Beautiful Facility With Some Flaws

In the scheme of things, it really depends on the level of care needed for your loved one. There are some great things, and some horrible things. Facilities-wise it's absolutely top notch and top of the line. As far as the staff who are top of the food chain, it's very good. But when you get into the weeds - the people who are taking care of the elderly - it's horrendous. I understand we're in a time right now where service is nonexistent nationwide. But even so, if the right systems are in place, things don't fall between the cracks. Those systems aren't in place here. I think they're trying, but they're just understaffed and can't keep staff. The quality of the food is phenomenal, but the selection is horrendous. They keep revolving the same meals - lots of corned beef, meatloaf, and pastas. The activities manager just left, and even before that, the residents didn't really participate. But the staff weren't making an effort to go get people and encourage them to participate. There's a brand new activities director, so we'll see how that goes. The facility is beautiful and worth some of the frustrations. The hallways are double/triple the size of other places I toured. It's a very large, airy, spacious place. They just have ongoing staffing issues. I give them credit for admitting that they do see the problems, and they are trying to fix them.

Disappointed

It did not turn out to be what we expected. I felt it was not very clean. She had roaches in her room and they did not handle the situation well at all. They have a new executive director that started around the same time my mom moved in. I have heard from a lot of people that the food has gone downhill. I would not recommend them to others based on our experience.

My review of The Stratford

When I moved in the managers were here 24/7. That has changed for the worst! That was why i moved in. My apartment was cleaned every Thursday morning. I'm lucky if its cleaned at all! To much rice and pasta! Meals are slow, the problem is in the kitchen doesn't have enough help. When I moved in I felt it was like a cruise ship without the water. Boy, as it gone downhill fast!

Food is terrible, everything else is great

Harvard park is wonderful for everything but the food choices. If I lived there I would either move out or get take out at least 3 times a week. They had a great menu until Covid happened, then the choices were cut WAY back, and many “meals” I wouldn’t feed to my dog, like corn dogs and sausage. There needs to be healthy tasty choices with each meal. Breakfast rarely even has eggs or other healthy protein. My beloved aunt is so frustrated and I don’t blame her.

Average

My dad lives in this facility and I think it’s average. His apartment is sufficient and it’s nice that they clean it every week and give him clean sheets and bath towels and t.p. The food, on the other hand, isn’t that great. He sends pictures of it and I wouldn’t want to eat it either. He doesn’t eat most of it which is sad because he pays a lot to live there. Overall, as I said before, it’s average.

Leaving as soon as this COVID19 over

Beautiful Community, a ton of amenities, especially the underground parking. We were not impress with the lack of staff at this community. I understand it's an independent community, but we would be spending close to $6K for the two of us. We could easily spend that at another community with more and services. The resident handbook and the sales person talks a great game, but the misleading of information is a joke. The sales person, he told us about all of the services that The Summit was offering when we put a deposit down early and of course none, NONE of them have been delivery yet. After this COVID19 is over, we are definitely looking to move out as soon as possible. This community is a bait and switch.

Not what it used to be

A year ago I might have written a five star review. But now Redwood seems short-staffed and rushed. My resident reports long waits for food in the dining hall and although urgent needs are addressed, regular attention to daily stuff is hit and miss. I hope the situation improves soon.

Not Happy

Wednesday [date removed] I was told at evening dinner service that residents only get one beverage. One over activities and the other by a young lady server. This is crazy. Tonight no coffee offered. No coffee in decanters on buffet coffee bar. I was told my mom just needs to order two when beverage cart comes around. Service is too slow bringing out the meal. Most are out of drinks when the food finally comes out. No one comes around for beverage refill. No extra beverages offered at all. For the amount of money residents pay they should at least not be experiencing this. Managers do not address issues there in a timely manner. Not happy!

Good Independent Living Facility, Poor Assisted Living Care

My mother was a resident of Cortona Park for 7 years 3 months. She entered Cortona as independent living and enjoyed her beautiful apartment, staff, food, and the friends she made along the way. Things changed after she lived there just about a year when she fell in the bathroom and severely shattered her leg. Upon her return after 3 months in skilled nursing rehabilitation she required max point care giving which moved her her from independent to assisted living. In the 7 years she was in Cortona the facility had excessive staff turnover; 3 executive directors came and went, at least 250 caregivers and kitchen workers, and a half dozen Chefs. In that period the one constant has been the LVN medical director, which I believe has been the driver of constant attrition of caregivers who are underpaid, overextended, poorly trained and mis managed . The sad part is that Cortona has hired some really excellent people along the way, most unfortunately don't stay. After 7 years we had to move my 95 year old mother into skilled nursing because 2 new & inexperienced Cortona caregivers dropped my mother on the floor while attempting to get her into the shower, breaking her good leg and reinjuring the leg she broke 6 years earlier; two broken legs. She will be in bed the reminder of her lifetime because of our experience at Cortona Park. My observations are based on my daily presence in Cortona over the 7 years.

When I use to come enjoy the brunches Sunridge hosted it was always good food, fun, and music. Recently, in the last six months when we come in theres tension in the air the food is aweful any more and the office staff are rude. It has differently changed from the way it use to be.

Memory Care

Not the Best

This review is specific to "Memory Care" at Harvard Square. This facility is really understaffed. The aides are friendly and nice, but not specifically trained for people with dementia or other memory problems. The residents are often unsupervised for significant amounts of time. Prospective residents should realize that the sales brochure is only a sales tool, not in anyway legally binding. The contract is what counts, and the language can be misleading (I talked to the relative of one resident; she was upset that she was paying for a nurse to be on the premises 24/7, not realizing that the "premises" meant anywhere on the Harvard Square campus, not the building that houses memory care). The sales person was very nice and positive, but after you sign the contract, you will no longer be dealing with the sales person. Communication between the administration and the facility supervisor is poor. If your prospective resident is moving from a skilled care facility to memory care, you will see a marked decline in "care". Some of this is due to the different requirements between these two categories of facility. "Memory Care" is a relatively new category of facility, and the standards are much lower and not well-defined. Be sure you tour as many places as you can before making a decision.

Not for the handicapp

The staff is very nice. However, if feels very old and the odor walking through the hallway was often terrible and covered up with various sprays that were not much better. Food was mediocre and seemed to mostly be the same and very small portions. The game rooms is frequently used and active. However, their large bus for transportation does not accommodate a wheel chair so residents in wheel chairs are not included. The neighborhood has lots fast food diners but unfortunately they also have lots of homeless begging out on the street. The dog poop is all over the ground outside. I think it was only reccomended by Home for Mom because they pay a Finder's Fee!

Not the best place but not the worst

The management here is horrible. They are almost abusive. I wish I could get my Mom out. The regular staff is great.

Care givers were friendly and kind. Management poor, with poor communications. Unhappy with medical treatment and follow through. Unless something changes I cannot recommend the memory care unit.

Security needed

Pinecrest is a beautiful place but not suited for anyone with dementia. Even though we were told they had people with dementia there and could handle it I spent a month there with my dad because he wouldn’t sleep at night. There were days when his only meal was a half of a sandwich and soup. That is not adequate for some of these people. My biggest problem is they have no security at this place. There are a lot of seniors and some are disabled. They need security there.

Not the right fit afterall

I was here for about 2 months but decided to move back home. This place was kept clean daily. The food wasn't bad they would just run out of it sometimes. They did have other options. The staff was nice and helpful. I just needed a service they couldn't provide. I would recommend this community for a more active person.
