Looks Can Be Deceiving

This is a new facility, opening late summer of 2021. We decided on Harbor Chase based on the overall plan for care and resident engagement and the impressive layout of the facility itself. Not to mention, we really got a good vibe from the staff we met as well, especially the head nurse. The promise was never fulfilled. After moving my father in, it did not take long to realize that something was amiss. They were only at about 30% resident capacity, yet the existing staff was clearly overwhelmed. The engagement activities were sparse at best, my father’s room never appeared to have been cleaned and I witnessed memory care residents left to their own devices for very long periods of time without being checked on. Within a week of our move in date, the director of the Memory Care unit quit. Not long after that, the head nurse also quit as well as two of the aids that were at least trying to keep up. Ultimately, the level of care was sub-par.

Our family had a virtual tour with Fieldstone and it was nice, but there is a movie theater inside for residents to go through and even though some people might enjoy that we just did not think that was going to work with our loved one especially due to her health state.

My review of Bella Vista Retirement Living, LLC (Bella Vista Retirement Living, LLC)

Unfortunately Bella Vista did not work out for our loved one, it seemed like they told you everything they offered and would do but none of that was happening. It seemed like they just left residents in their rooms or by a TV, so it was not a very stimulating environment. If your loved one is bed ridden this would be a good place, but for those who may be more independent or active this would not be the place. There was a lot of hallways inside the building so it seemed claustrophobic. They said they had a bus service that would take the residents to and from grocery stores and doctors appointments twice a week but that did not happen. If it did happen you would have to sign up to use it so it was just difficult to use.

I would recommend

Our initial experience was not so good, but we have gotten things figured out since then. When we were having issues the supervisor replied right away and action was taken. So far the care here has been ok and he seems happy and well taken care of whenever I go to see him. They do have a nice activities program on a daily basis for residents. Right now they are still shut down so we are not able to visit much inside of their rooms and we have had a couple of issues with laundry. Overall I would definitely recommend them to others who are looking.

Needs More Staff

I'm not happy with the fact they seem to be short staffed. They are allowing visitors for residents to see family. I am having to clean my loved one's room, and this is something the staff should be doing. What is the assisted living for this community, I keep asking myself. My loved one doesn't enjoy the food. The people at the front desk are wonderful. The staff communication with the family is horrible! They have an activities schedule for the residents to choose from.

Our experience with HarborChase

We chose HarborChase because it was close to family and they had a good sales pitch, but some things promised did not occur. Mostly with the activities, we were promised non stop activities and they have basically stopped all of those and there were not many to begin with. When extra care was needed, they did step up so we did appreciate that. I would recommend them but also check others out as well.

I was not bowled over. It's a nice place, good facilities, what seem to be good and comprehensive services like housekeeping and laundry, but some of the add-on services like "level 3: service is an extra $750 per month, over the $8000 *expensive) for the memory care studio. The say they use a Montessori=based system, and I don't know what that means or implies. We would also be responsible for buying all the supplies, pads, diapers, etc that Linda would need *(I thought the facility provided these, but apparently not.)

We toured this community for care. We were not happy that the community was clean. The residents did not seem happy. We did not like that the staff do not work with the residents or try and keep them active. We would not be able to recommend this community to other families for the care of a loved one.

Newly renovated and clean!

This community is very clean and newly renovated. The housekeeping staff comes in every other week and stays on top of things. The biggest issue is the residents. It's a very old crowd and no one seems to have the same common interests as I do. It's also depressing to share meals with the assisted living patients. They don't offer many activities but have said they plan on increasing them. They also don't offer an are for social gatherings.

I went to tour the community and i wasn't very impressed with the exercising program they offer. The exercises the residents did were to a television program. I didn't feel this was a good fit for my mother. The community was very big i was looking for something a little smaller. They had meal plans available for the residents. It was a clean place with very nice staff. The guide did a good job explaining everything that they offered.

I have mixed feelings so far.

I have mixed feelings so far. The transition hasn't been very smooth. I haven't seen them really make the effort they said they were going to, to get her integrated and involved with the community. There have also been some billing issues and confusion. It's clean, and well maintained, the staff is friendly, and all of that is good, it's just been a rough transition.

good at taking caring of things after the fact

At HarborChase of Plainfield they are good at taking caring of things after the fact. They are not good at preventing injuries in the first place. I was promised many many things and I am not getting them. The safety factor is my biggest concern. The staff are extremely friendly. They have him in physical and occupational therapy, so he is getting good care. My husbands mind is in good condition and I would like to see more engaging activities for him. We will see what the next few months bring and I will decided on whether or not I will keep him here.

clean and friendly, but bad maintenance and terrible food!

There is one laundry room for each floor. The one where my mother in law is, we had to go fix the washer ourselves because it was not working. The counter is still broken and needs to be repaired. So there are definitely some things as far as maintenance goes that could be improved. The food also is not good. I have talked to a number of the residents there and have had them all say the same thing - the food is really bad. I of course don't expect them to have five star restaurant food, but better than what they get. I could go on about this for a while - the food is really bad! The place is very clean, Michelle does an excellent job with the activities, and all the staff there is incredibly friendly. There really are a lot of things to commend them for, so it's a shame I've had to say a few negative things. There's a lot of good and a lot to improve at Voorhees Senior Living.

beautiful place, poor administration

The facility at Bella Vista truly is beautiful! However, the administration needs improvement. The leasing office and management were extremely great in picking up my loved one and showing them the facility. However, there seemed to be no coordination once they got there to get them set up properly and made to feel at home. The administrator was out of touch with what was required, which made it difficult for the family to get done what we needed to do on our end. I was also appalled at their solicitation of donations from the residents to pay their staff a bonus, That is something the company should take care of without compulsory donations being squeezed from the residents.

they really care

They really do care about the patients. Unfortinately it has not quite worked out for us. Dad recently got sent out of HarborChase of Plainfield and back to a psych ward because it turns out that they are not adequately equipped and prepped to handle his temper tantrums and things that go along with dementia.
