This place was priced better than Oakmont. However, the halls were not very clean and it was in need of painting. The unit I saw was spacious because they'd turned two one-bedrooms into a two-bedroom unit. They'd knocked out the dividing wall and joined the two balconies. They'd also upgraded the counters and cupboards, as well as the bathrooms. I thought that was what kind of place my parents would be moving into (if they got on the list), but was told the next day (by another sales manager) that there were no more like that. The only availabilities still had the dividing wall and separate balconies. So there was conflicting information. Honestly, it seemed that there were management issues going on there. My gut feeling wasn't positive.

Owned by the same company as Ocean Ridge, which I loved. But at this one, I didn't like how they treated the residents. I walked with the director around as she showed me the rooms. We walked by a lady and the director said to her "I will get you that coke in just a few minutes." Then they walked past her four more times during the duration of the tour, and she said the same thing. I said that it would be OK for her to stop the tour and get her her coke, and she said "No, she can wait." This was a poor old woman in a wheel chair. People weren't happy there. No one was smiling. People in the lunch area were just sitting completely disengaged.

I only toured the dementia wing. Pros: Big rooms. Caregiver who gave me the tour was very nice. Cons: common dining/activity area is off in a corner rather than centrally located. Staff seemed a bit worn out. Qualifications and ratios appear less than at the other options. Other [removed] Seems like residents either stay in their rooms or sit in the hallway a lot, but there weren't any activities happening during my visit so that might be a false impression.

All Business - Not Friendly

That was pretty grim. When we visited they hardly even gave us the time of day. They kept calling all the time with issues with my mom so we kept hiring more help. I think the people that were managers up there, when they were agitated with someone the would just kick them out. There were a lot of empty rooms around where my mom was. They weren't friendly. They were all business and that was it. I think even though it was an adult living place you can make the families feel welcome as well as the residents and they did not do that.

The community is too big and just seemed like our loved one would get confused and lost in the community. The hallways are not as big as they are in other community so it really feels dark and enclosed. They need more windows and lighting in the hallways to really open up the community. The atmosphere was very good for us, there just wasn't very many people walking around. Overall it wasn't a good fit for our loved one.

Stay away

The leadership team at this facility was perhaps the most insensitive, group of individuals I have ever had the unfortunate experience to deal with - in a place that should be all about care and compassion. It started with executive director and moved down to her senior leadership team who ultimately did not care about my mom or what she was going through physically. They never once reached out to us after she passed to give us their condolences. From the standpoint of compassion or sensitivity, I would encourage any family to look elsewhere as this group does not have any of that.

On your Own At Carmel Place

When my husband went to Carmel Place in 2018 the food was good but the facility is old and needs repairs. I replaced his nasty carpet myself because they would not . As the time went by the food got worse and worse. The cleaning got worse or non existant. The CNA staff let my husbands UTI turn into Sepsis and were unaware anything was wrong. It seemed to be funny to them. Carmel Place was using ComforCare or CJC Enterprises at that time.. No one there takes any responsibility for your loved one. They leave at 7:30 PM and anyone can walk out at anytime . The sepsis infect. left my husband in very poor health now Hospice is helping me. We have moved to another facility. Many of the employees are very kind and nice to work with, but the manager [name removed] not so much. If your loved one goes too Carmel Place be sure to check on them often.

Beware!

I've lived here over the past 2 years and property is always in a downhill spiral. Less new residents means cuts in service and food, as budget is less. They recently fired the best employee on the property and resident morale is at an all time low. They continue to raise rents, and provide less and less services. Corporate has done nothing to improve facilities or common area furniture, which needs it badly. Anyone taking a tour or the property can see the wear and tear and it can't make a good 1st impression. Front office personnel see to be aware of the problems, but don't take an interest in improving conditions.

Beware of first appearances and promises

My mother in law has been a resident here for nearly 3 years. When she was transferred to the assisted living section; we were told that she was assessed at the highest rate. They lied. The services has gotten worse ; it takes 35 min. for them to take her to the bathroom. By that time; she is sitting in soiled depends. She is constantly being treated for UTI's. The aides don't treat her with respect. And, to top it off; they increased her fees $600+ additional per month. They said laundry is included: I wash her personal clothes; and all she gets is sheets washed once a week. They started charging her more for taking her to the bathroom (which HAS NEVER changed since she began living there)...They subjectively added points (which they hide behind instead of flat fees for services rendered) because she gets upset easily. Anyone would be upset if they take their time to answer her call. I even got a panic call from her because they left her in her room without any clothes on. I am constantly her advocate; I intervene on her behalf and always try for positive solutions. Last week the aide took her call button away; and threatened to take her cell phone as well.

Care is Lacking

My relative is at this facility and I'm surprised that Harvard Square has won the best of 2018 award. The management has changed hands and their is a high turnover rate for the aids. My relative is now in a wheelchair and needs help getting to dinner and occasionally, to the restroom. There were several times when HS didn't pick them up for dinner so they didn't have a meal. They have also failed to respond to the emergency call button within a timely fashion, or at all. The nurse is frequently unavailable so they send my relative to the ER or we pay for someone to come handle simple, routine nursing tasks. While the facility is beautiful and has some nice bells and whistles, when it comes to the actual care of your loved one, they fall short. When investigating facilities, be sure to focus on how qualified and reliable the care is, if the rooms are designed to accommodate wheelchairs, and how emergencies are handled. I realize that the overall standard of care that seniors receive in our country needs improvement. I wish that Watermark would be better at reinvesting their profit to improve the care at HS and actually follow through with their advertised promises.

Unacceptable

I had a friend living here for several years. There were many problems during that time with long wait times for assistance, unappetizing and unappealing food. The family spoke with the Administration many times to try to remedy the problems. Food is all processed and comes directly from Sysco Food Corp, nothing is make from scratch. The vegetables generally were of a frozen blend that was overcooked. Everything was served on the same plate, salads, veggies, meats, sauces etc... make it un palatable as dressings and sauces would be mixed together. Bread was placed on top and often became a soggy mess. Our friend had problems with her legs aching in the night, and several times was told she had to stay in bed for several hours after she requested to be gotten up, as she was in pain. She was unable to get in and out of bed on her own. She also needed help getting off of the toilet, and many times had to get off herself, taking a chance of a fall, and sitting with her pants down in her wheel chair until she could finally get assistance. Many times there were water temperature problems so she was unable to be showered. While many in the staff are kind, the overall care was unacceptable, and my friend was forced to find a new assisted living facility to better serve her.

The only good things about Oak Park are the caregivers and med AIDES. The director and other management are standoffish – do not interact with residents. Food is mediocre and slow service. For the price my mother pays ($ 7700 per month), I expect more …

Not as Impressed as I was lead to believe

At first this organization was very friendly and helpful with signing us up into the place. Right afterwards, we noticed that the employees were not fully qualified in some areas. One night a staff member got upset with my husband and walked out on him while they were helping him go the the restroom. My husband is a fall risk and has trouble going to the restroom at night due to his medications. The second day that he was there, he decided that he wanted his meals in his room rather than going to the dining room. One day they came in to take his order for breakfast but never show up with the meal. Lunch came around that the same thing happened again. When his blood pressure rose to high levels, they contacted me to bring him his meds. I advise that I lived in another state and that they should be contacting his doctor with these concerns. One night the fires alarm went off and it appears that no-one knew what to do. Luckily it was just a toaster in a patient room that was smoking but it could have been more serious. My husband will not be staying any longer than the initial month. This is truly a bad experience for him and me as the one who thought that this place would help both of our needs. We are back to square one.

When we toured the Atrium we were told of all the activities they do as the object was to keep the residents active and out of their rooms. The year my dad was there the activities leaved something to be desired; this is not the place for your loved one if they like to be active and socialize. There a few extremely nice people at the Atrium however the nasty ones out weigh the nice ones. On several occasions I was told I would get a call back and never did, I was left on hold and forgotten and stood at the desk while employees were texting on their cell phones. Worst of all and most alarming is it appears the staff is not trained for emergencies. My dad hated the Atrium and could not wait to get out of there. He is now in a wonderful facility that he loves and could not be happier. Do your homework before signing on the dotted line at the Atrium Village.

I don't recommend The Atrium; better options available

They seemed friendly and helpful enough at first; however, over time, the lack of quality staff and food became more evident. Also, communication is very difficult with regards to the business aspect of the facility. Seems there are too many hands in the pot and none want to make a decision. My dad was at The Atrium for a year and did not like it. We were able to move him to another facility where he is very happy. The professionalism of the staff, the food, and the communication are all superior now to what we found at The Atrium. I wouldn't recommend The Atrium. Keep looking around for something better; your loved one deserves that!

Please throughly investigate before leaving a loved one

When you see employee reviews about working for this for profit facility you will see the truth about this facility. I have worked in the business world for 30 years and came to realize if employees are miserable the customer will be also. You and your loved one are the customer. The facade in the lobby is just that. My mothers dementia has gotten much worse and the directors and management only work to keep the facade going and not address the real issue , which is my mother safety and health. When they take one family members side and [removed] to the other family member it just shows they do not really care about the residents. I will never forget the look in my cherished family members eyes when I was trying to bring her favorite food to her and was told I could not come in the entrance. [removed]. This facility has not only added to the family situation but have caused [removed] of the other family member. The only thing they seem to get is legal action.
