My husband toured the Columbia Heights and Assisted Living community. They gave a nice presentation and had the opportunity to dine there. The director was fantastic. It was more of a clinical atmosphere, very sterile. We were looking for a smaller, warmer, more intimate atmosphere for our loved ones.

Could use more staff!!

My mother is currently a resident at this community and things have not been the best for her so far. I have seen that they have a lack of staff available throughout the day and need to have more on the schedule in my opinion. There is not enough team members to take care of the all of the residents in a timely manor. There was also a short period of time where they did not have an activity directer so there was nothing going on for them throughout the day. One of my mothers biggest complaints is the meal times. She has waited over an hour to receive her food at times. I am hoping they can make some improvement in the near future.

Memory Care
February 6, 2017

When I brought dad to Cedar Creek initially it seemed of great value, pricey but was assured he would receive the best of care. However over time as his memory failed further, so did the care. The first few years I did his laundry, bathed him, cleaned his room, and brought extra food for him to snack on. I started pulling back on that responsibility because at the rate I had been paying these things (aside from the snacks) should have all been covered. Then I would hear grumblings from the staff over having to do these things. We were not at the $2,500 base rate we were at the higher rate for a studio. Over time they were allowing for medical care outside of his available current coverage without my consent. The attendant went behind my back and told the on staff doctor I authorized her to be his primary physician when I told her the complete opposite. I told director. And as always he said he would look into it. Nothing ever happened. Snacks were disappearing at an alarming rate. I brought this up to the director and he said oh yes I saw him giving these things out. That was not in dads character. Keeping these snacks in his apartment kept his weight up. I was told to stop the snacks since they were becoming missing. Many other issues of items missing, or allowing packages to be brought to his room went unattended. There were other family members who would cause issues not only at the facility but in his prior care. I needed to monitor communication due to his confused state. I was told they would look into it. Nothing more ever done. He started loosing weight rapidly. I came in one evening and asked the dining room attendant if he had been down for dinner. This was close to 6:30pm. He said not he had not seen him. I asked an attendant if he had been brought down for dinner. She said he didn't want to go. I went to his room and he was sitting in front of the television. No food brought to his room, nothing. I brought him food and he devoured it. I am seeking other accommodations as I do not feel once the ability to care for ones self declines, they are inclined to help.

This was one of the better communities I visited. Staff are generally friendly. However management is much less friendly or available once they made their sale. Care should be number one and sales will follow. High staff turnover is disturbing. There is no notification of staff changes to residence or family. This is problematic since trust of caregiving is most important to mom and family. Continuity is hard when stuff turn over is high. Nurse seem too busy to interact with family. The cafeteria has run out of key breakfast food on several occasions. This is unacceptable. Very little variety of exercise activities. The costs are so high I expect excellence for the cost.

A new ownership upended the operations for a period of time

I have a mixed review. The positive is the room that my mother occupied which was nicely sized, beautiful view with windows that opened and allowed the fresh air in. There were some notable nursing staff who were responsive and attentive. Mom was there three weeks and I had to ask for her laundry to be done three times in two weeks, I took it home once. One one occasion they cleaned and changed her but her bed sheets were dirty which I noted the day before. I was told by one male attendant that the person that does the laundry was on vacation and he would have to find someone to do the laundry. The business office staff is inadequately trained, were not helpful, and I am still waiting for a callback on the refund that is owed.

Not completely satisfied

I am not sure I am completely satisfied with Vineyard Place. I feel like I was given broken promises of things that sound good but in all reality weren't delivered. The move in process was kind of frustrating for me personally because I felt like they could have been more helpful a quite a bit more welcoming to my Dad on moving day. Nobody ever came to help and till this day he has not been paired with a buddy which was something that was promised. Other than that my dad seems to be very happy there. The experience I've had with the staff has been okay. They seem to be very kind and friendly. Dad enjoys the food most of the time but there have been times where he doesn't eat because he does not eat fish or pork and sometimes that is the only selection.

Disappointed

it's been and interesting experience so far. The community is okay so far. I've had some concerns about the staff and their attentiveness to their residents. I noticed a women in a wheel chair having to push her own food to her room which was very sad to see I of course stepped in to help her but I would think the staff would know to help her. I've just been disappointed so far it seemed like they were so real quick to get us to sign the contract to move in but now that my mother is in the community it's like the honeymoon is over. When she first arrived nobody came in and showed her around or did a formal welcome for her to the community. I just expected a little more follow through from the Community. My mother is okay and I'm not far from her so it's okay for now.

They are probably a good place for assisted living, but they are not a good place for memory patients. I was told that they would be doing all these things for my dad, but they didn't take in to account that he was losing his memory. I was very unhappy, and had to move him out because it was a dangerous situation.

Getting more and more disappointing

We have been living here for a little more than a year. In that time the place has gone through 3 ownership changes, each one worse than the last. With the current ownership - Brookdale - the variety, quality and quantity of the food has decreased remarkably and there is still not a functioning exercise room. The attitude of the Brookdale employees, who have replaced the previous Merrill Gardens people, (who are leaving in droves) is one of indifference, at best. If this facility were not the closest to our children, I guarantee we would find another place to be.

After a huge turnover in management at this home, I find the onsite managers to be very Unfriendly, Combative, Judgemental people I've ever delt with. Many times my wife comes home crying because of them, she is just there trying to take care of her aging father with dementia.

Needs more work to get it right

They seem to be struggling with assisted living seems more for senior living didn't have ADA bathroom when moved in also has struggle to get medication on time and ordered I think they are new at assisted living and are overwhelmed but will probably get it right some time. The value is good compared to her last assisted living that my sister in law lived in

Great staff unless it's the admin staff

Moved my parents there earlier this year have to say the staff that actually helps my folks are great. The people in Admin offices not so great they promise you all kinds of things get you in there then pretty much forget about you. The food is pretty good but the portions are way way to small. For the price you have to pay you would think the Admin staff would be bending over backwards to help, we are thinking of moving my parents but know it would be a set back for them as they have dementia. We are going to give it until late summer and if it keeps up we will do more through research and move them if need be..Also when I only made "fair" of friendliness it only applies to Admin Staff not the staff actually caring for my parents. It would be great to actually have an email answered in a timely manner instead of having to call

First mionth for Mom

Going slow for Mom, going to take some time for her to adjust. Staff are helpful and residents overall are friendly. Just taking time to organize her belongings. Then getting use to a different routine will take some time as well.

emeritus of Sonoma, CA.What change in policies of Merrill Gardens of Sonoma may we expect?

Being in residence since June 2013 my experience is limited. However I previously lived in a retirement community in Petaluma, CA. Because I arrived during a transition period, Manager Webster left, Wendy has been on limited duty since she had other responsibilities that have made her less accesible to residents. My single meeting with Wendy was to deal with the very limited rebates for absence of a resident for more than one week. i discussed 2 [removed] Meal credits of $5.00 per diem apply only after 2 weeks away. Given the $11.00 charge for a guest meal this is very small . Rebate should apply after an absence of one week. There is no provision for resident disposal of non-biological degradable items...batteries, inkjet cartridges, etc. This violates a Sonoma County statute. So far there has been no management response This meeting was in August. No Town Hall meeting was scheduled for October. The so-called committee that receives resident complaints has not provided any report to residents during my stay here. I don't know who the members are. My impression to date is that there is no real oversight by management, limited orientation for new residents, a kitchen with overworked wait staff, no busboys, and no one supervising the effectiveness and training of of the dining room staff.

I had heard a lot of really good things about it but it was older and dark. They had independent and assisted living but their assisted living was just...it was almost nursing home like and we felt that if we placed my dad there is just would not be good. He can still get around and talk to people and everything. It did not make me feel good at all.

Understaffed, high turnover incl: 6 executive directors in 12 months

Staff complaints include poor transparency, bullying, high turnover, low pay, and a toxic corporate environment. One former executive director noted that profits were prioritized over genuine quality of care.

Review for Park Terrace Senior Living by Cogir

They've taken away made to order breakfast and now it's a lukewarm breakfast buffet. Ick. They said the transportation shuttle is available all day when you sign up 4 days ahead for dr visits. That window is now 8-2 so dr appts are difficult to get to. It was $[removed] addtl charge each way to Mayo- so $[removed]per trip out of po keg. Now they decided Mayo is further away than it used to be so they charge for 3 miles each way and they raised the rates $[removed] per mile. So round trip went from $[removed] to $[removed] per trip. The meals and transportation are main reasons we are spending $[removed] p month more than an apartment. It is to this money a lot and we've only been here since March! That's not a good sign. If they take away services, there should be a reduction in rent. Also, they lost their on site dr/nursing service. Don't know if they've found one yet- again- in 3 months time no medical on site. Supposedly biweekly apartment cleaning included in rent- they simply don't come even when you put out your tag for cleaning. I don't think apartment has been cleaned more than 3xs in 3 months. That's 50%. Not great odds. AC says individual thermostats but they have some central system so you don't get AC til they turn it on. Normal temp is 80 degrees in apt even when thermostat is turned to 72. There are constantly emergency plumbing trucks on the property.
