For others, don't be in a hurry in their search. Visit more than once. Try to talk to residents and health care workers if possible. Also find the agency that oversees/regulates these facilities and try to discern any complaints filed.

Looks are deceiving

This is a nice looking building but feels hallow and empty hotel inside. There are very few residents for the size of the building, and it lacks that warm, inviting and community feeling. The corporate level is now running this building, so it lacks the home like qualities that are so necessary and personal touches that are important. Unfortunately they lack consistency with their employees , which trickles down to instability and unfamiliarity for the residents living there. Honestly I wouldn’t send my loved one here, for these reasons and the fact that it seems that the bottom dollar is the priority here, not the residents.

I toured this facility and based on the tour, I would not recommend it. The residents just seemed miserable. It was very small, no diversity, no activities. It wasn't vibrant or welcoming. It honestly felt more like a place you would put someone who had no family or advocate and nowhere else to go.

The facilities manager is insane and a total problem to deal with. We had everything set up and she became unhinged 2 days before we are supposed to move in. Nothing but lies and deceit and emotion instead of looking out for the members of their community. The memory care unit is very dark and dank and they keep everybody sitting in the same living area all day long and I do not believe they have many outings or activities besides throwing a ball around and watching TV

Our experience at Summit Senior Livng

I don't think they were prepared when Covid hit. They basically just let the old people wither away in their rooms. The new director is great, but I don't care for the nurses. Overall I'm frustrated with how everything went down. The room was very nice. This should have been a better experience than it was. I don't think they intentionally did anything to harm our loved one. But no one got any exercise, they were just left in their rooms. The staff didn't let me know when our loved one quit eating and couldn't walk anymore. Had the virus not hit, they're a very nice place. I was happy with some things, but communication was terrible with the nurse, especially when I really needed her.

Ok

It is very clean and beautiful inside. There is very little landscaping and no trees, it is Yuma, AZ, however, desert landscaping would be nice. It is along the freeway frontage road, very remote and ugly outside. There is no store for the residences to walk to and transportation is very limited. We went to visit my wife's father and found him in wet pants. He had not had his medication. It was difficult to find a caretaker for assistance. The staff is friendly overall, but there is very little assistance. There is unfortunately not enough staff to actually care for the patients, which is probably why the price is affordable and why several of the staff are somewhat angry. There are unfortunately a few angry overworked staff who should not be there. We have dealt with these people over the last few years. This place works if it is all you can afford. If you can add another 500 a month, go somewhere else.

Not A Great Experience Here

My mom previously lived here but I felt the need to have to remove her from here. The staff was really trying to push the fact that mom needed to be in memory care and that wasn't the case. I found this stuff, for the most part, to be not understanding and not empathic to its residents. There was some staff that was good such as the activities director she was great. The food while mom was here was horrible nothing was good at all. There is room for improvement in the memory care section better-trained staff. They need to know how to deal with those types of residents.

This was awful. They were outrageously priced. They reeked of urine, and had people lined in the halls, just sitting. They have called me since I toured, and said they have fixed these things, but I haven't gone back to check. The room didn't have a shower, they use community showers. The rooms didn't even have a closet for clothes, I understand why, but this wasn't very appealing.

This Did Not Work Out

To say it was a train wreck is putting it mildly. My mother had not done her homework and she didn't know what she was walking into. It ended up being and Alzheimer's/dementia care facility, strictly. She has a sound mind but needs some help getting around and this place was just not set up for her. They really treated her poorly. They were really difficult to deal with. I believe they have now changed management. At the very least they have been restructured. When my mother was there it was primarily Alzheimer’s and memory care patient there and mother was very lonely.

From the very first week of my mother living there, things went down hill quickly. The manager in the facility left with no one to replace him, since that time they have either had temporary replacements or one permanent person who walked out a few months ago. She still has not been replaced. My mother needs assistance with medication, they have not had a full time nurse for almost a year. The nurse [name removed] became ill and passed away, it was months before they replaced her and when they did, she walked off the job one day. Since that time they keep saying they are interviewing but have not found a full time nurse. There was a wonderful cook who also walked off the job one day, only to be replaced by someone who did not make quality or tasty meals. The food is barely edible with no variety. Without notice in August the bill for the month went up over $800.00 without an explanation or a family meeting. If not for the $3500.00 deposit that we were required to pay at the time of signing, we would remove my mother. The COVID pandemic has only made things worse with little or no communication from the facility to the residents or family. We had high hopes for this place but at this point, can only hope for improvement. The staff do care for the residents, it seems as though the lack of management and the revolving door of staff have affected their morale which in turn affects the residents. Please make necessary changes. Hire people that will stay. The last manager that was there stayed in her office all day and did not seem personable or welcoming. It was a relief to see her go.

Don't recommend

This is a kind of place that I will not recommend to anybody for their parents. I understand the rules for COVID and restriction, but kindness and care has to be expected. Caregiver is not only a job, it is a caring attitude and compassion, that it is not find on this place. Keeping people in a prison like environment and expected to be paid is wrong. My mom a 93 year old woman with intact mind and feeling, cried as she stated that did not expect after a life of work to be improvement and paid for room and board. Better to be in a real prison. As about care, medication given constantly late and even the caregivers had to be called and reminded that the time for meds is long passed, Hygiene poor, and the laundry constantly lost. In 3 years, we had to buy so many times, towels, clothes, bed sets - . No activities, no social interaction among the residents, very poor atmosphere, even when the were no restriction, there is no difference. Anyway enough said - Finally we took mom away from this place

Disappointed in care - Family/Friend
Assisted Living
December 11, 2019
Lack of proper facility management/care

Heron Place is a really nice looking facility. We were pleased at first then after several months the level of care and food went downhill. Snacks were no longer offered to the residents. Vegetables were undercooked and hard to eat for those with dentures. The last straw was when the med tech made a serious mistake in the medication that was given which could have been fatal. We were lucky it was discovered in time and our loved one was hospitalized. There was no RN onsite daily at the time the medication error occurred. This all reflects on the facility administrator and corporate management.
