A Place for Mom has scored Commonwealth Senior Living with 8.1 out of 10 using our proprietary review score based on 222 reviews in the last 2 years. Over all time, Commonwealth Senior Living has 1,220 reviews with an average "overall experience" of 4 out of 5.
Response time to resident's requests for care/attention needs to be improved. The staff is well meaning but seem to be short handed more often than not. My loved one often had to wait 30-60 minutes for a staff member to respond to his life alert bell. The last straw was the assistant director of nursing calling to inform me they believed my loved one had suffered a stroke and they were waiting for a "transport van" to take him to the hospital. I insisted she call 911 and her response conveyed that she was inconvenienced by the request, but she did comply.

It appears that a lot of the caregivers don't seem to have customer service towards the residents. It seems like my loved one seems to be getting ignored. It would be nice to have better caregiver communication towards the residents. The memory care team could use some tenured staff members to care for the residents. The administration is very nice and professional. The community overall is clean. This is the best smelling community I have been in. In fact it smells fresh each time I work in.

We picked this community, because it was available and they said they could handle my loved ones level of care. It's a memory care facility, and they did not offer extensive rehab. They should stick to memory care because they don't have a rehab facility. They contract with outside agencies.

Some people were friendly, while others were rude. The head nurses were so compassionate. They were a bit unorganized when my loved one arrived, and everything was not ready. It was a nice facility but overall it wasn't the highest level of care that I expected.

The facility was nice, but there was a major lack of care, they had a shortage of staff and did not have enough people to care for the residents there. It was very expensive and we had to provide a nurse to sit with our loved one as well.

They are having a hard keeping employees. I think with COVID a lot of people are avoiding health care in favor of something else. They did fairly well with activities but not so well with cleaning. My loved ones room was not always as clean as I would have preferred it to be. Food was not great when I compare it to the facility my other loved one was in for rehab just recently. The food looked and smelled great. At this place, my loved ones food was not appetizing looking nor did it have a good smell. It was difficult finding a place for my loved one as so many nursing homes in my area had gone to a non-lockdown type of facility.

We didn't feel comfortable with the community and didn't feel it would be the right fit for our loved one.
We toured with Commonwealth at Goergian Manor and found the rooms to be very small, dark and crowded. There was also no storage space. That is why we did not choose this facility.
I toured this community and was not impressed. The overall appearance was not great. It just didn't feel fresh and seems to need updated.
I would tell others that if you are considering Commonwealth in Kilmarnock for your loved one, I would go on a day that they plan the tour but then also go on a day they are not expecting you. Go through the dining room and talk to the other residents who live here - that would be my biggest piece of advice. During our stay we have noticed that they have the same activities every day and our loved one cannot participate. The food does not look appetizing at all - a lot of soup and sandwiches are served. Overall we have not been pleased with our experience here so far.

Commonwealth Senior Living is very close in location so very convenient for us. We do like that our loved one gets more attention then any other place he has been to, the day to day staff who work with our loved one are great. However the leadership could improve more on their communication - we had recently followed up with them to double check our loved one for a UTI and unfortunately they did not do that, so our love done ended up in the hospital with a severe UTI and a small stroke

This tour review was okay. I wanted my loved one to be as close to me as possible to make sure that I was able to get to her easily and this community would not have allowed that.
I think that most of the staff is great. I love the nurse and executive director, they are very nice, caring and open if you go to them with issues and they really listen and take things into consideration. It is just very difficult to find good help right now just like every where else, it seems like there is a lot of turnover. A couple of the kitchen staff really needs some changes, they are not the most friendly and argumentative but a few others are great. I feel I am doing more work than I was expecting too. I think there are changes being made so we are hoping for some improvements soon.

I am pleased with the activities provided, they do a great job of coming around and getting him to go to things. He is a very critical eater and great cook himself and he loves the food that is served. The care from the Devonshire staff is a 5 and they are great people, but the medical doctor is not good. It took him 3 weeks to get around to seeing him and his care needs are still not being addressed. A big issue I have is my father always gets his medications from the VA and they made that note. The first month he got a bill from a pharmacy in Richmond and they billed him over $600 for his medications which he could not afford. They said they would take care of it, but it has happened every month since then and I am not happy about that.

This community was dated in appearance and not the type of environment my loved one was looking for. The tour was basic and I was able to get all of the information that I needed.
We toured the community but we didn't really like the layout or the size of rooms. The marketing person was really nice and she followed up with us when we toured a few years ago. The new one we didn't get a good feel of.
We toured Commonwealth Senior Living and we did not choose this facility because it had too much of a nursing home feel to it.
We were looking for respite care, and they were right down the street from us. IT was for short term, which was fine. If it was long-term, I would not have put my mom there. I would have moved her. I feel like medications were their solution to late state dementia, basically sedate her as opposed to deal with the challenges. Our family doctor had some better, less sedating medication solutions to handle aggression and things that. It was difficult to judge care during CovidI don't think they had enough staff. Even when we were setting things up, it would take a long while to get anyone to come help us. Her first timein a facility lik ehtat, she needed a lot more care than what she could have gotten. Mostly dealt with sales staff, they wer enicekind and acoommodating, they were great. There was always a lot of confusion about supplies included or already paid for. Some sizing issues too big for her. Thye did call us and let us know if any big issues arose that rquired hospitializatin . Kept usinformed about that, that was good. I can't ding them too much for that, for short term solution. For what we paid, I would have liked to have seen her have more one one attention.
