A Trial is Important

My visit to Atria was very enlightening. I decided to try it for30 days. I went in with my husband on January 19th. By Feb 7 ,I was ready to leave. Our experience was not what I expected. Too many services were not performed according to my original orientation. Starting with the room which was too small for two people. My husband was evaluated level 2 . He was suppose to get help mornings and evenings. Lucky I was there to guide them. There was no real schedule. The dining room was always a long wait. The menu was not complete. You could get almost anything if you knew what you wanted. Room was never vacuumed. The activity staff was excellent. It is difficult to service two individuals on different levels. There was a lock down because of illness. We should have been sent home until it was over. There were many things that should have been coordinated. One chief didn't know what the others were doing. We should have had a meeting with a social worker after a short time. Getting home was the best we could do.

Friendly and helpful until you leave your loved one there on their own. Communication with family on care isn't very often. I do not think they have enough help to go around. If your loved one cannot be independent this is not the place for them if they need any kind of EXTRA care. Disappointed with what was presented to me prior to move in.

For the price: not impressed by facility. On busy street, no grounds(green area). Some units open directly into parking lot - not safe. Smelly in many areas. But very friendly staff (maybe too friendly to the point of unprofessional-was approached by friendly shuttle driver who had brought in a gift of pastry during the tour. He was trying to "sell" me the community again in the parking lot as I'm leaving).

It was terrible,

They just left him in his room all day. It was terrible, he would just sit there and stare out the window. He went to the hospital several times, and the last time he fell he laid there all day, it wasn't even night and nobody checked on him. I felt like they just wanted the money. My mom was always worried about getting a phone call, about dad ending up in the hospital, she didn't like to leave him there.

It's a pretty good place, but it didn't work out

It's a pretty good place, but it didn't work out for my loved one. It's clean, but the furnishings could use some updating. The staff is pretty friendly, and it is less than a lot of places. This is for those that are more independent, they didn't offer the level of care we needed. Unfortunately they used an outsourced company to assess my loved one, and this was just not a good fit. These are all outdoor apartments, so the heat can be daunting in the summer months if you aren't used to it.

We were provided with nothing in writing (they could not even say what the square footage of the rooms was) but we were quoted $6000/mo for a two bedroom apartment (no kitchen), which did not include any care services. Too expensive. Also staff displayed disorganization. We liked the dog (Coco) The ED gave us some valuable information about a recommended home care agency. Not exactly what we are looking for.

Very poor communication

Our main concern is that my loved one is 79 and he was using his long term health insurance. Atria has failed to help him understand the paperwork for his insurance. They are not being good advocates. They don’t get back to us about his condition. We toured a lot of better properties. Atria is one of the top properties. I’m so surprised by how our loved one has been treated.

High level of care? Be careful before moving your parent here

If your loved one has a high level of care, be very careful if you're looking at Atria Covell Gardens. They misrepresented themselves and we were forced to move her when they served an eviction notice (which was handled very unprofessionally) after only a few weeks. An assessment was done before we moved and we were assured several times there would be no problem with her care level. It was especially sad since our mother appeared to like the care givers and seemed happy in her new location. Note it is hard to give accurate ratings since we were there less than two months

Conflicted

I just moved my out of this community. I got talked to by three people including the LVN and the business manager who thought this would work for my mom, that it was just a period of adjustment, but the manager, Laura, said that mom should move to a board and care, which due to timing has been very inconvenient.

Not what I was hoping...

The care services are expensive!! We had a recent flu outbreak and we were all confined to our rooms! Also the rooms are very small. I feel like I can't maneuver around! There are smokers and their smoke gets into your room, which is nauseating. Also, the street on the southern side is very very noisy! Didn't end up being what I was hoping for. There are too many things I don't like.

Be careful about the Atria Woodlands!

My father has lived at the Atria Woodlands for 6 years. In the beginning it was o.k. It has become a place where no one seems to care and the director seems to care even less. The facility has been under lock down in the last week due to some bug, with nothing being done about it other than serving bad meals to the residents three times a day in their rooms. This is a horrible situation without a solution. Be very careful about this place. I have no choice at this point. My father is there and I can't move him. There is no communication with family and the price keeps on going up every year for no good reason. This is a captive audience and they take full advantage of it. What a shame!

Disappointed with Atria Riverdale - Family/Friend
Memory Care

Atria Riverdale getting Worse and WORSE

We were very hopeful when mom moved into Atria. She's been there more than two years and remains because she has made so many friends among the residents and staff. She loves her care-providers but NOT the facility. The care-providers in general are deeply caring and committed to keeping her happy and comfortable. Her aids have been consistently outstanding and extremely capable and caring. Clearly they are under-appreciated and treated with disrespect by management. We know of at least two instances where care-providers were physically ATTACKED by their violent patients. They were discharged while the patients were simply scolded and their aggressive behavior continued. While the care-providers do the "REAL" (and often unpleasant) work, management regularly implements new policy changes that make their work more difficult. Now, suddenly, care providers are no longer allowed to give out their charge's medication. Rather, the resident must go down to the nurse's office to be medicated. OUR MOTHER WAS MIS-MEDICATED, given the WRONG MEDICATIONS at the nurse's office. Luckily her aid spoke up, putting herself at odds with management. Did they thank her or even acknowledge her action? Did they interact with us? No. They simply tried to sweep it under the rug. The food is also pathetically bad. Frequently they run out of staples like orange juice, coffee, or eggs for breakfast and mom has to order in. Often they run out of entrees at dinner as well or don't have something listed on the daily menu. Luckily mom keeps her refrigerator stocked, but at Atria's prices she shouldn't have to. There is also no allowance made for people who are NOT kosher or jewish. They are forced to keep kosher and during the high holy days mom's non-jewish friends have often gone hungry or been forced to eat out. There are THREE kitchens in the facility. Something could be done to provide for non-kosher residents, even if it were as simple as pizza ordered in and served in one of the other dining areas. Management is unresponsive and disorganized. We have trouble contacting the right person when we need to, and they often don't know what's going on, who's responsible, and clearly think of their residents as commodities rather than persons. Changeover is very frequent ("chronic" is the word) and we are rarely informed of policy changes or certain important decisions we should be CONSULTED on since they immediately effect our mom. We are realizing we need to be much more proactive in order to keep our mom's quality of life acceptable. Housekeeping is adequate and erratic - they often don't show or don't complete their tasks - and mom had underclothing supplies STOLEN from her apartment. Activities are also chaotic. The daily activities calendar is often wrong or out of date, and events scheduled don't actually happen or are poorly run. Now, suddenly, aids are no longer permitted to stay with their patients during activities. Road trips have been cancelled many times because they were mis-scheduled for days when residents couldn't actually go - sometimes due to religious observances. I mean, COME ON! Transportation, although provided for free within a five-mile radius has often been unreliable or late, and the previous driver surly. There is also no venue in which residents and their families may discuss the problems at this Atria amongst themselves and effect positive change. The community is kept scattered and out of contact with each other. We know from our own informal conversations with others that there is a lot of dissatisfaction. We chose this Atria because of its location, the need to find someplace quickly, and because of a positive first impression it has failed to live up to. We were even sent home with a delicious apple pie we were told was "baked on the premises." It was NOT, and we haven't seen it in the resident's dining room since. All in all, a very disappointing experience. We would move mom out tomorrow but we fear it would be too unsettling for her now that she's made so many friends. But we may be forced to anyway as our frustration level continues to grow.

The Atria was not very good, the services were bad actually.

The atria was not very good, the services were bad actually. My parents would ask for things that were really basic and were not met. The food was awful! I witnessed it personally, and I am not picky, and it was awful. They had some nice activities, the woman who runs them is really caring, and she really tries. The staff was clearly not being treated well, they were grumpy, and not being paid very well, it's not a good situation. It's beautiful and looks great but has been a traumatic experience for my parents.

New to memory care

This review is strictly on the memory care unit. They just started providing memory care in December. They seem to be learning as they go and are really trying to improve. However they do not seem like they were ready to provide this type of care and seem to lack in several areas. They were able to market the memory care unit very well but are not able to execute as well as they market. The care givers seem to not have the proper training in dealing with Alzheimer. During holiday weekends there seemed to be no body around that had management authority. The community just seems to not be ready for memory care. They are making an effort to get better and provide what they were offering. If your loved one is physically capable of doing everything and is other wise healthy then this community seems like it would be a good fit. If your loved one needs medical assistances and memory care that might be too much for them for the time being.
