until their food is cold. My suggestion to anyone planning to tour Arbor Hills - show up unannouced for a tour around 4:30-5:00 pm If you come later there will be no management to show you around, normally only the nurse attempting to dispense medication while answering the phone, front door and responding to residents. It is a shame because Arbor Hills is not cheap, their founding philosophy is very good, however they are not living up to their promises. I am willing to bet whoever put the entry this month that it is great there, has either just recently moved in or their loved one needs little to no assistance.

They should never have opened the doors here, they weren't ready and didn't have properly trained employees or systems in place. Everything feels unorganized and sloppy. 80% of the activities indicated on the schedule never take place, and no notice is given if they are cancelled. The caregivers also serve as the waitstaff in the dining room, and even though it is restaurant style dining they'll bring everyone's food out separately instead of when it is all ready, as well as just having an individual bill for each family member. The medicine distribution is done in the morning, not near a meal time, so that medicine is always taken on an empty stomach. The sales staff say all sorts of things to get you in the door, and then are much less helpful once they've got your money.

Great first impression. Then things seemed to go downhill... feel once they got you roped in to a signed contract, they were done. When call to inquire of Resident, sounds like a rehearsed speech, always "she is doing great" but not many details to let me know why/how this is so even when ask for specific details. When all in shutdown due to Corona, those who care and call need details and assurance about our loved ones even more so. Was urged to use facility's prescription company so did that to make Rx delivery easy for all. Then upon receiving Humana statements noticed the Rx prescriptions are almost twice as expensive. Went back to old Pharmacy and deliver Rx personally to facility. Tried calling their Pharmacy to inquire why so much more expensive, but recorded message stated number had been disconnected. How does this make a person feel confident In their operations? Maybe a couple of weeks ago when delivering supplies which I just happened to inquire about during Corona lock down since no one bothers to let me know when Resident is running low on personal supplies, I noticed two ladies by the front desk. They had no gloves, no masks, yet Notice posted on front door stated Corona guidelines plainly. When I asked why they were not in compliance, I was told they were just there to fill out applications. Even more reason to practice Corona Safety Practices... had they been out of the country, exposed to anyone with Corona, experienced any fever? Who knows? Not in compliance with their own posted guidelines and should have simply handed applications to them outside the front door entrance and mail back to Facility or return in person by calling ahead for someone to pick up at the front entrance for the protection of the elderly residents. Rules do not seem to matter??? If so, how does this example protect the residents??? Kicker is Resident had two pieces of her furniture disappear from her apartment the first or second month of residency and of course, not a soul cares or tried to locate/investigate. Each room needs a camera if employees or other residents enter a person's room and walk off with their furniture! I want furniture returned and stop stealing from residents. Maybe is time to fire everyone again like they had to do about 3 years ago and get whole new crew again? No excuse for theft. Overall comments and general feelings re: this facility... Just so-so. Except for one front desk employee and the Activity Director, not very confident in the other employees. So sorry to have to write a review of this nature instead of what would like to have written if the company were on top of things more carefully. It is not easy to work in a retirement home for dementia residents, but I expect better. Maybe I just thought people cared more for those who cannot help themselves as they used to in their younger days...

Very dark - needs more light. There are trip hazards at the thresholds trying to get into the apartments. Your mom will trip on these - be cautious. The hallways seem like an upscale hospital with fluorescent lights. Not very residential. No activities occurring, all the residents were sleeping in the lobby and the staff was less then friendly. Not a place for my mom.

If waiting 30 minutes after a fall to get help or unattended front desk prevents 911 responders from entering locked doors in the evening indicates EXCELLENT CARE, check out Park Wood. Additionally, you'll enjoy bland, poorly prepared, repetitive meals. Staffing is a revolving door, so you'll meet new staff regularly. The place is beautiful and residents are great, though a lot have recently found new accommodations with better quality of care at more reasonable cost.

Park Wood USED to be a great place with excellent care provided. However, they have reduced the standards for medical staffing. They DO NOT have medical staff on duty in the evenings. Additionally, very few employees are still on staff since a new director has cleaned house...and often reprimands staff AND residents publicly. Food has declined in quantity, variety and preparation. A very different place than it was when my relative moved in last year. Such a disappointment. Lots of people are leaving.

I was very disappointed, for being an Alzheimer facility they had a communal bathroom in the hallway. They should have their own bathroom for no confusion or to not use someone else's toothbrush. They had too many people living there. They gave me a good tour but I did not like the place.

My mother was at this facility for almost 2 years. I moved her out yesterday. As a nurse, safety and quality of care are my biggest concerns. My mother broke her toilet due to throwing things she shouldn't in it. The follow up to repair was poor as they do not have on site maintenance. Sewage was coming up threw the shower and they left it in her room on two separate occasions. Many caregivers saw this filthy sewerage in her room and did nothing. Her option was to use a bathroom at the desk which was often locked with no care givers available to open it when needed. One one occasional there was water all over the floor and I was told by a caregiver we had to wait until housekeeping arrived to clean it. I did it myself and was glad i arrived when I did or she would have slipped on the floor and broken a hip. The apathy was very apparent. In the days prior to our leaving, a caregiver was asleep at the desk. I was able to go around the desk and let myself out of a locked community as she never woke up despite my trying to get her attention. When I reported this, the response was also apathetic. This was about safety of the residents. There are some great RN's but they are tied up with giving medications all day so caregivers do the majority of the care and they turn over constantly. The majority of the care is focused on the residents with higher acuity. Higher cognitive residents receive less attention. It's a beautiful place and there are a handful of wonderful people for this difficult work. There's a reason they are not keeping their staff and it's not accountability for substandard care. I visited my mom daily because I was concerned she was being neglected. Moving her out was an excellent decision.

I'd say everything was a -5. My son and I were very disappointed overall. The staff was not helpful. My husband was diabetic. He fell sitting at table at breakfast. They just st moved him to adjoining room. No one could tell me what had happened other than he'd passed out at the table. When I arrived there that am I found him slumped in a big chair. I asked at the desk what had happened. No one knew or seemed to care. The rest of day until 4:30-5:00 pm I sat w/him while he slept. He had one shower in that month. I bathed him every day in the bathroom he shared w/the roommate. I asked several times for the help to shower him. She said she did not have time. The staff was not helpful in any way. Danny had ulcerative colitis so I was concerned about his bowels. They said there was nothing wrong with him; however he had not had a bowel movement during his time there. The food was unappetizing. Menu same each week. He ate what was offered but it looked disgusting. I was not able to eat w/him. He shared a room. I asked several times if/when he could have a private room. I assume none was available. None was offered. His bed was never changed during his month there. The room was nothing like rooms we were shown when we first went to see about his care there. Their idea of activities seemed to be sitcoms on tv. At least we could not find a single activity for him. For such a high cost I felt it was grossly inadequate. I'm just sorry he had to be there a month. He lived 9 days after I moved him to a private home. I've felt nothing but guilt & sadness for putting him there.

Zero. They were horrible. They promised the world and did not deliver. I would not recommend them to anyone. Creekside was terrible. They were constantly understaffed, staff not well trained. And the management was unprofessional. My father was in the hospital for two weeks at one time and one person called me to check on him or the family. Very strange to me when that is what they advertise the place to be family oriented. [name removed] was all talk to get you in there and never followed up with me. When my father died we only got a very minimal refund and I do believe we were due way more. They never even called to say condolences to me or send a card. It was a terrible experience there.

Worst experience ever my grandma is a resident here. The management that came in from Washington is so unprofessional. My grandma said since this new management came in everyone is being harassed. Treating people like they are nothing. They try to one up everyone. They kept the Christmas donation that the residents left for the workers and didn’t even throw a Christmas party for their workers like other years. [name removed] was amazing I don’t know what they think they could come in and fire everyone. WORST place do not recommend.

It was not a satisfactory experience for me. They lost his hearing aids and he was basically deaf and his glasses. My husband's dementia was not well suited for that environment. The pandemic did not help. I was in the process of moving him when I had to move him to a behavioral/ psychiatric hospital to get him calmed down. He got Covid again and he died [date removed]. Not really able to hear me or his son and say our goodbyes. Such a sad time for me and his son. I am hoping it has improved. It was a fairly new and quite a few residents. I felt good that it was so clean and a beautiful facility. 75 residents with not enough staff. Especially with the pandemic. Recipe for disaster, especially for my husband.

Initial interface with Staff during pre-move in was good. Everyone put their best face on the facility and personnel. Once move-in occurred the initial personnel disappeared and no one cared to help get the resident settled and cared for properly. Worse, there was not enough staff to help care for all the residents at the facility. What was promised at the beginning never materialized. In fact, our family member did not receive ONE bath in 3 weeks despite repeated requests. It took a hospice request to get our family member showered and cared for. Another example was that our family member fainted in the dining room one morning and all the staff did was lay him in a chair in an adjoining room. Contact of incidences and medicines given were not provided to the family member overseeing care. The facility is unclean with heavy urine smell and no activities (despite what was promised at the beginning) were provided...other than television. The staff is over worked and the food is sub-par.

Good management start with good staffing. Always overworked overwhelmed. Sometimes you feel like you cannot meet the residence need because you are overworked. They don’t care about anything else, except accumulating their money. The place is beautiful but if you decided to leave your loved one, I would suggest you come take a look and check up on them quite often. We have a high rate of turnover for caregivers and management. It’s like a zoo beautiful place but on organized and unprofessional. In the end, the residence and the staff suffer due to unprofessionalism of leaders.

It is not a place for someone with Alzheimer's. My husband needed help with everything. We were told not to worry, he would be well cared for. He went to Deer Ridge on [dates removed]. He was hospitalized in May for ten days with an urinary tract infection, sepsis, pneumonia, oxygen in the 80's, high fever, etc. After ten days, he went back to Deer Ridge on hospice. He then went to the ER with an inflamed bladder the end of June. He had three urinary tract infections while there. We we were told they knew how to care for Alzheimer's patients. We found that is not true. There were times he was left wet for hours. Missed meals. Didn't always get his medicines or antibiotics. If you refuse medicines three times, you don't get them. Someone from family was there everyday. We were his advocates, but with all the sickness, his body could not take it any longer. This month would have been our 65 wedding anniversary.

Our experience with our loved one here was absolutely terrible. I'm sharing because if it's happened to us, it's probably happened to others. And I'd hate to see someone else go through what we did. My loved one was here for 3 weeks for respite care. My husband and I just needed a break, but I regret EVER taking our loved one here. I'm just so mad and the whole experience was shameful. He came out in much worse shape than when he went in. He was mobile when we took him in, when we picked him up it took 4 people to get him out of the facility and into our car.....he couldn't walk at all, not even with his walker. He's on medication for fluid retention and wears compression socks. He had a pair on when he went in and they were aware of this. We picked him up on a Saturday. Three days before that, on Wednesday, a nurse from the facility called us. She said our loved one was complaining of some leg pain. She said it wasn't an emergency or anything, but they wanted to let us know so that we could maybe schedule a Dr appointment for him incase it got worse, since he was coming home in 3 days. Come to find out, they didn't put the compression socks on him! Someone sure took them off, but never put any back on him. Any medical professional should know that based on his medications, he was wearing compression socks and had extras packed for a reason. When we picked him up, his ankles/calves were the same size as his upper thighs. No wonder he was in pain and couldn't walk! He's still trying to recover from it to this day. It's just unacceptable. We had a couple of minor issues also (in comparison). We'd packed him 6 shirts, he came home with 4 shirts, and only one of them was his. Also, they quoted us a daily price, but when we went to sign the papers, the price was increased significantly. We called them out on it and they eventually agreed to adjust it back. They also sent him home with the wrong walker, the one they brought out and put into the car wasn't his. I was so upset and concerned about his condition, I didn't notice it at the time. I would never recommend this facility to anyone.
