Windrose is a nice and small residence with caring people and for that I am thankful. As with any business I do think there is room for improvement. Activities: There are so many good activities for dementia/Alzheimer’s/elderly people these days but I have mostly seen puzzles and watching tv at Windrose. Exercise: My mom has lost 7 lbs since she’s been there and her Dr thinks it’s because she isn’t as active. While I understand the aging process and that seniors slow down, I do think moving more would be good. Food: I have eaten it and seen it and feel there’s definitely room for improvement. My mom is not on a restricted diet and I think the food is bland and overcooked - probably why she’s not the biggest fan. Example: ice cream was offered at the end of the meal and it was the lactaid version. She doesn’t have a milk allergy. Wellness Communication: It would be nice to receive at least a general monthly update on my mom via email. When I do inquire it takes a while and my ?s aren’

I would make sure that you look around at all communities and make sure this one is the right fit for your loved ones. The location and this is a new community all stand out to me. Our loved one's experience at Corcoran House was poor.

This was the first community our loved one lived in. It was okay. The facility was nice enough and clean. I liked it alright, but when compared to where we ended up next, they didn’t give nearly the level of care. He wasn’t used to it at all and got extremely paranoid, started developing early dementia, and became extremely depressed. And it was clear that we needed to move him somewhere else.

My review of River Mills

We chose River Mills because of their focus on memory care as well as the structure of the building, it is in the shape of a horseshoe. The room sizes at the facility have been adequate for what he needs. The facility is great and the things that they have in place seem to be great as well. I do think that they could use improvement on their communication and follow up to families. I would tell others to make sure to ask a lot of detailed questions before moving your loved one in here, especially about non-prescription medications as well as medications. We are still figuring things out as time goes on and it is a learning experience for everyone.

Review of River Mills, Cautiously Recommend

At first I was really impressed. I think the activities director is right on point. I'm worried about the memory care unit, since they have limited staff. I've asked for a care plan, and they've not been able to provide one to me. It is a nice and clean community. It's not everything I had hoped it would be. They changed nurses and doctor coded the medicine to be filled each month. The staff never told me that the medication needed to be filled each month. We didn't know of this change until the last few weeks. The community let us took responsibility, but they said ultimately it was the pharmacy's fault. This has been a huge issue for us. I would like to see more one-on-one memory care.

Make Sure You Thoroughly Know Everyone and Everything in the Community, and Push Them to Be Upfront with You

I wasn't happy with my loved one's room due to us having to ask to have their room cleaned on occasion when we went to visit. Everyone was friendly. There were some changes that happened in the community. There were some information that we weren't told about and it caught us off guard. We found out that the prescriptions for my loved one had to go through the community and it was costing us five times the amount, if we had gotten them a different way. We did stop the prescriptions. The activities director was very good, in my opinion.

The care services vary day to day as well as the friendliness of the staff members. The activities also vary throughout the week especially now with COVID. Basically the thing we have been concerned with is that it seems like this community is understaffed at times even before COVID. We felt the ratio for staff members to each resident was way to low, and it was worse on the weekends. Some of the staff members were really good and communicated really good, but then some staff members who worked there just seemed to be rushing through things and didn't communicate that well. There were times we saw the staff members speak to each-other and the residents with their mask pulled down which concerned us. To be fair during the worst of COVID, from our understanding they had roughly speaking around ten confirmed cases, but only one loss. We would also received weekly reports during this time, which were very consistent and we appreciated the communication. Our loved one was in memory care, and there isn't a specific individual that just oversees the memory care side, they one an individual that oversees the entire community which we didn't really like. We had an incident over a weekend with a private aid who was taking care of another resident. We noticed she was handling that resident a little rough, so we spoke with the staff and told them our concerns. The private aid found out and came to our loved ones room and belittled us for minutes without an apology. We even reached out to the activities director and executive director about this issue and it was never addressed.

My father, brother and I were greeted warmly by [name removed]. The staff was friendly and outgoing. We had a sausage role with potatoes and summer squash, with chocolate ice cream for dessert. The facility is dated with small rooms with small closets. The low level assisted living section has evolved from a residence with several add one over the years with a maze of hallways. The low level, mid level and high level areas are separate buildings .They did have a $ 500.00/month discount for the month of May.

Work in Progress

It is still a work in progress for my mother with her move to this community. She is still adjusting, but she is doing okay. It has been an interesting process. They do a have a nice staff at this facility. They are kind when I come to visit her. This is a new facility so there still much to be desire ,as far as the appearance. However they do a good job with keeping her room, and the facility well maintained. They do provide nice meals, and have nice meals available for residents. I still need some more time before recommending this community, we are still in adjustment process.

Mixed experience

So far our experience with Brookdale Mountain Laurel has been somewhat of a mixed one. The facility itself is very nice, and is always well kept and clean. The aide staff are also all very friendly, and do a good job looking after the residents. However, the management are a bit less friendly, and can be hard to get in touch with. It is also very very expensive, although they can be somewhat flexible about the price and services provided, if you talk with them.

Didn't like the feel of this place

We toured this community when we were looking into care options for our loved one. Based on what I saw I just didn't think that my loved one would have been comfortable here. It just had a very old, institutional feel. It just felt too much like a "nursing home", and I didn't think she would be happy here.

I toured this facility when I was looking into care options for my loved one. It is a brand new facility, and it is very nice looking. It is also very expensive, much more so than the option I ended up choosing. I was also somewhat put off by the sales staff, they were very polite but their "niceness" just felt very sales-y and not genuine.

Recently bought by Emeritus

It seems that Mt Laurel was recently (in the last two years) purchase by Emeritus, and this has not been a good thing. We had moved my father there on recommendation from a friend (and after touring that and other facilities, of course), but the comparison of her experience from a few years ago and today are extreme, and upsetting. While the staff are all very pleasant and cordial, the facility is clearly understaffed, and the staff that they do have is not well trained. The nursing director, who thankfully was recently let go, was absolutely useless. I believe her replacement is trying, but there has been only minimal improvement so far. Some of the nursing aides are very good, but some clearly do not care, and should be replaced. The food service is very spotty, meals are often served cold and takes up to an hour to serve. Overall, had we not been in a somewhat desperate situation (as I'm sure many families find themselves), we would have taken more time to do more research, and likely would have chosen another facility. Sadly, most around here are owned by Emeritus, and so are probably much the same.

40-residents. 4-level remodled school [confining, confusing layout]. average, at best [an occupied lower level unit appeared 'messy, unclean']. none in common areas, but 'new paint smell'evident in vacant/refurbished unit. Activities - n/a ['bible/praer' group in 1-common area]. Staffing appears limited [no one in kitchen in the 1115-1130 slot, 1-housekeeping on 4th, 1-aide in common area doing paperwork on 2nd]. Outdoors - convenient location to 'town park, hall, library, movie, stores.' Rooms - confining layout, outdated cabinets & bath fixtures, limited closet-space, very 'high' ambient noise levels on all floors & very 'loud' piped-in music in dining area [4t-floor units are more open & comfortable]. No 'pt' room/staff on-site. Food -- univiting menu choices. Safety/security -- n/a. Care -- [1]-hour of daily care autmatically included; if 'double-lift' assistance required, then must move out.
