The overall cleanliness of the facility is as good as it gets; however, the floor nurses are not very good at cleaning my parents' room and I have had to call them in on a regular basis. For example, one day I came in and the bathroom stunk of urine. In terms of care, they should be ashamed of themselves. I hired personal aides that are with my parents 24/7. The floor nurses see this and don't lift a finger to help. I've also seen the way they treat other residents at mealtimes. They sort of shove a spoonful of food at them and generally have a pretty careless attitude. So what exactly am I paying for? As far as I can tell, a one bedroom apartment with food and activities included. For the money (being in NYC) I guess it's okay. Let me know if you'd like to chat. I realize that all facilities are sort of like this except for the very best like Sunrise around the corner from me, but that's $[removed]/month. I just didn't know how poor the overall care was in the general industry. They are for profit institutions and they understaff to make money. Anyway, that's my feedback.

Our Experience

My loved one was previously a resident at HarborChase of Plainfield and overall, the experience was okay at best, not great. The frequent staff shortages seemed to plague the place. The main nurses were okay, but the agency nurses/care takers that they used didn't really care and were only there for a paycheck.

Our Experience

On the surface, the staff seems to be friendly, but as far as quality of care there are some who do as little as possible. There is little consistency of what they are supposed to do and what they actually do. They are understaffed at night and not equipped if something happens and someone needs assistance. (Ex. I was there and there was no nurse on staff to give someone medicine only aides who were not authorized to do so. They wanted to send someone to the hospital that only required some cough or allergy medicine)The administrative staff is not approachable. They are hard to set meetings with and very defensive if you have a concern. They are more concerned with the business side of it than the actual welfare of the residents. They do not seem to realize the challenges family members face when choosing a place for their loved ones. It is a hard adjustment on everyone and after paying the $[removed] fee that is non returnable and really not understood what it goes to you are kind of stuck if you are unhappy with your parent's care. They do not seem to want to partner in making it better for your loved ones, they just seem to be defensive and abrasive when hearing your concerns. In the beginning we were told that meals with our loved one was encouraged and as time went on they acted like it was an inconvenience for staff members to host other people even though we were paying for our own meals. Meal prices raised from $7 for dinner when my loved one first got there then went to $10 then to $16 in 6 months! I felt like it was a way to discourage me from eating with my loved one.

Experience so far.

Five Star recently increased their prices considerably. They have a new food service company which we thought was going to mean better food but that has not happened. There are frequent issues with the heat and air conditioning I assume due to the age of the building. Staff is quick to address but still an issue. I would recommend them, these are the critiques but I am not unhappy with her being there. I'm sure there are issues everywhere. She has a roof over her head and is safe. I have a different experience with the staff than she does, they are always super friendly to me and for the most part with her too.

'Nice community with room for improvement

Activities & amenities are nice (library, craft room, theater etc) Downsides / problems for us have been: - billing - we provided ACH info when we signed & they did not run her first month's rent & didn't tell us till the 20th. Then communication/ responsiveness resolving it was poor. - In-apartment cleaning: she's supposed to get a 2x a month cleaning and they haven't done anything at all yet. We asked and they've told us twice she isn't on the list and they'll add her. - food is OK. - staff has been a bit impatient for her asking /saying the same things repeatedly, which is odd when memory issues are the whole reason she's there

Our experience with Voorhees Senior Living

My loved one is a resident at Voorhees Senior Living. This facility is not as expensive as others in the area. We have found that many Assisted Living facilities are over priced, even this one for what they provide. This facility needs to pay more attention to the caliber of staff that they hire. The facility itself is a very well constructed building with beautiful grounds.

I'm not sure if you can see the notes from my family's search, but I have a Nursing Degree, so I kind of knew what to look for. While, in my opinion, they provide care, my dad's Alzheimer's is too advanced for them to provide the necessary care for him. There were a few HIPA violations that I noticed and there were little to no activities. It would have been more stressful on my mom and my family even though he would have been much closer. Sorry to be so blunt. I'm sure it's fine for some, but not my family

Patient needs could be better coordinated with staff and shifts. I had to repeat things over & over to each new nurse

Improvements: a call button was not issued immediately - this took two months. Once our loved one was places on hospice, things did get better with the care. There are some communication issues between staff members. It took them three months to get our loved ones meal plan straightened out. Nighttime staff is a bit inconsistent. However when our loved one passed away, the staff were very kind to our family. If something wasn't ok I heard it from all of my siblings. Very stressful. I get the sense that there was a bit of overselling.

Loved One Improving Over Prior Living Circumstances

They have activities, but my loved one does not participate. They have a new administrator, who is making changes. They don't seem to have enough care aides. My loved one is benefiting from the therapy and is making improvements. The food is outstanding, and they have a lot of choices. They can improve with medication tracking. Overall, the building looks great, and is newly remodeled.

Not What We Were Promised in the Sales Pitch

This is an okay community if this is the most you can afford; however, if you can spend more I suggest going to another community. During the tour it looked good. After my loved one moved in, the community started having staffing troubles. The residents have gone from ordering from a menu to just being served the food and the residents have to take their meals back to their room. This is because the community doesn't have enough staff to accommodate the residents in the dining room. The daily activities are limited to maybe 2 activities a day. The community originally had a car and van for transportation for the residents to use; however, the community didn't renew the lease on the car. The property was just sold to new owners, we will see what happens.

Caring Staff, But More Intuitional Than Residential

The staff were generally friendly, and seemed to be caring towards the residents. It seemed the program activities didn't seem to be the best. My loved one wasn't engaged in the activities, and was hanging out in different areas of the community. I never heard about my loved one participating in activities. I'm not sure if the staff were lacking to be able to provide the activities and engage the residents in the activities provided.

Review for dads care

We have had some really good things at this community and some really bad with them also. I feel like my dad one is being taken care of adequately. They have activities like an ice cream social, a dance, and more for them to socialize and stay active in the community. I have not had any experience with any other communities so I dont have anything to really compare it to.

Plus things: Lots of activities for the residents. Meals appear to be tasty and nutritive. Rooms appear to kept clean. Minus things: Sorely understaffed on weekends. Response time to call buttons being pulled by residents horrible. Constant smell of urine in hallways outside resident rooms. No nurse on duty (just on call) at night and on weekends. No attention to residents personal habits - if the resident isn't up and ready to take a shower when the caregiver wants to give it, the resident doesn't get a shower.
