Not appropriate for residents who need enhanced care

The building is nice, clean and provides able-bodied residents who do not have any physical limitations the freedom to roam. Large outdoor walking, dining and activity space for good weather days. Caring staff could greatly benefit from specific training on how to care for patients with dementia and how to assist residents who need assistance with transfers and mobility issues. There were not enough front line staff to assist residents with transfers which caused many problems. Staff was caring and devoted to their work but many were not trained to work with residents who have dementia and mobility challenges. Staff ratio to residents only allows minimal interaction with residents. If a resident is able to get themselves to the activities, the activity director is great but she doesn’t have any assistance so there are not nearly as many activities as advertised or listed on the calendar and staffing at the activities is bare. Charter has potential but needs more and well trained staff

Don't do it

Best thing going for this place is the smallness and one level. They do not monitor what they eat. Residents are given a menu in the morning to pick for tomorrow. Do not have a diabetic or congestive heart failure choices. Management - where to I begin. Just do not do it - go elsewhere. They want your business but not the task of educating the resident and family members how things work. Noone is really sure what the left hand or right hand is doing. On my moms move in day she had to be there at 1pm - not sure why. I thought there would be a tour or briefing or something - nothing - just verbal welcome and come have some lunch. If you do decide to go here DO NOT DO OUR MEDICINCE THRU NAUTILUS!!!!!! If your loved one comes home it is not a flip of the switch like [name removed], executive director makes it out to be. Is a nightmare and noone at charter knows the protocol and noone wants to accept responsibility for their error. Seems to be a ongoing problem.

Horrible Experience

The TV room, furniture and carpet where the Residents live smell of urine. I would spray the furniture with Lysol and the carpet with Febreze. They never shampoo or vacuum their carpet, nor do they clean their furniture. Very short staffed. The Residents are not toileted, as I witnessed them and my mother soaked and smelling of urine. I washed my mother's laundry but her clothes kept coming up missing although her closet was locked. I took my complaints to management and they were never addressed! To keep my Mom from walking around so much and risk for falls, they increased her meds and confined her to a Broda chair. Lastly, they recommended that my mother be placed on Hospice to make their job easier. "To get extra help" It got much worse after that. Unbeknownst to me, my Mom was overly medicated. Slept all day. Her pm Seroquel was increased and she was given Xanax without my knowledge. Once I moved her out, I got my Mom back. She is alert, she walks, talks, uses the toilet.

Do not recommend Charter

We moved my parents to [facility name removed] last month. Charter was a train wreck. Poorly managed, Executive Director is incompetent, staff are unfriendly and unhelpful. Only the dining staff are kind and professional, as was the woman in charge of submitting their insurance claims. The PT company that operates independently within the same facility is also great. Very professional and compassionate. But overall, no, I would not recommend Charter.

Did not choose this place

Although the facility was lovely, we did not have a good experience with the administration staff. We were told we would have a clean freshly painted room and clean carpet by a certain date. We had furniture delivered and the room was not ready and the money was not going to be returned. Just a difficult situation for us and for them as they were losing staff. We went to another facility that we are extremely pleased with.

Raise the Standard

There are a few great caregivers at Charter Senior Living. However, this place is one big health crisis. Just this year alone, they have had a bed bugs and scabies outbreak. If you didn't already know, scabies is a parasite that embeds itself in your skin and leads to an unbearable amount of itching. Residents hardly ever leave the facility and unfortunately most family do not visit enough, so these issues are most likely coming from the worker(s). They do not clean and or deep clean this building nearly enough- there's a very distinct smell. Many patients are not receiving the minimum level of care that they are paying for and the food is disgusting, small portions too. Every resident at Charter pays for a certain level of care. For example if they are at a level two, a caretaker may help them take a shower. This can be costly and sometimes the residents are not even receiving the level of care that they are paying for. The meals are poor quality even for an institutionalized place.

Not recommended for memory care

I walked in on a Sunday afternoon and the staff had all the residents in the MEMORY CARE watching Game of Thrones. All them sitting on their behinds while watching a violent slaughter show!!! We were mortified. Also want to add that once they kicked my 83 year old father out of memory care for behavior issues (not sitting silently in a wheelchair) the nurse at that time (name removed) refused to speak or share notes with any other community making it almost impossible to place him. He lived in the ER at Presbyterian Novant for 30 days!!!! This place is disgraceful.

Under staffed facility

It's just a business to the owners. All this stuff about caring for your loved one is just a bunch of BS. Very under staffed facility that has problems with residents falling, hurting themselves and being stuck in wheelchair for long periods of time. Has room for improvement would be misleading- AVOID DOING BUSINESS HERE WOULD BE ACCURATE!

As a summary we had to leave this facility due to numerous problems and deficiencies and ultimately called the State Department of Health in regards to our experience. Cedar Hurst was ultimately fined over numerous violations. In addition to the above I have to mention that the policies of Cedarhurst were basically propaganda in their brochure and were not followed when we exited our agreement with them.

Extremely under staffed. Many residence have fallen and been severely injured.

Extremely short staffed and they just don't seem to care. Watched several residences fall and have major injuries due to no supervision. I would stay away from here for your loved ones . The management dies not care about your loved ones, they only care about the amount of money they can receive. Unfortunate but that is how it is at the cottages.

Be aware, it's a Horrible Place

That this place the Staff literally hides from you! They don't speak to anyone. They do not make any eye contact either. When you make an appointment with the staff about a complaint they try to avoid you at all costs! Making you wait & wait! Then tell you "Oh, it was your parent who didn't want in her room to clean or change the bedding! Do not fall for the Smooth talking ladies who get you in the door! Go talk to some of the Residents at breakfast or at any meal. That is where you can really find out about the staff. Especially when other non-resident people are there visiting their family or friend! Ask way more questions than you think is necessary! Get everything in Writing as well. It's better now because we have taken our Mom out of that place! Dirty, gross disgusting hard as rock food & they over charged her as well. Nope, they refused to give her the money back!. Please please do not let any place there parent in that place! They treat their residents HORRIBLY

I feel so bad for my loved one's experience at Charter Senior Living of Charlotte because the lady that did the intake was super nice and I thought was so knowledgeable. When I called her about all of my loved one's falls she had no idea of them. She told me she doesn't have anything to do with the clinical part of the place. How can one hand not know what's going on with the other?

Would never recommend

I would stay away from Charter. I know each facility has mixed reviews, and maybe some residents are happy there. I can only tell you that my dad did not receive adequate and proper care. I visited often, never found him anywhere but in his room. One night, my son and I came in and he was climbing into bed, very early evening, with a mess ( bowel). Thank God my son was with me because, no matter how many times we pulled the nurse cord, no one came. We went hunting for help, none on that floor to be found. An aide, who said she wasn't supposed to shower the patients, kindly helped my son clean my dad while I changed his messy bed. I immediately went to find a better place and found [facility name removed]. Night and day difference. I would NEVER recommend Charter.

Lack of competence

The experience my loved one and I had with this location was beyond comprehension. There were many i unacceptable issues at this facility. The worst was when my loved one fell ill, and in the early hours of the morning needed to be taken by ambulance to the hospital. Where she was immediately placed into ICU, with end of life stages beginning. Myself, as the emergency contact, and the ONLY contact in her file WAS NEVER NOTIFIED. Not one phone call was made to me to let me know that she was even in the hospital. Not only was her emergency contact not notified, her DNR was not sent with her to the hospital. The hospital called Charter to ask if there was a DNR on file, and they said NO! I have records with confirmation of receipt by the Director when the DNR was emailed. How does such oversight happen? What kind of incompetence allows this to happen? There is no excuse not to contact the emergency person on file. The Director never advised how this happened. Do not trust this location.

Not as advertised not close

Mom has been here 3 months and we have done more work than this place can do. High turn over. Care plan not followed Med disbursment chabby missed doses pills on floor. Soiled bedding no common sense when cleaning or caring for soiled laundry. Memory care not even in existance. Use the pendant they say...haha response time non existaning. Some staff seem bothered when asked for help. Untrained new hires. List is too long to keep going. Nothing but excuses. Goodluck for your elderly loved one. Mom going to a nicer place this week. Learning experience ar best.

Would NOT recommend this facility

If your loved one has any special needs like memory care, Charter is not the place. They will state that they accommodate all stages of the ageing process, do not believe that sales pitch. The care for my Mom was terrible, l did so much of the care giving. I could not miss going there for one day. My Mom's bathroom and bedroom would consistently be unclean (soiled with urine or feces). She declined so much on the two months she was there before we removed her. The staff is not experienced enough for care outside of very general duties.

The worst care facility by far

If you care about your loved one, do not put them here. They are severely understaffed leaving residents alone for hours at a time, especially after day shift leaves. Your loved one will not get the care you expect. The food is not a healthy diet. Residents are severely dehydrated. Management has either left for other jobs elsewhere or were fired. Take my advice - do not use this facility as a home for your loved one.

Worst place possible for loved ones!

Would not recommend to my worst enemy. Residents in memory care served cold food. Found my mother without pants on in common area around men & women! Found my mother in her room dirty on several occasions. Found scrapes ,scratches & bruises on her arms. Locked her in her room to keep others out, so they said. Moved her as soon as I could. Pls do not place ur loved one at this horrible location.
