Nice place but must be involves with your loved one

The activities for the residents are the highlight of Atria. There isn't a facility that comes close to the mental stimulation that Atria has for the residents. The food is very good, one thing that the residents rave about. The Resident Relations Director has made a concerted effort to email the families a monthly list of activities and special events. The special events can be great fun. The down side is the housekeeping staff does not clean the rooms well. The amount of dust in the rooms is awful. Also the nursing staff can be rude and difficult to work with. The response time to an emergence can be 3 min at night which is not good.

She seems pretty happy. There have been a few complaints with the restaurant staff, and food. These are sit down tables where the waitstaff serves you, and they don't have enough waitstaff, so it can take a long time to get your lunch. They seem to have a lot of turnover with the waitstaff. They told us that if she didn't like certain things, then they would have the chef put something on the menu that she will like. That is not the case, they have a few other things like a sandwich or something but they don't add stuff to the menu. My mom is keeping busy she does dance classes, and exercise classes, and is in the library a lot too. It's a fairly nice and roomy room, we did like the room a lot. It's a little overpriced, in my opinion, but they are pretty competitive compared to the other places we saw. They were a few hundred dollars less. Everyone is friendly, and I don't have any concerns over cleanliness, however a few things have gone missing since the last time the housekeeper came, but we haven't been able to check into that yet.

a change since taing up residence here

I love my apartment and have met and enjoyed many independent residents. However, there is much that should be done to improve the food and the dining service. The pool was out of service for most of the seven months I have been here. The housekeeping service is not thorough nor especially willing to render the service advertised. The rental costs are more than they should be for the value received and we have been notified that the rents are to increase by 5% the first of the year. As this is far more than the cost of living increase and the price is one of the highest of all Independent senior residents already , this could very well demand a move by many of us. There is a lack of central communication. Many of us check on each other when we are aware that one has been ill, or in the hospital or needs just a small favor. This should be provided by the administration, but is not. The staff is friendly and the surroundings most pleasant.

A good fit

We cared for my dad and step mom for 2 years, so I know the level of care required for them is extreme. Atria Del Rey has done admirably well in meeting the challenge. Both of my parents have moderate to severe dementia, that is the reason for having to place them in a memory care unit. It has been over a year since I was able to be with them there because I am from Northern California, so I can only say the staff on duty at that time were amazing, very dedicated and professional. My only complaints are management turnover, and the initial learning curve for understanding the needs of my folks. We tried to help make that transition easier for the staff but in the end they apparently needed to learn in their own way and timing. Finally, I must say that if you're thinking of placing loved ones in any facility, the best way to get good care is to participate in the process. Be involved, visit as often as you can and be an advocate for your loved one, and a cheerleader for the staff. Most caregivers really want to do a good job and they need all they encouragement they can get.

Be involved or beware

Atria Hacienda is a lovely community. The staff is friendly and most try very hard. The managers are very busy, but very friendly. There are issues here. They are issues that occur in most assisted living. 1) Do not assume that your family member is being taken care of if you drop them off and live your life. You must be involved on a daily basis to ensure safety and good choices. 2) the med techs make mistakes all the time. The managers are very defensive about it. They cannot respond to your concerns at times because they face legal issues. 3) If your loved one is not a "joiner" they can be isolated in their room watching TV. There are times when there are many "posted" activities that really just are promotion for the corporation. There are far fewer activities then one would be lead to believe. 4) as a person ages there are often gray areas when assisted living is not enough, but they do not need nursing care. You must orchestrate this yourself. The Atria can only do so much. 5) there are often gross blunders by an organization that should know how to do things. Example, calling someone who is alone who is known for having memory issues and then telling them that they have an appt. , or the many errors that occur when things are still done on paper that should be done electronically, like having the front desk text the med techs, or the kitchen staff with some important information. 6) The food is good, but how many people over 85 should be eating tacos, pizza, fried chicken, mac and cheese. etc. etc. There is no way to manage your loved one's diet at this Atria. If you do not actually go in and remove the pickle from the plate , or stop someone from eating the dessert because of the sugar, then there is no one there that can do it. Overall Assisted living can be a wonderful life. BUT you must manage your family, and the staff yourself, or you will have no idea what really goes on behind the scenes. This is the case every where. Don't drop your parent off her and expect them to be managed properly all the time. It is not the definition of what Atria can provide.

I like this "mutual admiration society" kind of feel in the place. I picked the Atria, Forest Hills because it seems a home that I wouldn't mind living in. I think they are activity-driven as well. I even met one of the doctors there and she was as conscientious as you get! I think I made a good decision choosing the Atria.

This place did not work out for our loved one, since she ended up needing more care than they could offer. However, the chef was the person who guided us on our visit took us around. His food was absolutely phenomenal!! The price was pretty close to the place we ended up choosing, too.

It's not a bad place, most of the people there are wonderful people.

I think their menu could be improved, I think they put way to much sodium in their food. Their bases for gravies and things, not only contain a lot of sodium but MSG too, which really surprised me. I think the cleanliness and organization in the dining room needs to be improved. The activities that are posted get changed or cancelled often with out enough notice for the participants that show up. Often times they have had events planned, karaoke, or something, and machinery breaks, or a D.J. doesn't show up. I don't know if it's all Atria Larson Place or if it's the follow through, things just don't run smoothly and efficiently. The laundry room looks like they haven't been cleaned in years, things that are broken don't get fixed in a timely manor. They did promote a number of things when they were letting us know what the community had to offer that weren't entirely acurate. It's not a bad place, most of the people there are wonderful people. The concern and response of the people are good. Ron and Jill have been very good, and helpful.

Atria Marland - Andover

Mom is happy here, that's all that matters. Personally, I think the common area bathrooms along with residents bathrooms could be cleaned more often than they are. The food is good and the staff is friendly and caring.

The reluctant resident

My mother refused to consider assisted living until she fell on ice near her mailbox. After a few days in the hospital and a week in a nursing home, we moved her to atria draper Place. Her one bedroom apartment is lovely with morning light and a view of the neighborhood. Everyone is very friendly, with many remembering my mothers first name. The residents in particular seem to want to make her feel welcome. We just visited her doctor for the first time since her move and she told her doctor the place is nice, the people are friendly, and the food is so-so. Coming from my mother that is high praise indeed.

Mama moved in 6 weeks ago.

My mother moved in about 6 weeks ago. I am generally satisfied with care and cleanliness levels. Staff is competent and concerned, though you can sense that given the demands of their responsibilities they are under some degree of strain. I feel the dining room staff could be somewhat warmer. Activities are more plentiful and interesting than at Mama's former assisted living in southern Florida. Mama's depression limits her enjoyment of the many positive aspects here, but that is not the facility's fault.

We toured this community when we were looking into options for our loved one. We were very impressed with what we saw here, the residents looked happy and like they were having fun. The staff were all friendly and helpful, and the food was very nice. However, this community was a bit too large to be an option for my loved one. It was an outdoor community, so there would be a lot of walking between buildings.

I would not use it long term.

We used the dementia unit and I felt like they didn't take the residents out of the area as much as they could. The food was fair a pretty healthy 4. They did a pretty good job keeping the meals healthy for the residents diets. I would not use it long term. If I needed to use a respite care again, I would keep looking. We chose them because at the time they were the only place with an opening.

The apartment is just right for my mom. I like the cleanliness, service, staff and dining. I am very impressed and would recommend to others. I was pleased to see my mom involved in the exercise class. My moms security and well being is very important to me. This facility meets all of her needs. Thanks!

entrance fee or monthly rental?

I am considering this for my parent? I need to know if it has an entrance fee (one-time lump sum, whether "refundable" in the future or not), or just monthly rental. Thanks

It would have been OK. I really believe that when I saw the people there, they were more stuck up. They just weren't friendly to me when I first when in. I didn't see much, I was just on a tour. I do know someone there that is a real nice person, so I'm sure there are nice people there. It was also $500 a month more than what I'm paying now, and they had a large wait list.

Seemed very nice, but too much of a community focus for Dad to like. Kerri Mathews was absolutely wonderful! Care options were good at beginning, but perhaps not enough at the end.
