From what I can see it looks clean to me, however occasionally, I smell a urine odor, just every now and then. Some of the nurses aren't too friendly, but everyone else is very nice. I think they take really good care of my dad, especially the people in charge. They want me to tell them right away, if I have any concerns. They have plenty of activities going on, my dad is walking a lot more, and he's doing stuff, and he has really improved. He's very happy with the food. We liked the location, and as soon as we finished our tour we were very impressed. Ilene Lipton really went to bat and helped make it happen. Star has also been really helpful, and is always looking out for my dad.

The main problem is very substandard nursing care for the assisted living residents. Our family member who resided their noticed this as she is a retired RN. It was her main reason for leaving, should be become ambulatory in the future. She said that there is a lack of supervision of the nurses and some residents suffered unnecessarily, due to substandard medical care. The air conditioning and heating is obsolete and uncomfortable. If the above two items were corrected, the Hermitage would be a very good place.

Mom was in memory care. The only bad thing was that the window came crashing into the room and it took them over a week to fix it. This was in March and there was a cold breeze in her room. Also there does not seem to be much interaction with the staff and the people living there. My mom is very conversational still and she has no one really to interact with. The health care workers were actually very nice and seemed to be concerned that my mom could move into another area so she could interact with others. We did end up moving mom to another health care facility.

Price wise they are comparative, no others would be better. What they do and what they say they’re going to do are not the same things. I thought the food was good. Every time I’ve been there it looked good. There is an enclosed sun room and when the weather is nice they can go out into the court yard. It’s a real good idea to visit frequently and at different times and to always let the staff know or administration writing know when there are issues and they seem to try to take care of them promptly.

It looks like the residents get adequate care - I saw a lot of staff. But it seemed crowded. I visited during meal time and it seemed congested and crowded. The rooms were large. My main focus was on the memory care side as this is the level of care my step-mother will need. The staff seemed very accommodating in that they would let my Dad have access to the entire facility and not limit him to the memory care area since he doesn't have the same needs as my step-mother. They said there are food options if they don't like what's on the menu for the day. Good nutrition is important because my parents are continually losing weight. A lot of the staff wore 'scrubs' giving it a hospital feeling. Other facilities have the staff in street clothing which made it seem more residential than hospital-ee. There weren't a lot of areas for the residents to sit and ponder - there was a room with a television, but it was being used as a training area for employees. Other than private tvs, I don't know where my parents could sit and watch television with others. I like that the staff takes the residents out for outings. I wasn't there at a time to see any of the activities. One of the residents kept asking to go home - she even said she'd pay someone to take her home. That made me sad. I like that this facility is close to where I live so I could see my parents often. Two more facilities to review and then decision time. This facility is one that I would definitely consider.

The staff at this facility are very friendly, and the facility itself is always well kept and clean looking. However the staff could do a much better job coordinating and communicating with the residents. They don't do a good job of keeping the residents informed of the various activities or services they'll be performing, and my loved one has complained about this fairly often.

The administration was helpful with an excellent professional presence and more knowledge about the Veteran's opportunities than few others. The facility is too small and not a good match for my relative, but would be a good place for someone else to consider.

I toured this for my father, I was looking at locked units. The only reason I didn't go with this was that they had a small lockdown facility, wasn't very large and that was a factor. I thought it would be good for him to have more social interaction.

I think it's overall probably average to good my mom liked it right away, it has a lot of windows. Shannon asked her questions to see how much help she needed and she did it in such a nice way, it could have been uncomfortable but it wasnt. We really did know how much care she needed until she sat down with us. They get a lot of different aids there, some are better than other, some are lazier than others, it just depends. It depends a lot on the different aids you have, but they do listen when you have a problem or somethings not right. I have noticed that they do struggle with the smells in the hallways sometimes. There are a couple of people there that are really above and beyong but sometimes there isn't a whole lot of friendliness especially at dinner time. But I don't think that the people there are unhappy with being there, they like the activities that are offered during the daytime so maybe what I see versus what they see is different.

We are not satisfied with The Southerlands community because they told us we would have no problem qualifying my loved one for VA benefits to pay for it but might take a little while to get the money. We paid $3,000 for the month but did not stay the month because he ended up not qualifying for the VA benefits, they did not want to give any type of refund or anything. They would have known he didn’t qualify for the VA benefits if they just would have asked the right question which they did not do and instead just assumed it would be fine. We would not be recommending The Southerlands to anyone.

Buildings are not impressive. Is very reminiscent of older, narrow-hallways, hospital or nursing home. Independent living apartments are nice, lots of room, can fully cook in one. Has dining area, living area, little "den" area off to the side of the living area and 1 bedroom, 1 bath, at least what we saw. Many have windows and patio overlooking ponds with fountains. Assisted living suites are very nice, two rooms and two bathrooms. Can be set up nicely. Apartment size fridge & microwave. Gave assessment for care points. This is helpful. $8 a point here. They are unlicensed independent (of course) and are licensed adult foster care home for assisted living. Long convesation with executive director, which was impressive, before we even started tour. Other places we've met the exec dir but had no conversation.

While the daytime/weekday staff seemed very nice and competent, we had repeated trouble with the night/weekend staff forgetting medications or not handling them properly. My father-in-law was not only having trouble with regulating his blood pressure but was also suffering from CDIF, which required that his medication be refrigerated. It was not. Sadly, we had to move him.
