Before making any decision about where to put your loved one, read BEING MORTAL by Atul Gawande, which is about end of life decisions. Chapters 3,4, and 5 specifically discuss senior living facilities. The Atria is mentioned in chapter 4. Also, watch the documentary, LIFE AND DEATH IN ASSISTED LIVING, pbs.org/video/frontline-… Atria Briarcliff Manor is expertly marketed, as are many of these kinds of facilities. The look of the facility is very appealing to the family of prospective residents. However, I believe The Atria in Briarcliff Manor has the lowest level of licensing permitted in New York State. Many staff members are kind, but have no special training and that often shows up in the unknowing care that is provided. The current director, [name removed], seems ill-suited to her position. Rent increases can be a shock. [Date removed] Update My mother was evicted from her assisted living residence at, The Atria in Briarcliff Manor, New York in [date removed]. That facility called the police when my 97 year old mother, who had dementia, would not leave the new director's office until she got the response she wanted. The Alzheimer's Association advises that one does not argue with an individual who has dementia. But, that's what Atria's new director did, even though that facility houses dementia patients. My mother was first taken to a psychiatric ward and drugged. Subsequently, she was discharged/transferred to a top-notch geriatric psychiatric hospital some distance away. The geriatric psychiatric hospital treated my mother's condition successfully, but Mom was transferred to an assisted living residence near the hospital because the Briarcliff Manor Atria refused her readmittance despite the fact that their own nurse certified that my mother was greatly improved, and the geriatric psychiatric hospital recommended Mom's return to The Atria. Mom remained at the distant temporary assisted living facility, until we could research and find a local facility. Although her new residance care was about as good as one can get, my mother's health declined precipitously and she died in hospice on [date removed]. At 97, my mother was subjected to moves to four different facilities. Point 4 of a letter from New York elected officials and sent to [name removed](New York State Department of Health) on [date removed] regarding their concerns about the Manhattan 86th Street Atria, speaks to the perils of moving elderly people. "For many frail elderly, moving is either impossible or presents significant health risks often referred to as 'transfer trauma'..."

My parents have lived at this location for over 5 years now, and they have never complained about the food, or the food service, until recently. They are considerate, patient, kind and appreciative people, who are satisfied with very little, so when they are constantly complaining about the food choices, quality of the food, and the table service, I feel compelled to do something about it - currently they say that on average only 2 out of 7 meals are OK in a week, and it has been like this for many months - more than I care to recall. They receive a weekly menu, and when they get to the dining room, the menu has changed, and their choices are limited. The only thing that they say is always good is the soup, and the salads are OK, however the protein is over or under-cooked and either tasteless or too spicy, and the vegetable choices are minimal. They tell me they, and others, send back their food on a regular basis, citing it as inedible. What an incredible waste on so many fronts - a waste of the money we pay to accommodate and feed them; a waste of food; a waste of the time I need to spend complaining about this. Further issues relate to the table service - they go down for their meal at 5:30, place their order, and they don't receive it an hour later, and in some cases due to kitchen and table service they only get to leave the dining room at 7:30 - 7:45, which means that they miss out on the entertainment, which starts at 7:00 pm, or their favorite TV shows. I am not sure if you are aware that elderly people look forward to their meals, and spending a couple of hours in the company of their friends, because they have already lost so much at their age - their quality of life and independence, possibly their spouses, and their health. One of the key elements to keeping them healthy is ensure they have good nutrition, and the comfort of companionship at a daily meal - I don't think it is too much to ask that they receive food choices that resonate with them, a selection of real vegetables (not potato as a vegetable), and a dining experience they enjoy, for the large sum of money that we pay. Everything else about the facility is lovely - it is in a great location, the remodel done in the last year or so has greatly improved the aesthetics of the environment, however the food is nowhere near acceptable - when asked if they would give up the visual remodel to have back the good food and service they used to have, the answer is a resounding yes! The do not eat breakfast in the dining facility, and very occasionally will get a sandwich to take up to their unit, so at least they deserve one tasty well prepared meal a day, and we deserve value for our money. There have been countless meetings with the residents and yourselves about this issue and nothing seems to have changed, so I would like to know what the plan is to resolve this for once and all - and I would like the courtesy of a response. I have submitted two inquiries about this via your websites in the past, and have received no response! And I would like to know why the General Manager of this location is not doing anything about what is going on?

Feels older. Art & chairs, etc. are outdated. Elevator was in bad repair (walls). Chairs in dining room showing signs of wear. Yet, they still want as much or more than other places. Only thing they have that others don't is a small indoor pool. Cost for 2nd person @ $800/month is the highest we have seen.

Everything here is eye candy to entice you to live there. Once you pay the $5000 non refundable deposit you will find out that the care giving, food, private room housekeeping and room maintenance are mediocre at best. Billing done a fine job collecting your money however. Shop around carefully before committing to this one.

I toured this facility while looking for a place for my Mother and I was not impressed! I really didn’t like the lady who gave me the tour and I felt like she was just doing a sales pitch. It’s like she was selling a car or a product and was very impersonal. The building itself was outdated and smelled bad. I didn’t like the rooms and it was the same price as other places for something smaller. They didn’t have a lot of food options and there is a lot of traffic nearby. I would not recommend this facility to other families.

We just moved Dad out of here. The place has clearly gone down hill. It is dirty, needing paint (check out dirty stair well carpets and hand rails). The place is at best, equivalent to a 2-star hotel - old, grungy, dingy and dirty. Our maintenance requests were always met with smiles, but rarely met with action. In fact, they got ignored for weeks, even when put into writing multiple times. Hallways are not color-coded, and the compound is poorly planned. It spans multiple buildings and many residents are confused. To make things worse, room numbers are not sequential - leaving fully-functioning visitors at a loss for how to easily find residents. Dementia patients are frequently roaming the halls, not knowing where to go from day to day. Food has also gone downhill. While it seemed wonderful when Dad moved in a year ago, it now often consists of carbs and more carbs. I stayed for dinner a month ago and got some type of sausage with rice. It was disgusting. Dad was also allowed to drink alcohol at all meals, even at breakfast. He reportedly ordered spaghetti three times a day on some days. While we've repeatedly asked to have his intake monitored for nutrition, we were told that they do not give those types of services. Meanwhile, Dad has gained more than 50 pounds since moving in, and now can barely walk, put his socks on and presents a serious fall risk to us all. Dad was increasingly failing and despite multiple requests to have him receive a higher level of care (including written requests), the requests are ignored. Management is also changing, with the director leaving for unstated reasons. She was kind and as responsive as possible, but at the end, quite stressed. Staff are wonderful and very kind, but clearly overwhelmed. Activities are varied, but for fully functioning people and not so much the dementia community. We since have moved Dad to another facility across town, where he is being given the care he needs and deserves. Moving Dad has created serious repercussions though, given his dementia. If we had known that this setting is not appropriate for dementia patients, we would never have gotten him set up here. Rather, we were repeatedly assured that they have many dementia residents and they they could care for him till the end. We were assured that hat he would never have to move. As it turns out, we have learned that Dad can get out at night and not be able to get back in. The neighborhood is a bit sketchy and so, this recent news alarmed us. Dad reported that he did wander out one night and wasn't sure how he got back in. He may have been We were seriously mis-led and could not be more disappointed. Be sure to speak with the [removed] - "fondly" referred to by the residents as "nurse rachett". She is a hard-lined, money focused woman who only seems to consider her bottom line. This site clearly is focused on making $$$ and not much more.

Nice place BUT.........I don't agree with the PHENOMENAL increases the residents get EVERY YEAR. The residents are Seniors with a fixed income. The more money the seniors receive per month the higher their increase per year is. NOT FAIR. Also, the residents are ASKED to give $1.00 per day ($365) at the end of the year for TIPS that are given to the staff (wait staff, chef, cleaners, laundry personnel). The are NOT ALLOWED to tip these staff members for the wonderful jobs they do. There are seniors living there that require a special menu. The menu selection is not in their favor. The place was just "REMODLED" (in my opinion) at the residents expense. There is no way to express my dissatisfaction with corporate. They redirect you to the staff at the Atria Tanglewood.

We did not like this community at all. We didn't find it to be as clean as any of the others we had toured. When we walked in the front door the first thing we were greeted with was the smell of urine. As we walked around the community we didn't see very many staff the only person we interacted with was the person who gave us the tour and maybe one other staff member.

My loved one was there only for a limited amount of time. They had exhibited aggression and how the staff handled it was the complete opposite as to how they said they would handle a situation such as what happened. They are not forth coming with their policies and procedures. Since we were only there a short amount of time I really have nothing else to base my opinion on other than I feel like we were misled after asking about this type of situation.

Atria Rocklin is not what they appeared to be. They assured us that they had many activities available. My mother is a very active memory care patient and I don't think throwing around a balloon once a day is adequate. She has become very frustrated and unhappy here. I'm sure its a good place for a non-active senior but not for my mother. They didn't give her a shower for three weeks because they said she was combative, she weighs 105 lbs.She had sores on her head from not being bathed. I pay a lot of money for care, my daughter shouldn't have to go in there to give her grandmother a shower. They have employees working there that make $10 an hour with no schooling or credentials. I am very disappointed.
