Decor is a bit dated; perhaps older people are more comfortable with it. My mother has been very reclusive. It is independent living, so she doesn't get all of that much care. They have reached out to her. What she gets is pretty much brought in by home care agencies. My mother chose the location. For her budget it's probably perfect. She would like to be able to cook her own food; she is only given a fridge and microwave. She would have preferred something more independent. The food is not good. That is probably one of the biggest challenges. There is only one elevator, causing bottlenecks getting to meals and so forth. The location is fine, for her, it's further for a little more challenging. She is in a wheelchair, and their bus is not wheelchair friendly. It might make it easier for her to get out if they did provide a bus trip. Friends and family are taking her everywhere.

So far I think it's very nice.

So far I think it's very nice. I'm not sure about the activities, she's not quite settled in yet. She was very excited that they had a pool. The food is pretty good. The one thing is the amount of lighting in her particular apartment, the maintenance guy said he would try to change that, it's been about a month and that hasn't happened yet. It's very dim in there, there aren't a lot of lights on the ceilings, and there is only one switch that will turn the lamps on. The other thing I noticed was that they were going to replace the carpeting before she moved in and they didn't, they cleaned it, but you can see the stain they didn't replace it. The pool was a big factor of why she picked this, also when you walked in the door we saw a lot of people being active. They have covered parking, and everyone is really nice, and I like how the dining is open pretty much all day, and there is a lot variety, and choice. If she is in her room and wants to make a sandwich, and can go down and get a little cup of mayonnaise. There is a full size fridge and stove as well, a lot of places only had a mini.

Liked the building's open space/park setting with walk-out trails and big sun deck. Fourth floor independent living one-bedroom with study available - liked the extra study option. Have to move downstairs to go to assisted living and base price for assisted includes extra $1,000 for two people (Dad would have to take basic assistance plan, too, to live on the floor, even if he's not using it). Only 30 days notice if you want to move out. Good food, nice staff. Some of the appointments in common areas seemed somewhat dirty and worn. Good sized library.

Acceptable if you don't have a lot of needs.

At first glance, it's a very nice facility. But with the recent change of owners, it seems to be going downhill. When calling for assistance with dressing/toileting, etc. there can be a very long wait with no explanation that there will be a wait (because of an emergency, etc.), leaving the resident to feel forgotten. The food is acceptable, if you don't mind highly processed foods with a lot of pre-frozen choices. There are plenty of choices and they do have a daily fresh salad/fruit bar. If you are concerned about the quality of the food (not fried, processed, preservatives, etc.) this might not be the place for you. Since the change in owners the aides seem to be in charge of everything, including meds management. Pets are welcomed for an additional fee and there are plenty of activities. There is no place for a community garden, nor is there a pool or wood/crafts shop for those who are so inclined. Neither is there an exercise room, although there are regular exercise classes, some of which are self-led with video, resident volunteer-led, or professional fitness instructor-led. The latter has been rare in the past several years.

The staff at this facility were welcoming and helpful. They tried hard to engage with making a sincere attempt to learn an unfamiliar name. They have good medical resources. The layout with a larger number of residents seemed more efficient for independent living. Going down long corridors to common facility areas seemed as if it might pose challenges. Perhaps it was the timing of my visit but there did not seem to be much community interaction. I did not meet any resident and saw only the model apartment. The place is clean and good and the staff seemed friendly.

Unimpressed with Madrona Hills

We weren't all that impressed with Madrona Hills. When we got there we had to wait for a awhile before anyone acknowledged us. The cleanliness, from what I could see, wasn't real impressive. I think someone had to come in there and teach them how to vacuum. Plus it kind of smelled, probably because it's an older place. We were just not that impressed.

Blaring Sunlight!

There's good things and there's bad things. The room that I got - I didn't know it at the time because I saw it in the morning - but the sun is so bright I can't stand it. It's blinding me and heating me up. That is my only complaint. Other than that everything is okay. The food is okay. We chose this place because my son liked it.

Didn't get the therapy he needed

The hospital recommended my husband come here after he fell, I was in Hawaii recovering from hip surgery so my other daughter was the one coordinating things, she was new to this and so was I but I found out later that if he had been in the hospital for 3 days instead of 2, medicare would have taken care of it. He was there for a little over a month and I would check in to see how he was doing and they said everything was fine but at the end of the month I got a call saying medicare wouldn't cover it. I looked at the bill and had assumed he was getting physical therapy, but it was speech therapy and eye to eye therapy, and this is for someone with Alzheimers? Who had fallen? That didn't make sense to me. They were touted to be this wonderful place but I think they contracted the therapy out and the therapist took advantage of the situation.

Food Quality Has Really Declined

They're very friendly there. I don't know how much it is to run a place like that but I do believe that they are overpriced because their quality has gone down. My parents have been there a year and they used to have really good meals. Now they are using cheaper meat - looks like stuff I would throw in the trash can when I trim my meat. I just think that for people who spend thousands of dollars a month the quality could be better. They should get a sandwich that is more than just bread and meat. They can't put some lettuce and vegetables on it? The activities are good. They have sing alongs, comedy night, movies. They play Wii, have excercise classes, knitting and crocheting classes. They have their country store and different little fairs and outside entertainment.

New corporate atmosphere made it chaotic

My husband was there almost a year. The first 6 months were fine, I put him in in May and their administrator became ill and she had to leave at the end of December. Then they brought in a corporate administrator and that was...oh boy. At the time I put him in they had 33 people, but they had capacity for 62 or 63 and when the new administrator came in she seemed to make it her mantra to fill those beds. She was filling those beds but she was hiring people who were not experienced to take care of them and it was very chaotic, there were days when I came into that place where I would be helping the people. They didn't even know where my husband was and he was too far away from the dining room. He had problems walking and if he didn't want to walk to the dining room he didn't eat, they didn't bring him food besides lucerna and he lost a lot of weight. He was over medicated also and actually, some of the staff that were there said they wished they could go with me when we left.

New and Modern but Not Cozy

It was newer. The main room was very modern with high ceilings. Just like a huge, great room but it wasn't intimate or cozy. It's very upscale and nice but very expensive. The modern feel of it did not appeal to my father.

This was the one with the b...

This was the one with the best location. However the one bedroom was very small for the price. I felt I wouldn't feel comfortable living here.
