Not what I expected

The food was fair. It was bland and they didn't offer a big variety. My apartment was really nice and the building was nice. Everything seemed to be inexpensive as far as what they provided there. I chose this community because from all of the places I looked at, it had the best rating.

When things return to normal, this would be a good place for active seniors

The community goes out of their way to make sure everything is clean and you can tell when walking around that everything is clean. In general, the staff is very friendly. Even in an emergency situation, the staff remains friendly. The community is a good value, however on the pricey side, with one exception, the food started out very good, and now it is only mediocre. We believe they are trying to improve, however, it hasn't improved yet. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the community is on total lock down. Family isn't allowed to visit and we are not allowed to leave our apartments unless it is for a doctors appointment. We feel they doing a good job of keeping us residents safe. The care is ok. Sometimes they do not show up to assist with showers or other services. Sometimes there is also a language barrier which makes communication difficult. Most of the caregivers, however, we feel don't have adequate CNA training. Some of the caregivers are more friendly, however there are exceptions. They normally provide in a lot of good activities for residents, we have been impressed with what they have to offer. During the Covid-19 pandemic, there hasn't been much in the way of activities. After being tested, we have no cases of Covid-19, so to provide some outside time, they are allowing us to walk with assistance in mask and gloves around the property, which provides needed time outside the apartment. The community is requiring all those that visit hospital to be quarantined for 14 days.

Staff ([name removed]) was very pleasant and informative. Mentoring program for new residents is good. Limited choices on apartment size and configuration. With construction on-going in reception/lobby area it was difficult to get a good idea of what the final result will be, but it seems that there is not much area given to socialize. rental rate was a little high, and with the additional charges for assistance with mobility, limited choices on the menu and extra charges for delivery of food to a room, the rapidly increasing costs for extended care and all the rest made it very expensive.

Great for independent Living, not so good for Assisted Living

My mother was a resident of Cortona Park for 7 years 3 months. She entered Cortona as independent living and enjoyed her beautiful apartment, staff, food, and the friends she made along the way. Things changed after she lived there just about a year when she fell in the bathroom and severely shattered her leg. Upon her return after 3 months in skilled nursing rehabilitation she required max point care giving which moved her her from independent to assisted living. In the 7 years she was in Cortona the facility had excessive staff turnover; 3 executive directors came and went, at least 250 caregivers and kitchen workers, and a half dozen Chefs. In that period the one constant has been the LVN medical director, which I believe has been the driver of constant attrition of caregivers who are underpaid, overextended, poorly trained and mis managed . The sad part is that Cortona has hired some really excellent people along the way, most unfortunately don't stay. After 7 years we had to move my 95 year old mother into skilled nursing because 2 new & inexperienced Cortona caregivers dropped my mother on the floor while attempting to get her into the shower, breaking her good leg and reinjuring the leg she broke 6 years earlier; two broken legs. She will be in bed the reminder of her lifetime because of our experience at Cortona Park. My observations are based on my daily presence in Cortona over the 7 years.

Hands on view from the Spy in the Attic

If your loved one is able to get around on their own and is mentally able keep up, Pelican Pointe is suited for their needs. My loved one is struggling towards memory loss. They do not have enough Aides at night to cover the needs. They have personal call buttons on the residents. It can take up to 20 minutes for someone to come. My loved one does not think to push the button. One morning the Med Tech found my loved one sitting on the floor, having tried to get up, never pushing the button. In the summer there were several nights my loved one never changed clothes and went to bed. No one checked. Most of the food is tasty. It tends to be fattening. Some is too salty. If you order something different than the one Special choice, it takes longer and you may not get it. If you can have a hands on care of your loved one, it will work well. Visiting often and making sure care is being done. Eating in the Dining Room is a good way to see whether you accept the food. They have survey sheets on the tables. No pencils and no one encourages them to fill them out. When I am not there, I am directing getting to bed by phone. Some nights the Aides do it. Bottom line we are staying if I can help improve I will.

Decrease in quality of services

August 2019. [name removed] I am a resident of Gresham Manor for over 4 years. In the last year I have observed a decrease in basic services such as cleaness, functioning of help service pendants and difficulty getting timely replacement of pendants. This presents safety issues for residents as there is no staff in house for twelve hours a day. Administrative duties have been assigned to maintenance, activity director, and kitchen help.

Great value... Average food

The place is nice and it is a very good value. The food is average at best.

This used to be named Greenhills Marymount where my parents used to stay. They have nurses onsite which are great if you need them. It's affordable but the facilities including the dining options are not that great.

We were disappointed. Same building layout as Solstice but owned by Holiday. Not as warm and cozy feeling. Modern decor (which felt cold and sterile). Positive: part of the Holiday brand so they have other residences in other states.

This place is more geared to Mom's who are still more independent since all the units are actual apartments that exit to the outside and Mom will have to walk (through the outside and elements) to get to the community areas. I felt they really need some updating in regard to carpet, ceiling repair (I noticed several water leak stains) and transportation. I also was not impressed that all the little things were add-ons that cost more and were not actually included in the rent. Just not the right fit for my Mom as I felt she needed to be more part of the community and not as secluded/independent this placed seemed. Definitely worth checking out though.

Pay Your Staff Better So They'll Stay!

Staff turn-over rate is very troubling. Three managerial changes in less than six months. Food service is even worse. New people daily or weekly. No one stays for long, which speaks volumes. Meals leave a lot to be desired. Cut corners in ingredients. Wait time for food service is interminable. Average 2 hours. Activities are okay. Not the facility's fault if residents don't participate. Holiday Retirement (the largest provider of independent senior living in the US) should hand out holiday bonuses to their staff instead of asking their residents.

Peaceful place

I think that any assisted living type of place is terribly expensive and I don't appreciate them taking abvantage of the elderly and their families. That being said, Harvard Square was satisfactory and charged for every single little thing...like any other assisted living facility that isn't all inclusive. Staff at HS were mostly very observant. You of course have caregivers any where you go that aren't, unfortunately. My step father passed away a few months ago and is in a better, free of charge, peaceful place now.
