Great facility, but very understaffed, leading to problems.

Lovely facility, very friendly staff, who made a last minute room available for us on a couple days notice, which we GREATLY appreciated. Downside is The Peridot is severely understaffed!! Even the manager and front desk and financial personnel are serving meals!! It takes a long time to get served, and food is usually cold when it comes. Also, people do listen to your requests and concerns, but don't follow through, which appears to be because they are trying to do too much with too few staff. Also we have had trouble getting a phone set up so the resident can make a long distance call from the room. I finally called the phone company on my relative's ( the resident) behalf, and they said there should be no problem getting her home phone transferred to her new room, but the Peridot has not gotten back to me to explain why that wasn't done in the first place. There are also problems with food items: ie. My aunt is diabetic and there is no sugar substitute at all in the cafeteria. I understand one resident was served a grilled cheese sandwich with no cheese, as they were out of cheese... There are no sugar free juices and often no milk at breakfast. I understand the facility is in the process of switching from an Emeritus group property to a different group. That may be part of the problem, It is too bad, as it has potential to be a great place to live, but is having problems right now.

(Activities Not Rated) The sales representative sold me on Emeritus and made me feel like this would be the last move our loved one would have to make. She told me how friendly the staff was and how professional they are but seems like it was all just marketing there has not been any follow through. It seems like they take the easy way out of a situation and just send them to the hospital rather then deal with the issue and with someone who needs memory care that could be very confusing. When we talked to the nurse she stated "You're not talking about anything we haven't seen." yet there only actions when a situation arises is to send them away. She told us that once the private funding runs out we would be able to get PACE funding but turns out that is not as easy as she made it seem. Would not be able to recommend them at this time.

need to listen to prospective residents

When my sister and I first took my dad to Garnet, one of the things we told them is dad required social interaction. he likes to talk. He needs folks to talk to. They told us no problem, in that department. A couple days before my dad moved there I walked through the lobby and saw several residents sitting there. They seemed to be parked there. No interaction. I felt alarm bells going off in my head. If these were the folks my dad had to talk to, we had a problem. I called Garnet with my concern, and once again was told it was no problem. There were folks for my dad. Once we moved him in, it became pretty clear almost immediately that my dad was feeling depressed because he had no one to gab with. He said people t the dinner tables did not talk. Many could not hear. Some refused to answer his, hi, how are you? questions. A month after moving in, I moved him out to an independent living environment where folks are chatting and socializing all over the place. It was a very expensive miss-step for us. I wish Garnet had really listened when we first went there. They did not.

Some things are great, some things are not

My loved one is here currently and things aren’t going great. The staff, from what I understand, has been alright and they seem to love my loved one. Everyone I’ve talked to seems really nice as well. There have been issues with medication and [Removed], though. My loved one likes the people and seems to like the facility. Everything is kept pretty clean and from what I understand housekeeping comes by once a week. The food seems to be pretty decent and they have a lot of options to choose from. They have a few activities like games, bingo, they do exercises, and they also go out to the movies and things like that. I think they have outside activities, too. Some things are okay and some things are getting better, but I really have to stay on top of it to make anything happen. The nurses that are there have been great and I love them but the extra price we pay for anything medical is a lot and I think we’re over paying. The medical staff has been my real issue as most of them are not registered nurses or aids. I asked for help with something and the staff that was available at the time never made the attempt to help, but rather continued their conversation. Overall, I don’t know if I would recommend them.

I had recently taken a tour of this community for my loved one and I was not very impressed with the overall facility. The staff where kind and made sure to provide all of the information we had needed for that day. It was just very draining atmosphere and not somewhere I would want to come visit every day. With all that being said I would not put my loved one somewhere to live that I would not even want to visit.

The good and the bad

I have a parent at Olympus Ranch. The good comments from several reviewers are mostly true: the people are nice, and there is a lot to do. However, the corporate people are extremely greedy: over the last few years, they have asked for more than 5%/year increases. Even this year, when inflation has actually been NEGATIVE, they want 6%! Also, there is just one tiny, painfully slow elevator to handle four floors of people with walkers and electric wheelchairs - in an emergency, it would be useless. Also, each meal takes 1 1/2 to 2 hours because everyone is served (really not served) at once. Would I put my parent there if we had to do it again? Maybe - but I certainly look closely at other places before making that decision.

Not good

What they offer and what they say they offer are different things. It’s not kept clean. I don’t think they have much of a selection on the food. They are drastically understaffed. There is plenty of parking. They need to do a lot to bring the standards up. We use the memory care services. They don’t have any activities in the memory care unit. They don’t perform building maintenance very quickly.

Family's experience

Olympus Ranch is not worth 3.070.00 per month Not community oriented. Food is a big bad ugly word, it's barely edible a shame to feed our senior family members. The staff seem very kind but management has had a huge turnover they have been without a chef for a month new one this week. We have appealed twice through Angels to this place approved so far only met with denials so I am out 3070.00 from my retirement. Not happy with this at all. I want to stress they have serious turn over issues and overburdened staff because of it .

Not a good experience for our family.

They only lived there for a month. Dad passed away within a month. Mom really doesn't have a good opinion. She wanted to leave right away. We didn't feel like they received the care and attention that they paid for. But again they weren't there that long. They paid for extra care for dad. He was unstable and were going to help him out of bed in the mornings and that never happened. Mom is in a wheelchair and most days dad couldn't get up for breakfast and she couldn't get anyone to help her bring his breakfast back to the room. It was all she could do is get her wheelchair up the uneven halls and wasn't able to carry anything. we would definitely go to a different facility if we had to do it over again.

Not recommended for seniors with mobility challenges

If the senior is mobile and can get around in their own I would recommend the facility. If the senior is not mobile then I would NOT recommend the facility for they are not staffed or qualified to help someone with high needs.

Our Experience

I would not recommend this facility. The staff, though friendly, didn't take care of both of my parents as they should have been. They billed my parents for services that were never received. When we brought it to their attention, they ended up reimbursing my parents over $10,000.00. I also have an issue with how they handled my dad. They stopped giving him his Coumadin in pill form when he got pneumonia. He subsequently had a massive stroke, which killed him. This happened so quickly that I didn't have time to ask questions. At my father's funeral, one of the P.A.'s said to me that "pneumonia is an old person's friend." I was appalled and therefore quite suspicious. I'm usually not one to make a fuss, but this is something that should never happen again.

Not for your love one

If I were you I would not put my loved one in Avista Yakima the Ed only sees dollar signs when someone Moves In my mom used to live here and the employees did not check on her like I was paying for them to do or get her showers like I was paying for them to do if you care about your parent or grandparent this is not the place for them

Our Experience

The furniture smells like urine. My mom doesn't get her meds at the right time and was not being showered. The food is always served cold. They just seem to turn on a tv and that's the effort for entertainment for the residents, while most the staff is on their phones. They are what my mom can afford, but yet she is not even given the services listed for this price. My mom has majorly declined since being there. I wish there were other options.
